Ledger's death puts last films in a bind

Heath Ledger was subject of "Dark Knight" marketing campaign
Ledger was filming new Terry Gilliam film when he died
Gilliam said Ledger was going to be a fine director

(CNN) -- Before he died, Heath Ledger had two films in production: "The Dark Knight," the latest chapter in the Batman saga, and "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," the latest film from director Terry Gilliam.

Ledger's death has affected both of them in different ways.

The actor, who died Tuesday of unknown causes at age 28, had finished filming "The Dark Knight" late last year. It's due to be released in July. But marketing of the film, currently in post-production, has been thrown into turmoil, the trade paper Variety notes.

The early push for the film has focused on Ledger's villainous Joker character, including a poster with a shrouded Joker scrawling "Why So Serious?" in blood on misty glass.

The film's studio, Warner Bros., recently restructured its marketing department, Variety reports, after the departure of the executive who helped create the "Dark Knight" campaign. (Warner Bros., like CNN, is a unit of Time Warner.)

The trade paper speculates that the marketing campaign will be changed abruptly.

The studio put out a statement Tuesday saying it was "stunned and devastated" by the news of Ledger's death. "The entertainment community has lost an enormous talent. Heath was a brilliant actor and an exceptional person. Our hearts go out to his family and friends," the statement said.

With the Joker, Ledger was taking on a role that Jack Nicholson had rendered indelibly in 1989's "Batman." But "Dark Knight" director Christopher Nolan said the actor had more than measured up to Nicholson. "To be perfectly honest ... what he's doing is indescribable. He's figured it out," Nolan told the crowd at an August comic book convention in Chicago.

The role as arch villain The Joker disturbed Ledger, according to The Associated Press. He called the character a "psychopathic, mass-murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy."

Although unusual, Ledger's death does not mark the first time a major star has died while a film has been in production.

Perhaps the most famous example is James Dean, who died in September 1955, before post-production on "Giant" had finished. Dean's dialogue in the film's final scene had to be re-recorded, Variety observes, because he had mumbled in the shot. (Dean and director George Stevens famously clashed during filming.)

Dean was nominated for an Oscar for his performance, his second posthumous Oscar nomination after "East of Eden."

Brandon Lee died during filming of 1994's "The Crow," prompting director Alex Proyas to use a stunt double and special effects. Oliver Reed had a heart attack during the making of 2000's "Gladiator"; technology made it possible for director Ridley Scott to use a double as a stand-in with Reed's face computer-generated in.

Gilliam's film, which concerns prime Gilliam material such as a magic mirror, a traveling show, the devil and a rougish character played by Ledger, is more problematic.

The cast had just completed filming in London, which actor Christopher Plummer characterized as "cold as bejesus" to Entertainment Weekly. "You know how damp it gets in London. And at night the temperature drops horribly, and that little breeze gets up. You have to wear tons of stuff," he said.

Plummer said that Ledger had a "terrible, lingering bug in London, and he couldn't sleep at all. We all -- I thought he'd probably got walking pneumonia," he told EW.

Gilliam has had challenges before. During the making of his film "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote," the Monty Python troupe member coped with filming near a NATO shooting range, a flash flood and a star with a herniated disc, a final indignity that prompted financiers to pull the plug.

But nothing approaches Ledger's death. Indeed, part of the reason Gilliam was able to obtain the film's relatively paltry $30 million financing was because of Ledger's agreement to star, according to Variety.

Ledger and Gilliam had become close during the making of Gilliam's "The Brothers Grimm" and Ledger had plans to become a feature director himself, several sources have reported. The actor had directed a handful of music videos, including one for Ben Harper, with whom he formed a record company.

Last month, Gilliam told Variety, "He's going to be a much better director than I will ever be."

Plummer told EW that "Parnassus" had "an enormous amount left to do." After a short break, the cast was going to re-convene in Vancouver, British Columbia, primarily for technical and special-effects work.

"God knows what's going to happen now," Plummer

Ledger's Death: A Timeline Of Events
Reporting: John Slattery

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Nearly 48 hours into the investigation of actor Heath Ledger's sudden death, police have put together a timeline of the events in the house leading up to the mysterious discovery of his lifeless body.

According to investigators, Ledger's housekeeper arrived at his SoHo apartment on 421 Broome St. at 12:30 on Tuesday.

At 1 p.m., the housekeeper told police she saw Ledger in bed, and reported hearing him snoring.

At 2:45, masseuse Diana Wolozon arrives at the apartment, but says Ledger's bedroom door is closed.

By 3 p.m., Wolozon calls Ledger's cell phone, but he didn't answer.

Ten minutes later, Wolozon says she entered Ledger's bedroom, set up her massage table, approached the unresponsive actor, and shook him. She then called Ledger's friend, actress Mary-Kate Olson in Calfornia, who called private security guards.

Some time after that, Wolozon called Olson again and tells her, "I think he's dead."

Only then, at 3:26 p.m., did Wolozon call 911 and attempt to revive Ledger.

At 3:33, EMS and private security arrived. CPR was administered on Ledger.

At 3:36, Ledger was pronounced dead.

Pavement Art Becomes Shrine To Ledger
01/24/08  12:36:52

Cement art Heath Ledger and his young daughter Matilda created on the sidewalk near his former New York home has become an unlikely shrine to the movie star.

Ledger scribbled 'Matilda' in the wet cement after his two-year-old daughter stepped on the drying pavement in Brooklyn last summer.

Her print was joined by that of a former neighbor's dog, called Hugo.

Neighbor Roger Lang, who lived across the street from the apartment Ledger shared with his ex-fiancee, Matilda's mother Michelle Williams, confirmed the markings were the actors to stunned fans who gathered outside his old home on Wednesday morning.

Lang said. "It was a secret. It was a fun thing. He did it as a surprise for his family."

Fans have since placed carnations on the sidewalk near Ledger's footprint art - as a tribute to the actor.

I think that one of the most moving and beautiful tributes to Heath Ledger was a quote from Ang Lee appearing in an Associated Press report:

"Working with Heath was one of the purest joys of my life," said Ang Lee, who directed Ledger in "Brokeback Mountain."  "He brought to the role of Ennis more than any of us could have imagined -- a thirst for life, for love and for truth, and a vulnerability that made everyone who knew him love him.  His death is heartbreaking."

I think the grief about Heath Ledger becomes more profound as acceptance sinks in.  I tell you that when I first learned of it, I was in total disbelief.  Then I felt as if I wanted to be sick.  There's always going to be a million questions in my mind.  Could he have been saved had someone been in the bedroom with him?  Did he try in some way to get help before losing consciousness?  Could it have made a difference had 911 been called immediately?  Why oh why couldn't he have been more careful about medications?  Could it have been pneumonia?

I've been listening to the Brokeback soundtrack.  I had to stop because it was so painful.  In the context of Heath Ledger's death, listening to and seeing Brokeback again is simply too much to bear right now.  The way that Ennis dealt with the loss of Jack was unforgettable.  In Annie Proulx' story, Ennis would dream about Jack.  All Ennis had left of Jack were the memories that lived inside of him and Jack's precious shirt.  My hope is that we live on in the good memory of Heath Ledger and not in the regret.  Now we realize fully why Ennis said "Jack, I swear."  There are no existing words to measure this loss.

I am sorry to ramble on so.  I love you all.

God, I want so badly to go to NYC right now, just to see the tributes and the little footprint in the cement.  I would love to leave work and jump on a train and just go.  My mind still refuses to accept that he's gone.

Friends, similar warnings have been out since this morning.  I post it here just to make sure you are careful when you do searches on news articles about Heath.

There are many people out there who are poised to exploit this outpouring of grief for Heath.  Take extra precautions, especially when you don't have a firewall.

Malicious Websites Plague Ledger Search Results

By Greg McNevin

January 25, 2008: It hasn’t taken long for cyber criminals to launch a range of exploits playing off the death of Heath Ledger, with a myriad of malicious websites already popping up in an attempt to hijack search results and the PC’s of web surfers shocked by the news.

Trend Micro is warning that millions of people around the world searching for information on the Australian star are at risk as malicious websites infiltrate legitimate search engine results.

Discovered by Trend Micro research project manager Ivan Macalintal within hours of the tragic news, the malicious resemble those that plagued Google’s results late last year, turning up when users use search terms such as “heath” and “ledger”.

Like last year, and again recently when malware authors took advantage of the death of Benazir Bhutto, when a bad link is clicked users are automatically redirected to another site that requires them to download a “new version of ActiveX Object.”

This begins a series of redirections that end in the download of different malicious files such as TROJ_RENOS.LZ, and WORM_NUCRP.GEN according to Trend Micro.

“Piggybacking on newsworthy events is not new,” writes Trend Micro’s Bernadette Irinco on the security firms official blog. “In this case, malware authors simply used news of Ledger’s death to jumpstart massive redirections as they know many people are wont to do searches on this hot news item.”

Irinco does note, however, that there seems to be a bigger story behind this particular attack.

“Upon deeper analysis, researchers find reason to believe that these malicious URLs are among those resulting from the suspected hacking of Web servers of a certain Czech hosting provider,” writes Irinco. “Hacked sites residing in these servers carry a malicious JavaScript code, which, when accessed, follow the same redirection algorithm as the Heath Ledger links.”

The firm says it has initiated communication with the Czech CERT, and adds that in the meantime users can use its threat protection to secure themselves.

Thank you for that information tpe. It is unfortunate that such precautions need to be taken.

AnitaSmith, thank you for posting the pic of the cement art. How lovely.

For everyone, just a reminder:

Let us please keep speculation as to Heath’s state of mind and the cause of his death to personal messages or conversations. Again, we really don’t know anything conclusive, and personal opinions as to how he spent his final days and what he was feeling are just that. I am sure that each of us clings to the image that seems accurate to us, and there are likely to be many different variations of those impressions.

What we can do for each other at this time, and have been doing so beautifully these last couple of days, is to continue to lean on and support one another through our grief process, and to remember that this is a place we can always come to celebrate his life, and share our sorrow at his passing.

No censorship is intended here. Rather a sensitivity to the feelings of all our members and visitors, who are taking comfort in the fellowship to be found on this forum and in this thread. And to show respect to Heath, who was an intensely private person, and his family, in honor of his memory.

Thank you for your consideration. :ghug:

Heath Ledger's father heads to NY

Heath Ledger's heartbroken father is coming to New York to collect his son's body.

Kim Ledger is expected to fly here tomorrow and begin the painful business of making arrangements to bury the 28-year-old "Brokeback Mountain" star, who was found dead in a SoHo loft on Tuesday.

"He wants to be with his son," said Dominick Capella, director of the Frank E. Campbell funeral home on Madison Ave. "That will take place here."

There has been no decision on whether Ledger will be laid to rest in his native Perth, Australia, or his adopted city of New York.

Hollywood stars to farewell Ledger ahead of Perth burial
January 24, 2008 02:27pm

HOLLYWOOD stars are expected to farewell Heath Ledger at a service in Los Angeles this week ahead of his burial in Perth and a possible memorial service at his school, Guildford Grammar.

The Los Angeles service could take place as early as Saturday Australian time, a source close to the family told The Daily Telegraph.

It is believed tentative plans have been made and supermodel Gemma Ward's mother hinted at "an event in Los Angeles'' which would be attended by Ledger's father, Kim.

"I anticipate (Gemma) will be coming home for the premiere movie The Black Balloon but she will probably attend and even in Los Angeles at the end of the week with (Legder's) father,'' Claire Ward had told The Australian.

However, it is understood that Ledger will be buried in Perth, where he may be farewelled at a memorial service at his old school, the prestigious Guildford Grammar.

The 28-year-old's body is understood to have been transferred to New York's Frank E Campbell funeral chapel after an inconclusive autopsy, ahead of a final trip home to his family in Perth.

A spokesman for the renowned US funeral company confirmed it was handling the arrangements for Ledger's family.

``They have contacted us for the arrangements, I am unable to give any more information,'' he said.

Guildford Grammar School has offered to hold a memorial service for Ledger.

A spokeswoman said the family had not decided whether to accept the offer from the school, where the young Heath Ledger excelled in sport and drama.

The Frank E Campbell funeral chapel's website says it has served heads of state, United Nations ambassadors, dignitaries, royalty, film stars and families from all walks of life.

A Melbourne artist has released his never-before-seen portrait of Heath Ledger a day after the Australian actor's death.

Docklands-based Vincent Fantauzzo's haunting portrait depicts Ledger as three separate figures, one looking straight on, the others whispering into each of the central figure's ears.

Fantauzzo painted the actor's portrait with the intention of entering it into the prestigious Archibald Prize, Australia's premier portraiture competition.

I saw this on the television last night, I am sure this portrait will win the Archibald Prize it is so beautiful. When it goes on display I will go to the Art Gallery to see it for real.

Uncles: Heath Ledger Was 'Vibrant and Fun-Loving'
THURSDAY JANUARY 24, 2008 01:10 PM EST

By Stephen M. Silverman

Photo by: Vera Anderson / WireImage

Haydn Ledger, an uncle of the late Heath Ledger, dismisses any suggestion that his "vibrant and fun-loving" nephew might have done anything rash such as take his own life.

"It just wouldn't come into the equation at all," the elder-generation Ledger said on Thursday's CBS The Early Show, speaking from a TV studio in Perth, Australia.

About the news of the death, which he called "a tragic accident," the uncle said, "We only found out yesterday morning, along with everybody else."

Haydn Ledger appeared on the program with another uncle of the actor's, Mike Ledger. Both said Heath had a joy for living. "No family gathering or party ever got going until he was in the room," said Haydn.

Both men also passed on answering a question about Heath's recently being depressed, as has been suggested by some friends of the late leading man. "Inwardly or outwardly, we can't really comment on that," said Haydn.

Mike Ledger said that was a question for Heath's parents to answer "at a period of time to come."

For now, said the uncles, they wished to remember their nephew as "family-orientated" and as the loving father of his 2-year-old daughter, Matilda Rose. To Heath, said Mike Ledger, being a father "meant everything in the world."

Reflect on life, not on death
Andrew Johnson
Issue date: 1/24/08 Section:
Arts & Entertainment

"I hope they finished filming The Dark Knight."

That was the first thought that entered my head last night when I heard the news that actor Heath Ledger had been found dead his in his New York apartment. I know, I know, I'm a jerk -- a guy dies and the first thing I think of is how it will affect the movie. But I'm not the only one who thought that, it seems. In fact, it seems like people everywhere care more about the circumstances and the effects of his death, rather than the simple fact that he died.

A few recent articles even have headlines like, "Ledger's autopsy inconclusive; details will take 10 days" -- as if to say, "In two weeks, we'll be back with the latest gossip and speculation!"

I guess that's to be expected in a culture where the cult of celebrity is growing larger every day. Americans are obsessed with celebrities, and I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because they represent success, and wealth -- you know, the American dream. Maybe it's just because we're jealous. Whatever the reason, you've got to wonder why people can tell you the name of Tom and Katie's kid but don't know who won the last political primary.

There is a common perception nowadays that because someone is "famous" we should devote countless hours of attention to their lives, and not just their lives, but their deaths as well. Remember when Anna Nicole Smith died, and how for weeks you couldn't turn to CNN without seeing her face plastered everywhere? I'm not saying it wasn't newsworthy, but surely there were other more important and relevant events happening in the world during that time. What does that say about us as a culture? Is that something good or bad? I don't have an answer, I'm just saying it's something to think about.

A few minutes after the Ledger story broke, I got an IM from a friend telling me that Wikipedia was going bonkers. Users were editing Ledger's entry to include what was then just speculation about how he had died. One minute it said he had died of an intentional heroin overdose. Then you'd hit Refresh, only to find it was now listed as accidental. Some people even edited the entry as a prank, posting that he'd been found wearing his Joker make-up, and other film-related falsities. How respectful.

Hollywood has lost one of its brightest young stars, but rather than simply acknowledge this fact, the media (not to mention the majority of average citizens) immediately jumped all over the story and started implying things that may or may not be true. Heck, it's been two days since he died, and I'm still not sure what really happened. Was it an accident or a suicide? Was it related at all to his work, particularly his new role as a twisted psychopath in the new Batman movie? Was he a drug addict?

What I'm wondering is: does any of that matter?

A talented performer is gone, and the world -- at least from the eyes of a filmgoer -- is worse without him. Perhaps before we jump to conclusions and make investigations and discover the "truth" behind his death, we should take a few minutes to reflect on his life. It's a courtesy usually offered to non-celebrities. Why should the rich and famous be treated any differently?

I remember when I first saw Ledger on screen, in the Mel Gibson war drama The Patriot. It wasn't a breakthrough performance, but it certainly indicated that there were some serious acting chops beneath the pretty face. It would only be a few years later when he'd be nominated for an Academy Award for Brokeback Mountain. And with all the publicity surrounding his new role in The Dark Knight, it seemed like he was on the verge of superstardom. All that, and the main questions being asked now is, "Did the apartment belong to Mary-Kate Olsen?" and, "Is it because he got too immersed in the role of the Joker?"

I wonder if Ledger could see us now, what he'd think about all the uproar. Maybe he'd feel honored we care enough to get so riled up about the details of his death.

But then again, maybe he'd think this was all just a big joke.

The most difficult scene was the paragraph where, on the mountain, Ennis holds Jack and rocks back and forth, humming, the moment mixed with childhood loss and his refusal to admit he was holding a man.

- Annie Proulx -

From the vibration of the floorboard on which they both stood, Ennis could feel how hard Jack was shaking.

They are a well known group of psychopaths and a cult, they all belong to the same family either by birth or marriage, you get the picture.

They are totally evil and independent from any church or religious organisations. One of the groups on their most hated list is the Catholic church! So you see what I mean.

They love it when we get all worked up about them, because they are so sick they love the confrontation and the publicity it generates.

Indeed, the best way to deal with them is to ignore them completely.

Friends, as FlwrChild has said, let's try to focus on Heath's life and his achievements.  There is so much there to celebrate.
