Some lines I couldn’t hear clearly
« on: Feb 07, 2006, 11:36 AM »
In the scene which Jack was presenting the farm machine (the big wheel) to the crowd and Lureen was working at the office.  There were two gentlemen having conversation about Jack. I couldn’t hear what they said exactly. Was it like something...“he used to drag”

If so, it means the rumors has been moving around in Childress and lead to the murder at the end?

(English is not my first language. Please don’t mind if there any grammar mistakes on my post :) )
Jack: Hoorayyy!!
Ennis: I am gettin' tired of you dumbass missin'

Laundrymat, the conversation hasd more to do with Jack's former stint at the Rodeo.

Farmer 1: Didn't that piss-ant used to ride bulls?

Farmer 2: He used to try...

Lurren look disappointed at her husband and says nothing...

I cannot see Jack having done drag.   However, I think it is much more possible in his case than that of Ennis.

I think Lureen looked up disappointed with her father during the farm equipment scene.  He never showed respect for Jack.  The mirror scene is where Jack turns off the TV and tells the old man to sit down.  Lureen shows some delight in the fact that Jack makes a stand and that her father was put in his place.

I think Lureen looked up disappointed with Jack.  She could have said something in his defense (I mean how about "that's my husband" that's all it would have taken and the men would have been embarrassed and apologetic - it's a WOMAN they've offended).  But, she doesn't do that.  I'm disappointed in her.

Yep.  Lureen's obviously not a shy woman, so why didn't she say something to defend Jack?  I think that scene shows part of the reason she became so wrapped up in numbers and work.  It wasn't just the Jack/Ennis triangle; she was disappointed in her choice of a husband, too.  Her father's disapproval of Jack probably had a big influence on her as well.

I defend Lureen in the thanksgiving scene
she's clearly proud of Jack  in that case....and I think she loves him much more than his father.
(after all she married him even if her father didn't like him)
At that time, in that place (and not only then or there..)  women had just to keep quiet when men were arguing with each other,
her mother too remains silent all the time.

Even if the two guys had been talking about how he used to drag, they probably would have been referring to drag racing. I'm from a small town in Texas, and that's what I would assume if heard someone say that. Most people here don't call wearing drag, doing drag. Well, except for this drag queen friend of mine...

I am not sure about this.  I do know he seemed to be mumbling something to Jack right before he shoves Jack against the wall and kisses him -- I had assumed it was "Come here..."

Thanks dirtbiker. I can't tell you how many times I have watched and rewatched this scene trying to understand what Jacks words. By the way (off topic a moment), I read your story, it really moved me deeply.

No problem, Handell. You could turn on the subtitles on the DVD and confirm the hard to hear dialog ;)

Tizi I always thought he said "Later" after he did the nuzzle.
Tpe I also hear him say "Come here" before he kisses Jack  :)

I guess I'm going to pull out the DVD and turn on the captions.  If I see confirmation of both I'm going to just melt.

I have headphones and can hear a lot more than I did before I got them. He definitely says Come here before he shoves him into the wall.  <^( I love when they embrace and Jack says Ennis and it goes right into Sonofabitch almost like it's one word.  <^(

I don't have headphones but I heard the "come here" too....and the mumbled "later" as he does the nuzzle.

Oh, and that "Ennisonofabitch" thing....adorable <^(

I'm more of a Jack/Jake girl, but Ennis's "come here" just makes me melt inside, the way he says it, sort of whispering and growling at the same time... <^(

I watched the reunion scene with the subtitles on a few months ago, just to check what was said, and as I remember it, the nuzzle Ennis says "hey..." first, then something like "let's go" or "come on" :-\\ I remember it cause I was surprised, I always thought he said "later" :-\\ It sounds like "later" and I want him to say "later",  so as far as I'm concerned, the subtitles are wrong and he says "later".So there!  ::)

The subtitles aren't always right anyway, cause before FNIT it has Jack saying it's too late to go the sheep, but it's Ennis saying it (unless I'm mistaken, but it sounds like Ennis to me). And in SNIT,where Ennis is supposed to be saying "I'm sorry", even though I've tried to convince myself it's that, cause I really want it to be, but it just sounds like Jack saying "it's alright" to me :( ???
There was some open space between what he knew and what he tried to believe, but nothing could be done about it, and if you can't fix it you've got to stand it.

Very curious, CrimsonSky.  I must say that I had not turned on the subtitles.  The discrepancy between what we think we hear and the subtitles is quite strange, although I had noticed this before in some other dvds.  And yes, I do think Ennis said "Hey" quite distinctly...

A word of caution on putting too much faith in the subtitles. In several cases they DO NOT match the dialog. Example -The campfire scene where Ennis tells about his Sis and how he and his brother worked in Worland, Jack replies "Friend, that's more words than . . . . " The subtitles show him saying "Man, that's more words than. . . " !!! Quite a difference. There's other's too, it's fun to watch and see how many you can spot.
The guys that do subtitles in Hollywood are not the hgihest paid crew around.

Another cuiosity is to listen to the French dialog version with English subtitles. One incredible ommission in this version of the soundtrack is in the FNIT when Ennis spits on his hand, the whole spitting sound effect for this action is left out of the French dialog version! Maybe there is some cultural reason for this, spitting may be extremely vulgar or something, but it seems like a very significant ommission.

Sometimes Ennis whispers so low that the captions don't even register, but did hear the "hey" and the "later" and I coul d've sworn I heard "little darlin" just as he grabs Jack by the lapels to push him back to the wall.
..."yet he is suffused with a sense of pleasure because Jack Twist was in his dream"...
