Flicking the belt buckle  is a true Jackism-- a little show-offy, a little flirty and a whole lotta cute.

"Jackism" - that is a great definition! Well done, Cherry cake! Can we make an adjective form too ? E.g. "He was so jackistic"? :) :)
Thanks Russianman,

SURE, I WOULD BE HONORED..

I did not think about the fact that his crotch was right there, until I read this thread. I've been shown a rodeo belt buckle before. Believe me, men with those belt buckles want everybody that they come in contact with to notice. They act like it's a freakin' Noble Peace Prize or something. He was being flirty with it, though.

It is now in my dictionary.  ;D

Am torn about this one...lean toward Jack being a showoff, wanting to gain some esteem in Ennis' eyes... didn't really think much about his crotch being right there, now maybe if he had been pointing with his finger, then... and calling Jack a slut is going a little too far don't you think?  At the time he met Ennis, bet that he had few sexual encounters.  Am not trying to defend him, but you'd think we were a bunch of Puritans.  Would be willing to bet that most of the people who call him a slut have rung up a lot more points than Jack, even through the whole movie.  Know I have, and don't consider myself a slut.

I'd have to agree. The winning rodeo buckle is a big deal to those involved. It's like winning the NY Marathon
is to those that race in it. I think Jack was just trying to make conversation.

Little darlin I'm a slut, just without the history. I was always just too d**n shy and inhibited. I got some notches on my gun belt but...... :-[ Of course it saved my life, so I'm not complaining. The belt buckle was just the ultimate "jackism". I love Jack but he's a peacock. He loves to strut and show his tailfeathers. .............. Dah, listen to me. It's like Jack is alive and reading this.

i agree, with the horse bucking and the belt buckle and  with jumping around pretending to be on a bull after Ennis says his daddy thought all rodeo cowboys were fook-ups :) It is not a bad thing, in the same way beeing a male slut isn't a bad thing ( for some reason it is worse if a women is it ). Calling jack a slut is based on the time he lived in, where both men and women were expected to get married as virgins and stay that way ( well, at least on the surface ;) )

Now Esme, you really didn't mean that you were suppose to remain a virgin after you got married did you?   ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

That sure would put a damper on the wedding night.   ;)

Well I couldn't think of the word you were looking for either so I went to the dictionary and these are possible selections. Take your pick.

allegiance, constancy, devotedness, devotion, faith, faithfulness, fealty, fidelity, loyalty

I am guessing fidelity is the one I was thinking about but faithful it is :) thanks :)

Hi

Just wanted to point out one of my favourite scenes is when Jack, returning from having a piss, flicks at his belt buckle.  I thought it was a very amusing and quite flirty thing to do (and Jake did it brilliantly).  Does anyone know what the significance of it is? My guess is it is to show Jack's personality but I thought there were other overtones to it.  Any ideas?

Alicat

omigosh THANK YOU! I was going to make a thread about this. I LOVE that scene! It's hilarious! And the fliry way Jake did it was perfect. It makes Ennis look at the belt buckle, and it's a bit of Jack showing off, 'cause he's so into the rodeo thing. It shows his personality, his flirtiness, and as for other significance/overtones, well...as others said, he's trying to impress Ennis.

It's totally a "made you look" type of thing. He gets the satisfaction of making Ennis look there by putting attention to there by flicking the belt buckle.

Also, it gets him some conversation with Ennis when they talk about the rodeo f***ups.
BBM rocks my socks!   :3
