Well, earlier today I was castratin' calves.

so, probably the most silly thread around here, which i had to open after that bit thomas answered in the ennis cuteness sexyness thread about me quoting that line as being pure cuteness ... i looked it up but it seems there wasn't a thread dedicated to that line yet (if there was, then tell me where, i'd love to read it :)), so ...

because oh yes, i agree. i love ennis accidental/incidental humor too. but in my silly mind that line turns out to be more than just that too ... and i wonder if i'm the only one seeing too much in it (after all, i AM crazy, i know), or if there are other strange theory about it.

so ... here is a glimpse of my silly mind.
this isn't the first time ennis uses that line. it's his brush-off line whenever a woman  try to get close to him and he wants her to leave him alone (ps, of course, he always wants them women to leave him alone). and it's his brush off line probably because the first time he had said it without thinking because, well, it had been just the truth of what he had been doing that day, it had turned out to work quite well.
i can't help but see a hint of "let's see how you're going to take that" in his eyes before he says it, and then some kind of surprise when it turns out - this time - not to make cassie uncomfortable enough to leave him be ...
now, i hope i ain't the only nut around here. so please people, show up with your theories :)

I do agree with you: that Ennis was probably being slightly provocative in this remark -- waiting to see how Cassie would react and perhaps getting her to leave him alone.  We also see him almost on edge when she puts her feet on his lap -- we sense that he almost resented this flirtation.  But Cassie was not to be brushed off that easily, and Ennis was too passive to keep on pushing her away.


So yes, there was humor; but there was also a partial attempt to let her lose interest in him...

Ennis the dummy, or the crafty fox? In this same scene he also makes use of another phrase, exactly the same phrase he used years earlier when Jack came on to him FNIT:

"Whuta' you doin?"

As if he doesn't know. When a guys grabs your hand and sticks in his crotch, when a gal puts her feet right in your, ahem, lap. Just play dumb Ennis, then maybe it'll go away, you won't have to do or admit anything. Neither Cassie nor Jack was gonna' be put off by this guy playin' dumb. The honey was too sweet for these bees to stay away. And Ennis is too eager to beat them off. Eager for Jack in one case, and maybe eager for Cassie to prove he wasn't queer in another.

Thanks vanessa and jackster!  And jackster -- that play at ignorance on Ennis's part is definitely revealing.

I am still surprised sometimes of how Ennis allowed him himself to get into this relationship with Cassie.  Perhaps it was primarily from loneliness, aside from trying to put up a facade of normalcy in his life.  He didn't especially like the relationship, but he certainly didn't mind it...

Oh,yes,Vanessa¡; Ennis was a tasty honey if we bear in mind that three person fell in love with him and,at least in two cases,this love endured a lifetime... :c)
As regards to his attitude before Cassie's innuendos,well,this "What are you doing?"-or "Whuta' you doin' by Jackster;excuse me,but my poor English is still academic... ;D -for me can be a way,somehow,to cut the other's advance and give himself time to react and play his cards,couldn't it be?.And the reference to the castrated calves,I agree in that it can be a way,in this case,to stop her advance also,but to give him time to run away-no necessarily to react...-.If he kept on deepening in his relationship with Cassie,is because,meanwhile,he realised he needed some woman in order to have a respectable image before his narrow-minded community,IMO.

Vanessa, thank you for starting the thread, asking that question, and that beautiful phrase, the honey is just too sweet to keep the bees away...no ma'am!

Jackster,  ;D I guess we are a whole bunch of nuts in this thread. I'm with you on Ennis being an old fox - he didn't want to commit or nothing, but was lonely enough to take what's offered, as long as he didn't have to admit/commit to nothin'. Talk about commitment issues. He couldn't even commit to living with his own daughter when Alma Jr asked if she could move in with him. Poor Cassie... :(...she never had a chance.

Accidental humor...or foxy humor...like his folks missing the only curve in miles, ran themselves off. I think it's why Ennis and Jack got along so well, they both had a streak of humor a mile wide, if you know the on ramp.

I also think that this statement shows how doen-to-earth Ennis really was.  Perhaps subliminally, it was also a challenge to Cassie on a much deeper level: "Can you accept me for who I am?"

yep, i really believe in that too lance ... they understood each other's humor so perfectly, right from the start. that line about his parents is really ennis. it's like he, i'm tough, i can even joke about it, no big deal. but jack sees it's just a facade to hide the hurt. and they used humor to tell so many things to each other all the time ... ennis bringing the beans, for exemple. so sweet it makes my heart jumps each time ... they had their own codes, things other people wouldn't get but which they get, because it's their, and only their. and you can only achieve this level of communication when you really know someone ...

Those couple lines...from Jack's "Your folks ran you off?" to..."Sh!#t" was the subtle humor that's pure Ennis, and the superb reading skill that's pure Jack. Ennis tried to hide behind his humor (probably as he had always done, with his brother and sister, and with his pals) but here comes Jack who can spot the hurt, and responded like it's the most natural and gut-wrenching thing in the world.

Then Ennis felt naked and needed a cigarette to hide behide, "May I?"...jumping ahead four years to the window waiting for Jack...flip, flip, flip...Here is the man who gets me, why did I let him go?

Gotta take this opportunity to put in here whut is just about my favorite scene (you might guess). Love these guys whoopin' it up, jokin', punchin' each other, fallin' ass backward. I've said before about this humorous scene, they were so in LOVE here - they just didn't know it yet. But like you say Vanessa, they're sayin' "I love you" to each other right here in their own way, like so many lovers do. Often thought it looks like Jack wants to kiss Ennis right now, but holds off.

wow jackster, you're damn right, that last pic :) i bet though by then jack already knew he was in love. but ennis didn't yet, of course (in my opinion he didn't really had a clue before awaking to find his hand on jack's jeans :)) no problem about the off-topic, any excuse will do to talk about that scene, huh, pure cuteness :)

Exactly.  We can read these incidents as a sort of challenge, correct?  And yes, you are making sense.
