Looking at the screen capture here, I am struck by the way in which they are leaning on each other--you can see Jack leaning into Ennis so much that one leg seems to be off the ground.  I love the utter spontaneity, the passion, the way in which they completely dissolve into one another . . . .  <^(

Looks like he is using his leg so that he pushes Ennis into the railing as hard as he can...

I watched my DVD last night and played this scene in slow motion.  I am so floored by the sutble expressions I miss when played at the normal speed. It's as though these two can't hold each other tight enough.  Their eyes and smiles tell all during the embrace.

Oh yeah - slow motion is definitely the way to go in this scene! You can't see any of the expressions at normal speed.

Another thing I noticed in slo-mo was that when Jack slams Ennis back to the other wall and moves in for the kiss, they actually miss each other's lips first time but quickly readjust into a full on snog!

Yes slo-mo is definitely the way to watch this scene! You see so much more.

I have never really paid attention to how close they are here......mostly in films when , at least two straight actors playing gay, kiss they are not so, well, close...

Cain't ya just feel the tension??  :^^)

Oh this scene is just gorgeous, and so so passionate.  I love this screen cap, just seeing them holding on to each other, as close as they can possibly be.

You can so feel the tension Esme, the minute they kissed it was like - wow! - this is Ennis making up for 4 years, for not doing this 4 years ago when Jack so wanted him not to leave.

I love the bit when they pull away from each other for a second, and Ennis looks around - he's completely breathless, and Jack has hold of his shirt, and is desparately trying to kiss Ennis again.  I love their faces when Ennis touches Jack's face - Jack is completely shocked to his core at what has just happened, and Ennis has just done the thing he has wanted to do, what has been inside of him for 4 years.   Absolutely beautiful and passionate.

I love that scene...I have seen it so many times and every time I watch music vids that's the scene that makes me smile "inside" !!!

There is so much tension, so much passion that comes out of this kiss.

It's like they are finalky being set free, 4 years of waiting and thinking and frustration!!

and finally this is it, they meet again!!! I think that in that scene, short story and movie, it is the first and probably only time that Ennis acts out of character...he doesn't even realise it, but like it is said before, all the fears of being seen ...poof...they just vanish...yes he does look, and does pull Jack to the stair case, but at the same time, I think that Ennis doesn't care ... he has Jack in front of him, and that's it!!! He is gone!!!

Jack on the other hand, he is still the dreamer, he looks hopeful (NI don't see him frightened! Curious maybe or unsure but not frightened IMO)
And after the shock of having Ennis kiss him, he finally kisses back!

This is one of my favourite scenes...so well acted...every time I see it, I get butterflies in my stomach...it's just so perfect, even better than what I had hoped for after reading AP's shirtstory!!

I agree Froggy.

Some people are actually in tears when they see this scene.  And rightfully so.  It is so moving.  It is the epitome of love lost and found again.

Poof indeed ;)

I agree tho, it is so unlike Ennis, the only time he REALLY let's go... I just want to close my eyes every time Alma comes out and sees them. I love the two nights in the tent to but this is just so passionate and both of them are in it so much. And like I said earlier, they are indeede CLINGING to eachother...they need eachother

I still remember the first time I saw this scene... I haven't read the short story before that so I didn't know what was coming. When they embraced, it was like fireworks exploding inside me... I thought, finally, FINALLY they're together. I felt like I was the one who waited four years for this to happen. Ennis shut his eyes and had this look that said "I can't believe it, he's finally in my arms again". And then when they pulled back and Ennis glanced around it was SO obvious that he wanted to kiss Jack, the sexual tension between them was so intense. But I didn't think he'd do it, because they were outside where people could see them, I honestly didn't expect that... So when Ennis grabbed Jack and pushed him onto the wall and kissed him that passionately it literally took my breath away, I think my heart had skipped a beat there! It was obvious that Ennis couldn't control himself, his feelings for Jack just flooded him and the passion took hold of him, and it was totally convincing. I think that Ennis had surprised himself as much as he surprised Jack, he didn't plan it, he just couldn't help it.

I'll second all the sentiment here - this scene is a monumental one in a monumental movie.
I think that one reason this scene has such a personal impact on us is because, at some level,
we all craze the intensity of emotion and love shown in this scene. In "real day to day life" how often, if
ever, do we get to feel and experience such passion and intensity? Typically, we become complacent
with the ones that we love. Personally, that is something that I have been working on after having
seen this move. I am trying to be less complacent and more expressive with my outward signs of affection
for my loved ones. Admittedly, I have been inconsistent with this, but, overall, I feel as though I have progressed.
I keep after myself to not allow myself to take the love in my life for granted. Like life itself, it is fragile
and can be taken away at anytime, as aptly shown in BBM, so it should be cherished...

You've said a mouthful rpmnh!!  I've only had one person in my life where a similar reunion could have happened.  He was the first person I thought of during my second viewing of this film.  If a reunion could take place I would probably be an exact copy of Ennis from this scene.

This is the most wonderful representation of an explosion of repressed longing and need for closeness and the desire to crawl under the skin of the one you love.

It's also how every reunion should be, and often isn't, which is why it's so affecting. the daily routine has a deadening effect, and it's possible to see Jack and Ennis as free of this and able to experience the intensity of first love over and over in their infrrquent meetings. But the attraction of this is that it's so spontaneous, an outpouring of feeling that they can't control and that Ennis barely has the presence of mind to hide from the public gaze. Yet that iisn't worrying - this is something so private no-one would want it on display.

No kidding!  What are "they" afraid of, that "they" have to meet love with hate?? We should all be lucky enough to have someone love us so much they'd kiss us that way!  And to hang on to a relationship under hellish conditions for 20 years!  This reunion scene completely demonstrates how powerful love is, whomever you feel it for.  How can you ask someone to turn away from the best part of their humanity?? I'm sure they both held the memory of this moment in their hearts as things got more difficult for them.  Like a touchstone to get them through the hard days apart.

Keren, what a wonderful post! I love hearing about how people reacted when they watched certain scenes, and this is probably the one that blew me away the most, as in not expecting what happened to actually happen!  I remember watching it with my friend, and the scene when Ennis is sitting by the window, and pacing around, getting another drink, smoking another cigarette, tapping his leg impatiently, hardly acknowledging Alma or Jnrs existence in the same room, and I remember saying to my friend "you can taste the tension and the anticipation".....the way Heath was able to convey the longing he had for Jack to arrive was amazing.  And I have to agree with you Keren, I honestly didnt have any clue at all that Ennis would react that way, that he would grab Jack, push him back into the wall and kiss him so passionately, so strongly......I think I probably felt how Jack looked!!!  Totally taken by surprise, but so so glad Ennis had taken the plunge and given into his desires.   I think Ennis didnt know how he was going to react either, but seeing Jack, the way they hugged, breathing the life out of each other, he probably knew then that there was only one course of action and that was to show Jack how much he had missed him.    I remember feeling so happy for Ennis that he kissed Jack, and happy for Jack that his 14 hour drive had been worth it!

Definatly... what was Jack expecting... honestly....Ennis had punched him and told him he would marry Alma instead of see him again last time they saw eachother...he could have gotten a hello, handshake, had to buy a beer and then a goodbye :)

We know that Jack was probably hoping for Ennis to realise that they were meant to be together, but he probably had no idea that Ennis would express himself the way he did.....I mean, the way he shoved him towards that wall, it was either going to be a punch or a kiss, and Jack's face tells me he was expecting Ennis' fist in his face, not his mouth!!!  ;)

It was recorded the other night Patriot1 - there's a whole thread in the awards subforum....
He will be eternally missed, but he will never be forgotten

Christopher Nolan, accepting the Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe on Heath's behalf.

He was, as an actor and a professional and a human being, one of a kind

Charles Roven, accepting Heath's BAFTA.

This award tonight would have humbly validated Heath's quiet determination to be truly accepted by you all here — his peers within an industry he so loved.

Kim Ledger, accepting Heath's Oscar.
