Given Ennis's taciturnity, and the fact that both of them are fairly uneducated and with restricted experience of life, and they live in a society where reticence and stoicism are valued, I rather doubt that she would even think of raising such a difficult and dangerous topic even if she had the words, which she doesn't. Words are powerful magic; if you name something, you give it an existence, which is why Ennis denies he's queer.

Yes, excellent, ww.  Not only these people and their society, but the times -- things just weren't all out in the open like they are now.  She never said anything all those years.  Wouldn't a story from her POV be interesting?  How her marriage to Ennis was.  I wonder if she had friends she could talk to.  As time went on and she learned about these things she'd had no knowledge of.  Nowdays, she would do a tell-all.  OT, I guess, sorry.

Then I wonder if she ever discussed  any of this with Monroe, her second husband. What is his thinking about Alma and Ennis's failed marriage?  Was Jack crying after Ennis kissed him against the wall?

Maybe Jack is crying because he's just seen the love of his life after 4 years and he's over welmed with all these emotions that the only thing he can do is cry... or maybe because he's hurt...that kinda looked painful...

Yeah, I don't think Jack was crying either. I think he was stunned and he was certainly, um, dishevelled, but he wasn't crying.

Crying? Maybe... I sure as heck wouldn't blame him one bit.  He redlined it all the way to Ennis not knowing the reception was going to get, but Ennis sure showed him.  The kiss was unexpected from both, and I think Jack was knocked for a loop.

He's showing the effects of the release of a huge amount of tension - building up to sending thepc, waiting for the reply, not knowing what will happen, thinking about it all the way there, then that kiss. What they're just discovered is the physical attraction between them - this thing, as Ennis later says - and how almost overwhelmingly strong it is. This is the beginning of a whole new chapter and I'm not sure either knows what to think - the urge to get off to the motel is dictated by the physical fascination; it's not till after that's satiated for the moment that they have to deal with the realities.

Thank You for the validation TPE, amazing isn't it...the way we as humans see and interpret what we intake so differently.  As some people never hear the "I love You" whisper in the closet scene or even the naughty things Jack was saying in the FNIT.  The welling of tears just after the kiss was what initially got me good in the reunion scene.

I was thinking...Look how happy he is, he's nearly in tears. After all those years of missing Ennis, thinking about him, wondering if he felt the same.  The hurt of putting himself "out there" and seeking him out and being shot down by Mr.Aguirre, going through the motions with Lureen, while wishing for Ennis. The never having the feeling of fitting in elsewhere. Then the anticipation of the LONG drive with probably a million thoughts racing through his head, then BOOM, hits him like a ton of bricks when he gets the feeling of validation, acceptance and love when he discovers his feelings are shared by the object of his affection and love of his life, Ennis.

Some of the most powerful emotion EVER put to screen IMO.

*SIGH* .... oh yes, so much emotions. I'm thinking of him driving to Riverton, so so excited... all those hours on the road, I doubt it he even stopped for a rest! he was probably out of his mind with excitment and anticipation, dying to see Ennis again after four years apart. and then to finally be in Ennis's arms again, and to be kissed by him like that - can there be any greater joy than that?
The truth is... sometimes I miss you so much I can hardly stand it.

I've just thought of something. Do you think Jack "read between the lines" of Ennis's reply postcard - You Bet - and realised how Ennis felt, or do you think he was unsure of how Ennis was going to react when he arrived in Riverton? I mean, when they parted it may have appeared to Jack that Ennis had no wish to continue their relationship (the punch, refusal to commit to returning to Brokeback, repeating that he and Alma were getting married) so he must have been nervous when he sent the postcard.

My personal feeling is that Jack did what he did so often over the years and read the meaning behind Ennis's words. I think if Ennis had simply replied with his address it may not have been as obvious - but "You Bet" sounds excited and happy and I think Jack realised that. He wouldn't have expected Ennis to kiss him in broad daylight like he did, but I think he did know (as he says in the motel) that things were going to get physical between them again.

Good point, pretty vague, the "you bet" Could be non-gallant...SURE SEE YOU THEN or could mean...CANT WAIT!!!

I don't speak American all that well, but couldn't "You bet" be either as confirmation of the naswer to Jack's implied question "if your[ Jack can't spell!] still there"?

Or just " Yes"?

I'm sure Jack read it as enthusiasm, then he had time to think about it, specially when he was on the road, and start getting nervous - Ennis's reaction must have been both surprise and a relief. I suppose he could have just said hello and offered to go for the drink Jacj had suggested, but I don;t see Ennis making polite conversation - the ruch into Jack's arms is much more with his character, particularly some of the description of him in the ss.

Iwonder how Jack must have felt when he saw that two-word response.  It was so open and yet so ambiguous -- full of unsaid or perhaps imagined possibilities.  Jack must have been quite elated and nervous at the same time...

It's another example of actions speaking more loudly than words - there are many in the movie. Actions and body language are at least as important as words in BBM and they don;t lie, even when words do.

With Ennis just having his biggest wish granted to see Jack again after that scrap on the mountain, before they parted. And Jack seeing Ennis Take Those Steps 2 at a time, I'd be leaping in those arms too!

I'd be leaping,diving, drowning...in those arms too!

I'm still wondering what it would be like if Alma and Jack actually did have confrontation over Ennis. That would be some knock down drag out fight huh?  THIS would be interesting to whatch! Alma:   What do you have that I don't have?    Jack:  You ever dance naked in the moonlight bitch!?  Smiles.

LOLOLOL  oh that  would have been great.

The next mornin' after reunion:

Alma: You know, you can come up for a cup of coffee.
Jack:  No thanks ma'ame I'm from Texas.
Alma: Texans don't drink coffee?
Jack: Not with our lover's wives, no ma'am.  That would be too awkward.  Ennis!  Let's get a move on.  I'm a starving from that work out last night and from that good stuff you gave me this mornin'
