This is what makes me love him, atalley, always.  :ghug:

Now y'all have got me all teary eyed :\'(  I agree with each one, but I think Tammy said it best...Jack was completely devoted to Ennis-for life. No matter how much he would be hurt and suffer, he loved Ennis until his dying breath, and in the end Ennis knew this and wept. :\'( :\'( :\'(

No matter how we questuion Jack's faithfulness in some ways, I think all of us agree that Jack truly loved Ennis and never ceased to love him -- even as he might have considered/decided to move on.    I think that kind of faithfulness counts the most.

I do too Thomas, and never questioned Jack's faithfulness.

I believe they were both faithful, each in their own way, and cannot judge either of them for the choices they felt they had to make.

Absolutely, FlwrChild. People make choices, and then change their minds. I don't see Jack as making the decision to move away from Ennis. I see him after the last meeting as still waiting...waiting for Ennis to make his move. Jack was making all the first moves for twenty years...the first post card, the first drive up, the first proposal to move in together, the first "king-of-the-road" drive after the divorce... Jack was enthusiasm personified. Ennis was the rock that ain't going nowhere, stuck in the past. Jack was waiting...for the rock to move. If the postcard found Jack alive, I have no doubt the ending would be happy, as happy as Shaun and Zach with Cody on the beach....

I like the way you put that lc. :)

And I don't think that Jack ever made the decision to move on either. I just don't think it was in him, no matter what he might have said to his father or anyone else. Ennis was his oxygen. He knew that whatever came of them, he could never breathe without him.

I agree. Jack wasn't moving on. He was holding still. In a way, I think he cherish the memory of the dozy embrace because it was Ennis who made the move to put his arms around Jack. It was not Jack making the moves on Ennis. So symbolically, Jack, after the last meeting, was waiting for Ennis, to decide what he wants, what he will do... Jack was tired of making the first move, and getting shot down...over and over.

As for Randall and the old man, I can see it as someone said, just a love-sick puppy reaching out to a near-by available bone to keep himself from being distracted long enough to forget the pain. But no drinking, nothing can dull the hole the absence of Ennis left in Jack's life. I like that expression. Ennis was his oxygen.

I know, I just thought of it myself while I was responding this morning. It's what I love about this place.

Thanks flwrChild and lance.  I do feel that if there was any desire on Jack's part to move on after the Final Confrontation, it would have been tentative at best.  "Waiting" is a good word to describe it, IMO.  In a way, nothing is final.

Do you remember that simple truth in "Shelter"?   You don't belong to anybody forever.   Then why bother?   Because it is worth it.  Whether or not faithfulness and friendship/love continues, we know that it is all worth it.
