BBM DVD COVER, what's your opinion?!
« on: Mar 21, 2006, 10:57 AM »
I personally don't like it and I'm disappointed, I can't believe Focus Features is kissing the academy members butts by adding their name in big letters in the DVD cover (It seems like that name is more important than the film, how ridiculous is that?!).  They ignored the film and refused to grade it even though they knew that BBM was the winner.  If they wanted to do that why couldn't they add all these important awards like the Golden Globes, Critics' Choice. Baftas etc... in small text.  Did you see how small the picture of BBM is?!  Of course, this will not stop me from getting my DVDs but I don't like what Focus Features did at all!

I SO agree...
I would have hoped for some Bafta thing on the front... And why is the image not filling up the whole front?

I agree this cover doesn't fit BBM at all.
They could have put a pic of the reunion kiss instead  ;D
I hope the french edition will have a better cover  :)

I don't like the cover - reminds me of those bargain bin releases of 20-year old movies.

And, yes, they could have been more creative with the awards banner

British ACADEMY of film and television arts AWARD - BEST PICTURE  ;)

I hope the UK cover is better...

The US full-screen version looks better. But not by much...

What does full screen mean? Is it a special version different from the usual one?

Yes, the non-widescreen version. Cropped to fit an old-fashioned 4:3 (square-ish) TV.

Ok. I'm a beginner at this but... I had to buy a tv + dvd player so that I can watch BBM when it comes out on DVD... When I press the zoom button once, I have the feeling it just chops a small part on the left+right. Isn't that almoust the same as the full screen version then?

The zoom would probably chop off the picture on all four sides.

The fullscreen DVD will probably be a pan&scan version, where the sides are just chopped off to make it a 4:3 shape, so you only see the a cut-out portion of the movie. It avoids your DVD player having to letterbox it when watching it on a 4:3 TV.

The unfortuante fact is that the general public doesn't know much about nor care much about awards like BAFTA. Golden Globes maybe because it televised on "regular TV." To most, the Academy Awards are THE AWARDS. Its a marketing thing, plain and simple.

The cover is also a marketing thing. You have to go with what people know and this is the poster that they know.

I am disappointed with the cover. I do understand the movie poster part but 3 academy awards on top really underscore BBM's accomplishment.

Maywe we will design our own DVD cover and just make it available for the members and replace the one from Focus Features.

Actually, the zoom just cuts of a bit on the left/right hand side...

My TV and DVD player have lots of different settings to "distort" the picture. But whichever zoom setting you choose, you're not seeing the picture the way Ang Lee intended...

I don't know how many of you that are from Scandinavia here, but anyway...  I contacted the Swedish distributor Sandrew Metronome (+46 8 762 1700), speaking to Helena Hertz and the release date in Sweden is set! It will be

July 12

(posted in another thread...) and then I brought up the DVD-cover thing. She is not hte one who makes the cover but when I explained to her how they did it in the US, with not much on the front etc, she said that's NOT going to happen here. I suggested they would have more of awards and viewers grades on the front and she said that's probably excatly how it will be. She said that some films have strict regulations on how the covers are to be done, but this movie haven't had any special strict guidelines around the marketing etc so... hopefully we in the Scandinavian countries will NOT have that US DVD-cover!

I agree that the USA  cover is a let-down, even if it is meant to sell to the general public; but the whole marketing for BBM has been to sanitize the love story: even in the book many of us have, the story to screenplay with essays by Ms. Proulx and Ossana, the photos in side don't even touch on the fact of two men in love!  One would think BBM is a buddy flick about two horseback ridin cowboys who are out to enjoy the scenery!

While I agree the box cover is rather blah, I'm not exactly going to be focusing on watching the cover.  Heck, they can cover it in a brown paper bag for all I care, as long as the DVD is inside and it gets here soon.

I know what you mean. The second time I saw it, the old couple sitting next to me was very upset, because they thought the movie was just about two cowboys being friends. They seemed confused if anything at the first tent scene, and walked out during the second one. I kinda felt bad for them. They didn't see it coming and everyone in the theater laughed when they walked out.

Yes, I experienced the same in the theater the 5th time I saw the film...some couples walked out after the second tent scene.....the whole marketing has been a catch-22: Focus Freatures of course wants the film to be seen by as many as possible, but in avoiding the hard core facts of the story, there is an injustice done to the integrity of the film, and many of the critics treated the film as a general love story for everyone!

Here's the Canadian cover. Its a little better imo than the U.S. version but still has put too much focus on the academy awards. Hopefully they put out a collectors edition without it.

My sentiments exactly Kindred. I don't care what's on the outside, that's for the marketing gurus to decide, just give me that DVD and soon!  The movie closed here last Saturday and I am in severe BBMW (Brokeback Mountain Withdrawal).

With all the press and talk about BBM, even before it was released, I find it amazing that some people went to the moive not having seen or heard anything about it.

I get an email from Amazon.com indicating that they are now accepting pre-orders. I don't like the design actually....sigh...I guess it is a beta, so I come here to check. But....the picture from amazon is correct and I really don't like the layout. I think I will buy the Canadian version since I am near the Toronto/Buffalo border.
