Without using headphones, without turning the volume up - I don't hear it  want the experience to be as close to natural as possible.
Maybe it's because I do not hear f..k used commonly, that it still has a minimal shock effect on me, and don't get that.  My family does not say it, my friends do not say it. my coworkers do not say it - so...
For the same reason, do not stop, reverse, ff or slo mo the film...
If something was to be noticed in the film, think that it would be evident at "normal" viewing conditions.

Some have questioned (not necessarily on this site), whether Jack moaned in pleasure or pain during FNIT. 

Oh. I think it was probably both... but more pleasure than pain, IMO.

I always thought it was more in surprise (after I finally heard it).  Kind of like hot d*mn that feels good.

Karen, I'm shocked!  You weren't paying attention to FNIT when it was playing?  Sacrilege!!!!  %(  But, I agree with you.  I didn't hear it at the theater, but I heard it first on Youtube then loud and clear on DVD viewing.  To me, it almost makes the scene more believable.  Who among us hasn't hollered out something you'd never say otherwise in the heat of passion?  :8  Jack and Ennis were sure in the throws of passion!  :^^)

 :) The first time I heard it was also during a time when I was not really looking at the TV... in fact I think I was cooking dinner (5th or 6th viewing) and I was actually in the kitchen. I was like "Holy sh*t! Did I hear that right?" I of course raced to the TV and backed it up to listen again!  :P

Oh, Jack says it. I hear it every time I watch the movie. It's kind of staggered. F**k...................me. and mumbled, but it's there. Same thing with the "I'm sorry" in SNIT.

Let me say this. One of the weakest parts of the movie and I think it is deliberate, is the sound. On my 3rd or 4th viewing of it in the theater, I'm just sitting there watching SNIT and all of a sudden I hear Ennis say, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry.", clear as a bell and then Jack says, "It's alright, it's alright." I wasn't looking to hear those words they were just there and to be honest I don't always hear them when I watch the DVD. The sound really sucks. But when I look away during that scene, I hear them.

Well I did'nt hear it during the pounding but I heard it just as they begin the thrusts (sorry kids!). It's just as  he's lowering his head to the floor of the tent and sort of turns to look back at Ennis from the side. Then the camera pans slowly up to Ennis. It's said softly but he definitly says it. He also says "shit " when he hears Ennis spit lube on his hand.  Anybody hear THIS? I hear "comon" twice too.You hear more with earphones on but I have a suggestion.
1. Turn TV up to max.
2. Lay earphones next to your head and ears and listen as if your a "vouyuer" in the "other room"Beleive it or not this works too. Hee Hee.+ it distracts you from the picture so that your more tuned in audibly.

I kept my eyes closed so I could put my fill concentration to the sound and that is how I heard it. I did not hear Jack say "shit", though. That will be my next task.  :s)

I agree.  The sound is intentionally muffled and even garbled in many parts.  Knowing the screenplay helps a bit, but not in the improvised portions.
