I haven't watched that scene very much because it is so painful. I watched it about 5 times tonight. I hear him say Jack.

Keep trying Keren - I didn't hear it to start with, but I do now. It's just after he brings the sleeve of the shirts up to his face - he breathes out and his lips move and you have to listen carefully to the breath....

It is a beautiful thing to hear. I hope you will hear it, not that it will change the story if you don't.

Me too Cham, It looks like his lips are brushing over the shirt and he sort of sighs but no matter how I try ( and God I want to hear the words) I can't hear him say anything.

I read your post and rre watchedthe movie and I HEARD IT!!!

It is not in AP's story, it does not show up in Subtitles and it is not in the screenplay. I think it was just Heath Ledger improvising. But HE WHISPERS "I Love You."

I am usually crying so hard at that point, that I didn't notice it for a long time.
Do now. Poor Ennis. Did he not realize until that moment how much he loved

It's a whisper as he's exhaling. I thought nothing could make that scene more heart-wrenching than it already was and then this did it. I also heard him say "Jack"- when he first takes the shirts out of the closet and as his hand goes to the chest of the shirt. Then he embraces the shirts... :\'(

I heard it! I've seen the movie 15 times, and I never heard that. Then, someone tells me to look, and I hear it! Dear GOD! Heath Ledger SHOULD have won best Actor! He's amazing!

Man, I was entirely skeptical. I even played it the first time and was like, nope. But then I tried again, and there it was. I mean, it's wicked muffled, but it sure fricken sounds like he's saying "I love you."

I didn't notice it the first time, but now that I listened for it, I heard it! It's clearly right there, he does move his lips as others have mentioned earlier. I love that it's (finally) said!

Could someone please remind me of the other two times the word "love" is said in the movie?

1. When Cassie confronts Ennis in the diner and says "Oh Ennis, girls don't fall in love with fun"
2. When Alma Jr goes to tell Ennis that her and Kurt are getting married and he asks "This Kurt - does he love you?" (She answers "Yes Daddy, he loves me" so I guess you could say it's said three times!)

I have to ask - do you think there's a point with having Ennis in the closet while saying "I love you"?

Lee seems to have been given us hints, clues and that kind of stuff in almost every part of this incredible film.. I don't know, I just came to think of it. Ennis does never come "out of the closet" and there, in the closet, he finally "says" that phrase - that certainly isn't needed. But just because it's said in the way it's said, it's so much more powerful.

I hope you were able to get anything out of this, I got all set up writing it.

Still haven't heard it. I hear something but it isn't "I love you" just sounds like breathing to me. I've watched and rewatched dozens upon dozens of times and still no dice. $:-\\$

Sorry, I kept listening but I never heard it, no matter headphones, volume on the stereo set at the max, whatever. Anyway, it doesn't seem logical for me for Ennis to say this and as you all know the dialogues are sticking to the short story, specially in that specific scene. For me it would be betraying Annie Proulx.

Cham - Heath doesn't say it OUT LOUD...he sort of whispers it on the exhalation, but if you listen carefully you can hear it. He holds the two shirts up to his face and inhales deeply then he whispers "I love you" on the exhale. I SWEAR I HEAR IT EVERY TIME NOW

Ok, you didn't hear it. In my opinion that is too bad, but, you seem to be happy with it. That's cool.

But I really resent people trying to make those of us who do hear it feel like we are defective or something. Nobody is asking you to buy anything. Either you do hear it or you don't...period.

Kristin, and anyone else interested, I have created a movie segment of where I believe Ennis says, "I love you."

You may download the segment from here: http://download.yousendit.com/AF74DE37698D8A39 .

I recommend you do the following:

1. use your favorite movie player.
2. set the volumn in your movie play to maximum.
3. if you use windows xp set the system volumn to maximum (this is not the same as your movie player)
4. set "auto replay" or "repeat" in your movie player.
5. click play.

If you have headphones for your computer, by all means use them, just be careful of your ears as the volumn is set to maximum.

The movie segment will play over and over until you stop it.

If you don't have a favorite movie player, I use Windows Media Player, you can click on the 'film strip" below and it will play on your screen but will not repeat. You will have to keep clicking play.

If you still can not hear "I love you" then I suggest you give it up. You never will.

I've just looked over the clip posted and now im probably torn 50/50. The first few watches I thought it was just the way the breathing came out but I can actually see how the 'i love you' would be interpreted - his lips also do move as if to speak. hhhhhmmmmmm............how interesting. I think it was done to not be obvious either way - that he does or doesn't say it. Personally, im still not convinced he says it but as metioned before we can all draw our own conclusions and bring those thoughts in when experiencing the movie.

Listened/watched countless times. I'm a bit more convinced than I was, but still not 100%. I find it easy to believe that this is the only way that Ennis could have ever said those words to anyone. Through utter heartbreak. So that makes this easier for me to see. The problem I'm still having is I'm just not hearing words come from his mouth. I see his lips move as if he's saying something, for sure. It is there, no doubt. I just cannot hear any audible words, but I guess that is the point, huh? I really wouldn't expect Ennis to shout it from the rooftops. So I'm going to say that it is there, I'm just too dang deaf to hear it. I'll keep listening though in hopes that one day I'll hear the words.
