Someone posted and verified on another board that Ennis actually says "I love you" while exhaling after he smells the shirts in Jack's bedroom! Did anyone hear it? I'll have to go check it out tonight when I get home

WOW (might have to turn on the subtitles just to be sure)

(This is an excerpt from the post:
Watched the movie again today and watched this part very closely (usually by this time Im crying so hard I dont hear anything). And oh my god your right Mmyers1615 after he takes the shirts from the cubby hole he holds them up to his nose and takes a big breath in and on the exhale he says "I love you" not only do you see his lips move you hear him say it but you have to listen closely because thats when the music starts up.
Just when I think I cant possibly cry anymore here I go again. )

Indeed, this would be interesting to verify. If he said it, it was probably so "under the voice", which makes it so wonderfully appropriate and moving.

OMG, guys he does say 'I love you' when he's holding the shirst on his hands and breathing very heavely... like a whisper that you barely could hear Ennis says 'I love you'! You will be able to hear that if you add all the volume to your tv or headphones, also repeat the scene because he said it in a faster way and very difficult to hear! :o :o :o

It won't appear in the subtitles because it's more like a whisper... also, ennis does move his lips... zoom in and you'll see for yourselfs! Wow, this new to me and I just found out for myself!

No he doesn't, I just watched and listened very carefully. My heart wanted to hear I Love You but he never said it.

You all know what this means... It would mean that the word 'love' is said precisely 3 times in the entire movie. If true, THIS is the one instance that matters most....

Me too Cham, It looks like his lips are brushing over the shirt and he sort of sighs but no matter how I try ( and God I want to hear the words) I can't hear him say anything.

I don't believe you guys, me here that I wasn't even born in this country understand very clear those words... Do what I did, at first I didn't get it and I was like... that person in forum was making lies about this whole scene, but than I repeated the scene like three times and it was there! I'm not lying, do what I did and you'll be able to hear that as well! ALSO ZOOM IN, ennis move his lips!!!

OH MY GAWD!! HE DOES!!!!!! Ennis does say "I LOVE YOU" I can't believe it!! I heard it 3 out of the 4 times I listened to it!!!! The first time I thought I just heard breath coming out, but no!! "I LOVE YOU!!! I can't stop crying!

Ennis is holding the shirts. When he picks up the sleeve he then takes in a deep breath. As he is exhailing he says, I LOVE YOU!!!!

I watched again... sorry no I Love You, my DVD player is pluged to my stereo, I had the volume at the max... no I Love You.

The same is confirmed by Pierrealex and Mars, they went to watch at the same time I went, same verdict.

This is just something Heath Ledger would do to. Add to the script and say it just loud enough to hear very faintly and not loud enough to make the movie mushy.

Will have to use headphones just to be sure! I know I'll be wrecked if it is actually there. It would give me some closure/satisfaction that Ennis did finally realize he really loved Jack to be able to mutter those words even if it was for just a quick fleeting whisper. :'(

Oh God, now I'm going to have to put in my DVD and watch it a third time just to look for this! I watched the second time with CC on the entire time, and I don't recall seeing any "I Love You's." As someone mentioned above, though, since it was just a faint whisper, it might not have even been captioned. Who knows.

I'll definitely have to watch for it, though. Through the whole movie, I kept waiting for them to profess their love to one another. They kept referring to their love as 'this thing' that grabs ahold of them, but they never once said to one another they they loved each other, and I wanted to hear it SO bad! So, I'll have to check it out.

Never watch closed captioning or subtitles. They are not accurate. Watch his lips and listen, full blast and amplified more if possible. It's official! I listened to it with headphones turned up, and HE DOES WHISPER "I LOVE YOU" while exhaling - it is very brief and quick and his mouth is partially hidden by the shirt so you can only see his mouth move if you look closely. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

Ennis says what I have long to hear him say.

It's quick, muffled, and whispered. But he does say it. Amazing!
