the last postcard
« on: Apr 19, 2006, 05:04 PM »
I was just wondering what others thought of the last post card that Ennis sends to Jack..wanting to meet up again in November..after they had that fight..I am thinking that this was Ennis way of reaching out to Jack and wanting to meet up again and hopefully work things out..maybe he is saying look I care about you, I don't want to loose your love or your compasionship..maybe we can try again and work out or differences..or was Ennis trying to say I want to meet up with you again and continue what we have been doing for the past 20 years..its something that has been bugging me alot..I hope its Ennis way of trying to make up with Jack and work something that will be make them both sastified and happy.. Do you think when Ennis wrote this postcard he realized that he loved Jack beyond anything he has ever known and was willing to do what he could to make the relationship work...what do you guys think

Let's get try to answer for once !! lol

I'm sorry, but I don't know, I think (in my opinion) when Ennis wrote the last postcard, like you said, he was thinking  "I want to meet up with you again and continue what we have been doing for the past 20 years..."
I know, it's depressing, but until Jack's death, Ennis doesn't "get" all this, I mean;  the meaning of their last meeting, his truly feeling, his "luck" to "have" Jack.

And of course, I wish  I can think in a other way and "I care about you, I don't want to loose your love or your compasionship..maybe we can try again and work out or differences..or was Ennis trying to say I want to meet up with you again and continue what we have been doing for the past 20 years."
I really wish.

Yes I do.

I don't think that would have ever happened.

I always watch that scene and tried to put in his shoes and understand at least what he was doing or thinking in that time. one thing for sure was the he really wanted to see Jack again, and i truly believe he wanted to fix this since Jack was the one leading the meetings this time it was him trying to get some of jack attention. he wanted to know if jack was still upset or not in that way he could have an idea if that "thing" they have was going to continue. We know that Ennis moves slow i wondered how much time it took for him to send the postcard. Ennis is not good at talking and we don't have to mention writing. he must have tried to find the most polite words to not hurt jack.

i don't think he was aware that the "thing" was love until jack died  :'( :'( :'( so sad to realize too late.

But the problem is that Ennis was so in his own fears to realize that he was loosing Jack and he killed in a certain way the jack he fell in love with in brokeback creating the jack that was more bitter and frustrated by not having Ennis

i think i go away from the topic a little bit and at the same time my coworker is looking me with a weird face since i'm crying  :'( :'(

Tengo sido decirles exactamente lo que usted ahora acaba de decir por meses. Gracias.

Plus, when you have the words of the director and screenplay writer, you can't go wrong!  So, I believe we have you, possibly dirtbiker, and me who agree.

"So the story follows their lives in the curse of 20 years. When one character realizes he had a taste of love it is too late.  He missed it because the other character dies."
 -           Ang Lee, in an interview with Charlie Rose, December 2005

Diana Ossana: "And then he goes up to Jack’s room and he finds his old shirt hanging tucked inside Jack’s, and he realizes how much that man loved him—how deeply he loved him from the get-go.

Maybe Jack usually got in touch with Ennis before their trips...no mention is ever made of them communicating between their times together except for the time Ennis let Jack know about the divorce.  Yet it seems to me there had to be some sort of communication to set up times and places to meet, don't you think?  SO maybe it was Jack usually contacting Ennis, but he didn't this time because he was dead.  So when Ennis didn't hear from him, he sent Jack a postcard.  What do y'all think?

Donna i don't quite agree with you, we know that Jack didn't like at all the idea of November and he even show up to Ennis that in their last trip in Ennis mind he may have though that he need to talk with jack he send that post card to "test the waters" and see if jack would agree to that.

thanks for shedding some light on this for me..it was something that was bothering me..I couldn't quite understand..I am thinking he was trying to see if he could see Jack again and maybe see if things could work but as we know that never happend..I think he realized he how much Jack loved him with the shirts..and seeing that scene breaks my heart..when Ennis realizes that love he had and could have was after Jack died..so sad  :'( :'(..thanks for helping me clear this up..Maybe Jack didn't get the postcard..maybe he died before he could read it..so maybe after Jack was killed the postcard was stamped and sent back to Ennis..his last attempt to reach out unfortnally didn't work..if my thinking is correct and Jack didn't see the postcard..or he did see the postcard but never had the chance to respond back because he was murdered.
I do appreciate you guys answering..thanks..:) its helping me sort this out..

Well, in my case I agree with you donnaread.
Although here we're just guessing, it's probable that it was Jack always the one to set up their meetings. As their last meeting ended up with the bitter and sad quarrel we all know :'( :'(, as you suggest, Ennis may have thought Jack was still mad at him or, at least, at the idea of meeting in November. That's why he wrote the postcard.
