oh god, I recall there being a topic on imdb about the number of ennis' 'huh's :D I reckon there where more than 20 ( can't remember ). but I agree, it's funny :D and souch a great touch, I mean, so 'in character'- kudos to ledger :D

I'm sure Heath picked up the "huh" thing when he was studying his accent for Ennis.  Probably when they were all hanging around the locale and people, maybe he heard some guy or guys do that and decided to use it.  I love it myself.  I love his mumbling, and I never had any trouble understanding.  It does seem that the majority of the "huh's" are in stressful situations, so it's like a kind of nervous tic he developed for Ennis?

Ennis's "huh"s often seem to me to be semi-aggressive and challenging - he uses them instead of some proper sentence like "What do you mean?" " Or why should I?" or whatever. Ennis isn't one to waste words - I always think of him as hoarding them like a miser, and "Huh" is the least he can get away with. It also has the advantage of catching the other person off-guard - how do they know how to respond?

The scene up on BBM right after Jack flicks his belt buckle (and makes that cute little noise), Ennis says:  "What's the point of riding a piece of stock for 8 seconds, HUH?"

My last night's viewing, I counted 15 -- but I'm sure that's not definitive.  I've never watched the DVD with subtitles on -- do they write out the huh?   :c)

is it just me, or do Ennis'  "huhs" vary depending on how he feels.

So far Ive come across three examples of different sounding "huhs":

1. The confused "huh"- Ennis uses this one when talking to Jack. Best example would be, "But that snow barely struck an hour..huh."

2. The accusatory/mad "huh"- Ennis uses this one again in the company of Mr. Twist. Prime example would be, "You been to Mexico Jack Twist...huh?"

This one sounds a more more deliberate than the first one and spiteful. It also has a lower tone to it.

3. The happy  "huh"- A very rare one that Ennis uses with Alma Jr. "My little girl is getting married....huuuh."

This one is definetly longer than the others and has a higher pitch towards the end.


Just thought Id share my thoughs on the wonderful world of Ennis talk!

The above remark by tpe is interesting because I watched an interview with Heath wherein he said that he tried to change Ennis's voice to show the changes that Ennis went through.  In the begginning, when Ennis & Jack were together on the mountain, his voice was higher-pitched and had more optimism.  As he aged, and became more and more defeated, his voice got lower and lower and more resigned.  So maybe his "happy-huh" in response to Jr's getting married meant that he really was happy for her and that he found some joy in his otherwise bleak existence?  I certainly hope so!!

I think often when Ennis says "Huh?" he just wants affirmation of whatever he said.  Like some poeple say "ain't it?" at the end of a statement, or "Right?"  It's just a way to see if the person you're talking with is on the same wavelength as you.  At other times, I think it means he really is confused about what answer he shouldmake -- the repercussions of his answers.  By saying"Huh?" he can buy some time to think or just put the issue under the carpet, so to speak.  Then, sometimes, I think it's just Heath's way of being Ennis. It's distinctly Ennis.  Nobody else says it, so it helps establish the Ennisness of Ennis.

Gave me an excuse to watch it again, anyway - am up to the final scene by the lake and have counted twelve "huh"'s so far, with a variety of apparent meanings. Will finish counting when I watch the rest - I was goin g to look jst at the Ennis scenes but how possible would it be for me to miss the scenes with Jack alone? Im-possible, thta's how possible.

Ennis has a repertoire of little noises - "mm" and " a sort of stifled " thank you " as well.

I love this subject, TD.  It's one of the first things I noticed and loved about Ennis in the movie, his "huh's," and I'm glad you pointed out the different intonations, etc.

And here's another almost-"huh."  I consider it definitely a "huh," although he actually says it "hmm?" because he's so relaxed and happy.  It's in the dozy embrace.  "You're sleepin' on your feet like a horse, hmm?"

Oh, I love that muffled "thank you" he does right then.  He also does little muffled words of some sort when he asks Jack for his lighter in the bar in Signal in the beginning.

I think these were brilliant touches of Heath's to create this character; and besides his voice coach for this film, I would think he hung out and listened to people in the area, when they were going around Wyoming, yes?

I'm not as creative as some here, and I'm sure you can come up with more/better ones.  Including all the various huh's.

My mom use to have a boyfriend who Ennis reminds me off. They both talked a little 'ignorant.' And he used to say 'huh?' ALOT too. This guy was below the average intelligence, though I love Ennis, we know he isn't as well educated as he had liked to have been.
