Ennis isn't just reluctant to speak - he also seems to use all these npoises as a sort of alternative language, maybe to prevent himself from having to have too much contact with others but at the same time maintaining enough contact not to appear rude. the more I think about these noises, the more interesting they seem - an Ennis defense mechanism, sort of portcullis.

I can just feel his discomfort in "social" situations, ever since he was a young(er) man, tossed out in the world on his own with few skills and that certain amount of fear, and not being a naturally outgoing guy like Jack is, so he had to learn to do as little as necessary so that people would at least allow him into their world, so he could get work, at least.  Somehow he met a girl and got close to her, though.  I wonder how that happened.  I don't picture him going to church and meeting her that way.  And I wonder what jobs he had before Brokeback?  Three or four years since he had left high school.  Does the SS say?

The ss says that when the truck broke down he went straight into ranch work, I assume wherever his brother was, and they all stuck together till his sister got married and moved to Casper. According to the ss the brother is still in Signal, which makes it odd that Ennis arrives there in the movie. Actually the ss seems more logical - Ennis would have got a job from someone in Signal if he lived there - then I wonder how he met Alma, who was presumably from riverfton, though that's only what the screenplay says. It's hopeless trying to match up the two - you can't.

Well Kathy, I figure that because Jack never had a father to teach him the man language, or a brother for that matter, he never learned it. But he learned to communicate with men in another way...the universal language.

I'm late coming to this thread, but it's been interesting to read all the posts.

Decoding Ennis......I love that...although that man is so complex and deep that I doubt anyone will ever be able to.  But it's fun trying. 

What about the "huh" Ennis mutters during his wait for Jack after 4 years....Alma says "maybe we could get a babysitter, take your friend to the knife and fork"......Ennis, mind most definitely on other matters, can only manage a grunted "huh" in reply, which to me, says "god, Alma, I'd forgotten you were there, I'm so nervous and excited about seeing Jack.  There's no damn way I'll be sharing Jack with anyone tonight, least of all you."

Anyway,two huh's that I love are the morning after the storm, when all the sheep are mixed up "what are supposed to do now,huh?", which is like "I told you this would happen if I didn't get back to the sheep, didn't I? You were right I would've got thrown off the horse if I'd tried, and yes,it was a great excuse to have some fun keeping warm in the tent, but I'm still going to let you do all the hard work sorting out the sheep, while I just sit on the horse and shout out orders!"  
The other one is the post-divorce scene, "what are you doing here,huh?" where Ennis is trying to play it cool, like Jack turning up on his doorstep happened every day, but his heart must have been jumping all over the place,not only just seeing Jack,but wondering why he was there, was something wrong, and then seeing him get out of the truck smiling from ear to ear, looking so happy and gorgeous Ennnis probably was wanting to plant another reunion kiss on him, but having to restrain himself cause the girls were there, but still couldn't help hugging him and holding him tight ...before sending him straight back again, without even a kiss, or a coffee :\'(

I quite like the first one - "What if Aguirre finds out, huh?" - Ennis challenging Jack and implying he's wrong, which he doesn't often do. At this point he's also feeling guilty - it's his being thrown that's resulted in "this food situation" and Jack's threat to shoot the sheep.

Too funny, CrimsonSky -- your undunno's.  It does sound pretty dumb unless one knows why you're doing it.  And we certainly don't want to use Ennis-speak where our children would emulate. 

And good huh's.  I haven't thought about these ones in a while.  In fact, I don't know that I've properly heard the one in the post-divorce scene when Jack comes.  Oh boy -- must do research with the DVD.  Thanks.  Oh, but that scene is so poignant.  Jack is so happy, but Ennis is held back...and then the sad ending to it.  I want to smack Ennis for not having Jack in for at least a little while.
