I don't know what the official name for them is Rosie but I call them emoticons, for emotion icons.

Unfortunately I don't use them enough.  A dangerous thing when people can not see your face to judge your emotions.  Especially for people like me who have a very dry sense of humor.

Damn women! Turning our rough and tumble cowboys into silk and satin wearing pansies.   :8

Real men wore ugly old pajama bottoms in the winter.   :8

You bet, P1.  I happen to think Ennis looks hot in both of his PJ's.  Purtier than Alma in her nightie.

Not that I mind the pansy stuff at all, though.

I got ya, P1, emoticon or not.  I'm pretty sure we've got your number by now.  ;)

I love the emoticons too!  Never fail to cheer me up.   (^)

Real men still do wear ugly PJs.

But some of us are into metrosexuals with their exquisite taste.

Actually some of us   >:D >:D  >:D  are just having a few satisfying little fantasies, brought on by the sight of Ennis's (tasteless) PJ bottoms.   &**)

I'm surprised that with all the speculation about this scene, nobody mentioned the obvoius reason he'd be wearing pajamas... it was COLD in the house!  Many people on a limited income turn their heat way down, especially at night,

Well in the late sixties nobody went cold and nobody turned their thermostats down. Energy was not an issue and it was so cheap that houses were all kept warm. Conservation didn't occur 'til after 1973 with the Arab oil embargo. Even somebody broke had heat, food, and medical coverage.

Quote
Pajamas were commonly worn in the 1960s.

Correct, Me and my brothers always wore pajammas 100% of the time. You could count on getting them for Christmas. When I was 13 (due to hero worship), I copied my older cousin Steve who slept in Jockey shorts. When my mom discovered this she hit the ceiling. I can still hear her tirade of what a dirty habit it was to sleep in shorts.

One thing I didn't see mentioned in this thread, Ennis and Alma had two little girls, and Alma Jr. was walking.   While Ennis might walk around naked or in undershorts around Alma Sr. I doubt he'd do it in front of the girls...and toddlers  have a habit of just appearing when least expected
[they were] both high school dropout country boys with no prospects, brought up to hard work and privation, both rough-mannered, rough-spoken, inured to the stoic life.

True; i also think the whole middle-class walking round naked thing wouldn't have permeated to rural areas anyway. And if you're as badly off as Ennis and Alma are meant to be, you just wear whatever you have, don't go dashing out for this season's trend.

This is true WW, We all know these cuties would look good in potato sacks, but in the rural 60's the culture was set to a certain standard that did'nt include the sexy hype that we see today. These jammys were the norm back then ...... In the meantime I'll keep having daydreams about night things and two cowboys.

I'm sure Ennis didn't choose those pajamas.  Alma bought them for him, as all good wives used to buy their man's underwear, etc.  She may have even bought them at the Goodwill.  That's where we bought lots of clothes when I was growing up --- and we were not destitute.  Poor people have poor ways, you know.  I KNOW they didn't run aro0und the house naked in Wyoming!!!!!

I don't know why, but they just looked like the kind of pajamas a woman would buy for her husband.

I can't see Ennis buying those.

You are probably right.  Ennis would probably dispense with the comfort of a pajama...

Yes, but when were movies ever realistic? I don't see him dressed in anything this "pretty-pretty" either. In fact I now have a firmly-imprinted image of alma coming home with these, Ennis opening the bag they're in and saying "Huh," in a disbelieving sort of way!

Oh boy, the pajama thread.  I enjoy the butt crack shot, but I can't find that right now.

Also, this is what they made then, cheap, and this is what Alma (probably) would have bought.  I remember my Dad's old-man boxers (not the hip boxers of today), and they were in all these crazy patterns.  Maybe she couldn't find any classier ones and didn't think it mattered.

Well, the English equivalent at the time would have been stripy brushed cotton in deadly combinations of washed-out blue, grey, beige, greige, bleige, whatever - dull, dull, dull. Oh, and we don't have butt cracks, as far as I know. We have builder's bum instead....

I haven't slept in anything other than my skin since college. When Ennis came into the room with those jammies on I thought I was gonna puke!  (^)
There was some open space between what he knew and what he tried to believe, but nothing could be done about it, and if you can't fix it you've got to stand it.

Ennis, riding against the wind back to the sheep in the treacherous, drunken darken light, thought he'd never had such a good time, felt he could paw the white out of the moon.

I'm with you, Kristin, I love Ennis's PJ's, so-called ugly print or not.  I like that look -- nice, soft cotton elastic waist PJ bottoms, either with no shirt, or an undershirt like his.  And my focus was totally where it was supposed to be from the first time I saw that shot.

LOL, WW and aintfoolin, re our sorely lacking education.  Reading, writing and posterior anatomy.

I like the look as well. I've seen far uglier PJs out there, but then again maybe I am looking at them through rose colored glasses because Ennis is in them? Heh.

One thing i was just thinking about though. I don't think Jack could have pulled off the whole pattern PJ look. Jack strikes me as more of a tee-shirt and boxers kind of sleeper. Ennis has that perfect amount of lankiness to pull off the dorky PJ look. Okay I may have just analyzed PJ vs. body types too much there... ^*()
