Brokeback brings culture war to Eaton Rapids

When Julianne Geiger and her husband bought Video Vault in Eaton Rapids in 2003, the first thing to go was the porno section.

The second thing was “Boat Trip,” a comedy starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Horatio Sanz as accidental tourists on a gay cruise liner. Geiger pulled it not because it was woefully unfunny and sure to be a non-renter, but because of its gay content. Also yanked were “The Birdcage,” “Philadelphia” and “In & Out.” This month, “Brokeback Mountain” was added to that list.

“If a movie idealizes homosexuality, I’ll pull it,” she says. Geiger, a non-denominational Christian, says that her religion takes a “very clear-cut” stance on homosexuality: It’s a big no-no.

Her beliefs have convinced her to pull dozens of other titles from the shelves of Video Vault, 916 S. Main St., some of which don’t necessarily have gay themes, such as “The Aristocrats,” which humorizes, among other mortal sins, incest and bestiality.

Earlier this month, controversy bloomed anew over “Brokeback Mountain” when the Bahamas Plays and Films Control Board banned the film from the island chain country. Curiously, they claim it was not for its homosexual content but for what they see as a promotion of bisexuality.

While geographic isolation gives Bahamians virtually no way to see “Brokeback,” Eaton Rapids residents have at least two other options: Felpausch Video Time, 1415 S. Main St., and the Movie Market, 115 S. Main St.

Norine Moore, who manages Felpausch Video Time, says she carries seven or eight copies of “Brokeback Mountain” and hasn’t heard a peep about the mini-flack one way or the other.
“I was amazed to find out [Video Vault] wasn’t carrying it,” Moore says. “I think they pushed a lot of business this way because of it.” She says she watched “Brokeback Mountain” with her two teenage daughters — but couldn’t talk her husband into it — and had an uncommon reaction.

“I was mad at the one guy (Jack Twist, Jake Gyllenhaal’s character) for dragging the other guy (Ennis Delmar, Heath Ledger’s character) into that lifestyle,” she says. “But both my daughters thought it was sad.”

“We carry pretty much everything,” says Krista, who works up the street at Movie Market. “We’re not prejudiced.”

Krista, who declined to give her last name, says that “Brokeback” has been a popular renter since its release on April 4, and none of her customers have objected to its gay themes.

“Most people who have seen it said it was tasteful,” she says. “I just thought the scenery was pretty.”

According to the U.S Census Bureau, in 2000 (the most current year for which information is available) Eaton Rapids has a population of 5,330, with 96 percent of that being white. The median age is 33. 7, nearly three years younger than the national average, and in the last presidential election Eaton County was almost evenly split, with the slight edge going to Bush.
Thom Norris fits quite neatly into the town’s demographic of young, white and fiscally conservative, but he takes exceptional umbrage with Geiger’s decision.

“I’m not openly gay,” Norris says, “But I’m not exactly in the closet either. This censorship, this caveman mentality, is not what this city is about.”

Norris, who runs the oil change center located next door to Video Vault (and sits on the Eaton Rapids City Council), is angry at his neighbor’s decision to not carry the movie.

“This is not Salt Lake City, Utah,” Norris says, referring to Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller’s decision not to run the movie at his megaplex theater. “This is not Mormon headquarters. This is Michigan. This is 2006. I’m offended by this. We have gone leaps and bounds to move this community into the next century, and businesses like [Video Vault] are trying to hold us back.”
Jim, 67, who wouldn’t give his last name, says that he supports Video Vault’s decision not to carry the movie, saying it’s “not the kind of thing you want to shove down people’s throats.”
“I’m an old guy who grew up in an era when homosexuals were all queers,” he says, watering his lawn half a mile away from town. “I’ve known some homosexuals over the years — I don’t need to see a movie about them. I feel bad for people afflicted by it.”

Geiger says Video Vault offers free rentals of religious-themed DVDs, including the “Veggie Tales” series, “The Gospel of John” and “The Passion of the Christ,” one of the bloodiest odes to God ever put to film.

Geiger says she doesn’t have the same conviction over violent movies as she does gay/lesbian-themed films. Indeed, a poster promoting “Hostel” hangs in the window behind her, a film teeming with graphic depictions of torture and murder, not to mention a gay sex scene more risqué than the one in “Brokeback.”

Geiger admits some people were disgruntled initially at her decision not to carry “Brokeback Mountain,” but the hubbub died down after the first few days.

“But I do have families who have told me they’re glad that they didn’t have to explain to their kids why they couldn’t watch it,” she says.

Geiger says she pulls movies if a renter tells her that the movie has objectionable content, but when asked about other gay/lesbian-themed currently available on her shelves — including “Rent,” “The Hours,” “Interview with the Vampire” and “The Rules of Attraction” — Geiger raises her eyebrows and makes a quick list of them. Video Vault’s collection just got a little smaller.

Laughable.  But make no mistake about it.  These people are real, and there are many of them out there.

The hypocrisy that religion seems to espouse is so plain for everyone to see.  I hope that these hypocrites and bigots will have a taste of their own medicine one of these days before their demise, if we're lucky enough.

Brothers, sisters and friends,

I certainly do not wish to start an argument here but I just do not understand your attitudes.  Two people, the Geigers, purchased a video rental store.  Because of their Christian beliefs they have chosen not to carry certain types of films.  Where is the problem in that?  Don't they have that right?  Do we want a law that forces them to carry those films we want them to carry?  Gosh!  I certainly hope not. This country was founded on liberty. Liberty is the right to do anything you want to do so long as it does not interfer with the rights of anyone else.  We have no right to go into the Geiger's store and rent what we want to rent. The store belongs to them. If they feel that their religion tells them homosexuality is wrong, well, okay, do not carry films with a gay theme.  Do not let gay people into your church. And, for heaven sake never engage in an homosexual act! That is their right to do.  What they have no right doing is to try to legislate other peoples rights.  I didn't read they were trying to do that.  I didn't read where they were trying to get the city council to pass a law banning all gay material from the other stores.  In fact, from what I read, it seems the Geiger's have lost business.  That, too, is their right. It is their business to do as they please.

Sometimes we get so worked up over not being allowed to live our life in liberty that we simply want to take other people's liberties away from them and force them to do what we want them to do.  That is no more right than them telling us what we can and can't do.

If we want to live freely then we have to also offer the ignorant their freedoms also.  Eventually, there will be so many enlightened people around that will not support these businesses that they will come around.  But we can not force them to do so.  We can only love them as we wish to be loved and hope they will see the light as so many have already.

Tolerance goes both ways.

Tell you what...truth is, sometimes I miss you so much I can hardly stand it...

Patriot1 I stand by you, thank you for posting this.

I agree, though I must admit having a video banned because of its gay content is just weird.

What i dont understand is why people who ban Brokeback Mountain and other gay movies, why do they have no problem showing movies that "promote" violence, drugs, promiscuity, murder, and so on, aren't these even greater evils?.. Those seem fine.. hmm, just a thought.

But I agree, tolerance goes both ways.

Well, I wouldn't ask them if I were you.  I don't think they could give you a reasonable answer anyway.  They are too ignorant.

Well said Patriot1. These folks will dig their own hole and rot in their own hell. We certainly don't need to lower ourselves to their level. They are to be pitied, not reviled.

According to the Bible, "hell," is a place of the dead. Bad people don't end up in "hell" after the Last Judgment; they end up in the Lake of Fire to burn forever. At the time of the last Judgment, "Hell" and death are cast into the Lake of Fire.

Following my late Pentecostal mother's advice, I never saw Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ." She  told me not to watch it because there was too much violence in it and I am a victim of violence, too.

I think the main reason that Gibson made the movie was to make a whole lot of money off of the right-wing "Christian" fundamentalists.

I found it interesting that those preachers, church denominational leaders who promoted the movie never saw the TV comedy series, "Savages," which was produced by Mel Gibson. Gibson was always shown in a TV public service announcement spot during the program as a motorcycle cop. Usually a girl in tight-fitting clothes or almost no clothes at all was in the "segment" and she either got hurt or killed while Gibson's character was talking.

Gibson's "Passion" was not based on the Bible the fundamentalists use; it was based on the writings of a Roman Catholic Nun.

They have the right, indeed.  That does not mean that they are in the right.  God will judge them according to His just deserts.

Indeed, tolerance goes both ways.  But you cannot stand by idly when they are ready to light the fires.  There is no sense talking about tolerance as a 2-way street if one side is already negated by default.

Tolerance presupposes the existence of two sides that strive to find common ground.

Yes, they certainly have the right, but as tpe said, it doesnt mean that it's right.  We can all do our part by not patronizing such businesses.  I certainly wouldn't want to support a business, say, if they arbitrarily remove movies depicting interracial relationships, for example (however ludicrious it sounds) - after all this was thought to be wrong not too many moons ago.  I simply do not tolerate bigotry.  If we allow tolerance for such behavior, it only perpetuates it and empowers the perpetrators.  We have to show our outrage my friends...  Apathy will be our demise.

I don't see that anyone is negated.  The U.S. Congress is more than 51% conservative.  If they wanted to do it they could pass all kinds of anti-gay laws.  They haven't.  And I doubt they will.  But, we can't sit on our hands either.  We have to write to our Congressman and tell them how we feel.  In this country we have laws and we need to work within those laws.  The only alternative is to start a war.  Wars kill people and I am afraid they would win.

Quote from: tpe

Tolerance is two sides leaving each other alone when they disagree.  We do not believe as they do and the other way around.  As long as they do nothing to try to pass laws against me, I will leave them alone to believe as they wish.  I do not care if the like me or what I do, or who I live with.  They don't feed me and they don't screw me either.

Yes, they certainly have the right, but as tpe said, it doesnt mean that it's right.

I don't think you heard me say it was right.  Did you?  But what is the alternative...kill them?  Burn down their businesses? Their homes?  Or, become good and productive citizens and show them we are worth something. Show them we are just like they are except in the bedroom.

Absolutely, never patronize any business that is against what you stand for.  To do so is stupid plain and simple.  Why feed your enemy with your own money? Put them out of business if you are able to do so.  That is exactly what I said.  But know this, they have the right to run their business as they see fit. they own it and it belongs to them, not us. Or, would you prefer that the government take over all businesses and run them its way? Do you want to give government that much power?  I don't.  We have too much socialism in this country now.

Quote from: dirtbiker
I simply do not tolerate bigotry.

And what do you do about it?  It exists today.  Forty-one years ago we passed civil rights legislation in this country.  There are still bigots. There will always be bigots. Nothing you can do about it except kill them off.  Is that what you propose?

Quote from: dirtbiker
If we allow tolerance for such behavior, it only perpetuates it and empowers the perpetrators.  We have to show our outrage my friends...  Apathy will be our demise.

You are wrong. Nobody is killing off the racial bigots except time. Young people are much more tolerant than their parents were.  Someday, definitely not tomorrow, there will be just a handful of bigots left.  And nobody is proclaiming apathy.  There are many ways to hurt bigots who own businesses.  Those that don't, you will do nothing about them.

When I first came to San Diego there was the "gay" community of Hillcrest.  One day the businessmen and citizens of Hillcrest all got together and decided they were going to have the best area in San Diego.  Buildings were repaired and painted.  Streets were cleaned and kept that way.  The community invited nice gay friendly shops to move into the neighborhood.  Today, it is such a nice area the yuppies are moving in.  Businesses are flourishing.  And this is happening all over the place in this country.  Civic leaders are learning from gay people.  Gay people are slowly becoming civic leaders.  San Diego has a gay congresswoman. But it takes time. We just have to stop the bigots from passing new laws against us.  How many internet organizations do you belong to that work for causes that you believe in?  I am not talking about organizations where you have to pay to be a member either.  How many liberals (gay liberals even) don't even think it is worth while to vote? The last election was so close if every liberal voted we would have a landslide for the liberal party.  So, when things don't go our way, don't blame the conservatives for getting more people to vote, blame the liberals who don't vote.  We live in a country of laws.  Laws are made by people. People are voted for by citizens.  You don't vote, you don't get to make the laws that help gay people.

No, no apathy, get off your asses and get out there and work for what you all want so badly.  If you don't, nobody is going to hand it to you on a silver plater.  But as long as the bigots don't try to hurt you, leave them alone, they will die out soon enough.  More and more companies in this country are giving spousal benefits to their employees. Work to support that.  Write letters and find out which companies do not.  Stop buying their product until they do.  If there is one thing we have in this country it is a multitude of choices.  When I go into the supermarket I can choose between 4 different cans of beans (just a little BBM humor).  I will buy the one who does have benefits equal for all employees.  If there are more than one that do, I will buy the one I am looking for either by price (usually) or quality.  That is the way the free market works.

So, if these people want to remove all gay themed films, that is their business, literally.  Don't go to them.  You have no special right to use their business.  But show them they made a big mistake with their bigotry by not giving them your money and hopefully they will go out of business.

If they leave me alone I will leave them alone.  They want a fight, I will fight.

This is pragmatic enough.  I accept this.

This is true, but with people who blindly believe that Christian Scripture condemns Homosexuality outright as an abomination, I don't think there will ever be no question in their minds as to exterminating this 'deviant' lifestyle outright.  If the U.S. Congress were more than 71% Christian conservative rather than 51%, I find it very probable that we shall see see more dramatic displays of homophobia.

Again, this is pragmatically acceptable to me.  Although, to be honest Patruiot1, I do not think that they would stop there if they held undisputed sway over all 3 branches of government.  And they are trying...

Patriot1, I do not think there are fundamental differences here between the two of us, or with dirtbiker or with the majority of other members in this forum.  After all, I do think we are a rational people who see things as not black and white.

However, I seriously doubt that this is the case with people such as these under discussion.  They do it now to their store because they can do it.  They will do it to the school systems if they get the opportunity.  They will do it to government if the opening presents itself.  I have seen gay family members subjected to closet 'mental institutions' and other forms of quaint gay 'cures' only because parents claimed the moral authority over their gay chirldren under their system to do so, and their congregations acquiesced accordingly.

You are right to say that, above all, we must be vigilant.  And we must act in accordance to what they do either for or against us.

But with such people, I personally see very little hope of tolerance for other lifestyles that they consider diametrically opposite their system of belief/morality.

Thank you for taking the time to explore this issue intelligently and with restraint.
