hands and lips
« on: May 04, 2006, 10:09 PM »
Rewatching the DVD again today, and focusing on certain key scenes, I found myself thinking about the moments when we see passion spark between Ennis and Jack.  It probably sounds overly obvious to point it out, but their passion ignites--literally--when they use hands and lips to express themselves.  It's not always kisses and caresses, either; they also punch one another, fumble with their words, sigh, work, carry their hats, moisten their lips (thanks to the Jakelickers for pointing that out!), etc., etc.  They may get little time together--but these moments of contact are supersaturated.

Favorite moments with lips and hands?  Here are some of mine:

*They shake hands outside Aguirre's trailer
*They drink whiskey from the same bottle after Ennis falls off his horse--and just before FNIT
*Jack looks up at Ennis when he's lying on the mountain
*Jack finally kisses Ennis full-on during SNIT--and then shuts his eyes briefly to drink it in
*Ennis holds Jack's arm to his chest when they're lying in the hotel bed
*Jack caresses the side of Ennis's face while they're camping
*Ennis holds Jack while they're sleeping in a later tent scene

I could go on and on . . . . ;)

Ooooo ... I like this thread.  ;D

- Ennis holding Jack for behind and gently rubbing his jacket in the flashback scene.
- Every time they kiss.
- Jack holding Ennis in the motel scene (makes me melt)

there are many scenes I like :)

When they first kiss in the second tent scene..its beautiful
when Ennis comes to Jack at the second scene and Jack lightly touches his face...its so nice
right before the first tent scene when  Jack tries to cuddle up to Ennis
When Ennis comes up to Jack in the flash back scene and hugs him
the reunion kiss  :-* the whole scene is great
the motel scene when there holding each other

I love the subtle looks they give to each other at Aguirre's trailer at the very beginning.
The way Ennis rubs his forehead against Jack's face at the end of the reunion kiss
And most of all th way Ennis hugs Jack at the flashback scene and how Jack realxes and lets his head lay at Ennis' arm...OMG

Here, here!  Those lips and hand moments keep me up at night!   After the divorce scene, when Jack drives up to see Ennis, Jack jumps out of the car, embraces Ennis, and then Jack puts his hand around Ennis' neck to draw him in for a kiss.  Love the look on Jack's face there; so hopeful and happy.  Of course, the girls are there, and Ennis send Jack away.   ???  But you can see Jack's tongue action all throughout the scene.  He's so disappointed.  Jack's tongue is almost like a prop in this scene; it seems to have a life of it's own!   ;D

The way Ennis rubs his forehead against Jack's face at the end of the reunion kiss

Oh god, yeah - that is my absolute favourite bit of the movie. I mean, the kiss itself is incredible but when Ennis puts his hand on Jack's face and then does that little nuzzle thing I just melt. So so beautiful.

Another "hands and lips" moment - when Jack turns his face into Ennis's hair when he's speaking to him in the motel scene. It's such an intimate thing to do and you can imagine how Ennis must have had a shiver running right down his spine as he felt Jack's breath on the side of his face. I'm feeling like that just thinking about it.

OMG, that's perfect.  That's one of the scenes in this movie that makes me actually feel shaky inside when I watch it--no matter how many times.  I cannot believe the beauty of their love for each other.

I also love this passage from the short story, which just highlights lips and hands like crazy:

"They seized each other by the shoulders, hugged mightily, squeezing the breath out of each other, saying, son of a bitch, son of a bitch, then, and easily as the right key turns the lock tumblers, their mouths came together and hard, Jack's big teeth bringing blood, his hat falling to the floor, stubble rasping, wet saliva welling . . . and still they clinched, pressing chest and groin and thigh and leg together, treading on each other's toes until they pulled apart to breathe and Ennis, not big on endearments, said what he said to his horses and daughters, little darlin."  And later on: "[Jack's] shaking hand grazed Ennis's hand, electrical current snapped between them."

And--lest I forget--their brief fight on BBM just before coming down, when Jack elbows Ennis, making his nose bleed, and then holds and tries to comfort him before Ennis punches him on the side of the face.  This difficult combination of tenderness and violence--wow.

My fav part of the short story ( OT but in norwegian short story is called novelle, like novel, and novel is called roman) I hadn't thought about the hand parts....

Shieldmaid, thank you so much for starting this thread!  It is so amazing how many times that lips and hands are used between Ennis and Jack.  I adore everyone's favourite lips and hands moments, and my faves are:

1.  Jack touching Ennis's face after "aint no reins on this one" - my ultimate all time favourite touch - I melt when I see how this touch makes Ennis react.  Heavenly.
2.  Ennis touching Jack after their reunion kiss - the way they look at each other when Ennis does this too - it is so so beautiful.

There's another one I just thought of (if it's been mentioned previously, I apologise) - when Ennis gets thrown from the horse and Jack wants to treat the cut on Ennis's face.  Jack holds his hand up to clean the cut, says "let me see" and almost touches Ennis's face, before Ennis takes the soaked scarf off Jack. I always look at how their hands get intertwined during that bit, and wonder if Ennis feels a jolt run through him as I am sure Jack must.   :)

Another fab thread!! Just to add, there's something about FNIT (apart from the obvious) when Jack makes his advance and Ennis leaps up and they are kneeling facing one another. Jack grasps Ennis' face and Ennis sort of fights it, but you see how hard he is holding onto Jack's head. He thinks he SHOULD fight it but he can't. He's holding onto Jack like he can't let go. THAT lttle bit i find REALLY sexy, amongst all the others of course!! :P ;)

Mm-hmm, absolutely. When Ennis holds on like that I think that's Jack's "green light" to continue with what he started. Notice that it's only after Ennis has a good hold of Jack and they've stared into each others eyes for a second that Jack moves to unbuckle his belt.... DAMN! I promised myself I wasn't going to mention that again... ;D

Christie - that's a good point about the touch after the "no reins on this one" line (and actually, it was that touch, rather than the line that made me choose my user name!). When Jack first reaches over, he touches Ennis's ear, then strokes his face and then, as the scene fades out, moves his hand to the back of Ennis's head and runs his fingers through Ennis's hair - he's just so sweet there, after Ennis has just shot his dreams down in flames, too :'(

I think Ennis feels something as soon as Jack starts to clean his face, and that's why he quickly takes the scarf from Jack to do it himself, cos it scares him, and I think Jack notices it too, he looks hurt at first by Ennis basically pushing him away, then he starts moaning about the food again, to cover up what he's really upset about :(
There was some open space between what he knew and what he tried to believe, but nothing could be done about it, and if you can't fix it you've got to stand it.

Echoing a bit of what aimi15  said...
Forehead rubbing seems to be as much a key way for Jack and Ennis to express affection as anything else.  The head-clinging in the first tent scene is just so important as a clue to see exactly how much Ennis wants Jack even as he's struggling over what to do at this moment.  Jack just wants so much to kiss him, and clearly Ennis restraining this from happening.  But, simultaneously Ennis is caressing Jack's hair and their foreheads are pressing together.

The forehead nuzzle is again re-deployed in the second tent scene and in the reunion.  It probably became part of their little intimate rituals just as knocking the cowboy hat off became an inherent part of their foreplay.

This has  just made me think of something else (note to self: do I ever think of anything else other than BBM?!!!)  - during the FNIT, after Jack takes his coat off, and then they grab each other again as you describe so well in your post (god, that is so intense isn't it?  Ennis trying so hard to fight it, but can't resist touching Jack's face/head) - then Jack goes to undo his jeans, and just at that moment when Ennis turns him around, Jack grabs hold of Ennis's arm, like he's encouraging Ennis to push him to the ground and turn him over.  I didn't actually notice that bit until a few viewings down the line, but found it so incredibly sexy I love it as another part of that amazing scene.  :P

Lindsey, I absolutely ADORE that scene.  So beautiful, so romantic, so sad.  I just love when Ennis takes that intake of breath after Jack touches him, like it does something to his insides.  I love the bit when you see the scene from the back, and Jack is still touching Ennis, really getting into the touching his face, ear and back of head thing, and Ennis just letting him do it, cos he wants him to.  Maybe this was to make up for totally breaking Jack's heart..... :'(

Christie,
And to follow up on that a bit, if you watch carefully, that intake of breath by Ennis I believe is an effort to keep from crying. Look closely at Ennis's face, and it looks like he is struggling to maintain his composure as Jack strokes his cheek, as if he is aware of all that he is giving up in his insistence on "No way!"...
I have always interpereted the "No reins on this one" line as his admission of just how strong his feelings for Jack are. *sigh*

Great thread! I don't have too much to add because the posts pretty much sum up those moments beautifully.
I love SNIT-so tender and intimate. I cry during that scene.
Of course the reunion kiss is just so passionately intense- 4 years of build up just released- and then the nuzzle to top it all off. I still get weak kneed watching that. I don't know how Jack was still standing after that!

Yes - that's right!! I love this scene in that it's so rushed - Jack opening his coat with one hand - drool, then virtually ripping his belt open and his zip down - slurp, grabbing at Ennis to flip him, then Ennis yanking his pants down and hiking Jacks up (bare bottom! :P) then spitting on himself, and away they go!! It all happens in a very small space of time but in that time EVERYTHING happens. I love it in that it's just the passion of it, it's all just hands and lips, all that grabbing, fumbling and spitting.
I know we all know this but couldn't help reiterating it again ;) Really great thread  :P

Oh yeah, that is another real favourite bit. The way Ennis pulls away twice, but Jack keeps trying, knowing that Ennis really wants to kiss but is scared. And then Ennis finally plucks up the courage to let Jack kiss him and it's just so sweet....

It all happens in a very small space of time but in that time EVERYTHING happens. I love it in that it's just the passion of it, it's all just hands and lips, all that grabbing, fumbling and spitting.
I know we all know this but couldn't help reiterating it again ;) Really great thread  :P

As if we need an excuse to talk about all these wonderful and heart-stopping moments!!!  But isn't it great!   ;)  Yeah, it does happen pretty quickly, but thank god for the pause button, the rewind button, and the slo-mo button!!!! lol.

Christie,
And to follow up on that a bit, if you watch carefully, that intake of breath by Ennis I believe is an effort to keep from crying.
*sigh*

Oh don't get me started!   :'(  I agree with you 100% though.  When I see how gutted Jack is after Ennis's refusal to make any solid commitment to live together, and then hear how Ennis says "there aint no reins on this one".....this is probably the only way Ennis can express what Jack means to him.
Ennis is probably so churned up inside, for rejecting Jack, for loving Jack, for being the way he is....that when Jack touches him, it just near enough sets him off crying.  But he has to hold that in.

Well, he may hold the tears in, but I don't.    :'(  :'(

For some reason, this bit really set me off on my latest viewing. I usually don't get too choked up until the "sometimes I miss you so much" bit, but that touch and Ennis's sigh really got to me this time. I dunno - maybe it's something to do with reading all the posts on here :'(
He will be eternally missed, but he will never be forgotten

Christopher Nolan, accepting the Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe on Heath's behalf.

He was, as an actor and a professional and a human being, one of a kind

Charles Roven, accepting Heath's BAFTA.

This award tonight would have humbly validated Heath's quiet determination to be truly accepted by you all here — his peers within an industry he so loved.

Kim Ledger, accepting Heath's Oscar.

Well that makes 3 of us. That is the scene right now that really "gets to me", for the reason I mentioned above. All this time I had more or less thought of Ennis as being in denial of his feelings for Jack, but now it seems more like he was aware of them, at least part of the time, and just had to keep choking them back. I cry at this scene for both of them.  :'(
Of course, other scenes get me this way at different times.
Jack: " Nice to know you, Ennis Del Mar."
