Hi Russianman!

I like what you say about the scenes when the two are sitting by the fire. So much love is conveyed just through looks. It is also what makes the movie so strong: Most of it is in the way people in this movie look at each other. Not only Jack and Ennis, but Alma and Ennis, Randall and Jack, the Rodeo Clown and Jack, Aguirre and his binoculars, Jack and Ennis across the mountain, when they are in different camps. I could go on and on.

Yes, Moncita! ANd this is the greatness of the film! It is long time ago that I have seen SUCH acting. Actors just live the lives of their charachters. Heath and Jake should get OScars!!!!!

Every time I think how Jack looks at Ennis saying :"It could be like this, just like this... always", I have tears in my eyes

Well said, Russianman! This is one of the most beautiful aspects of the film: Jack's ability to penetrate through the wall of fear that keeps Ennis locked away from the rest of the world. It's wondrous, and Heath is superb in translating this to the screen.

We all should have a friend in our lives who inspires total acceptance. To be seen in such light and to give such a gift is love itself.

Proulx says it well in her story when she writes:

"They were respectful of each other's opinions, each glad to have a companion where none had been expected. Ennis, riding against the wind back to the sheep in the treacherous, drunken light, thought he'd never had such a good time, felt he could paw the white out of the moon."

Oh, you make me cry. Because nobody can ever know if he will see his or her beloved again. Anything might happen. Actually, that is one reason why some people break off relationships: They would rather be alone than live through the pain of losing someone. And Ennis has to live through this horror, plus the horror of not knowing what really happened. God, here I go again :'(

I must say, all those "wordless" quotes are my favourites: The scenes by the fire, the look between Ennis and Jack's mother, when he leaves with the shirts, lonely Ennis at the fourth of July picknick, but most of all: the look in Jack's eyes, when Ennis is driving away for the very last time. So beautiful and mournful, the juxtaposition of the flashback scene and this goodbye. Sniff.

I'm thinking of that first day, just before they go up to the mountain with the sheep, Ennis looks at Jack who's trying to stay on the horse. They have scarcely spoken to each other, but that look could mean so many things. For example, admiration.

God reading all these are making me cry :'( and I had just posted a post saying I thought I was getting back to normal, how wrong could I be?! There's just so many amazing scenes and quotes, and they're all so beautiful. The bit that really got me in the cinema (was sobbing, it was embarrassing! I was the only one audibly crying! :-[ ) was when Ennis finds the shirts. And of course, the flashback scene and also the bit where Jack and Ennis are in the tent about to kiss and sort of holding each others' heads. That gets to me to for some reason. Lauren x

Stephan, As a horserider myself, I think Jack was doing some of his rodeo moves in this scene - riding a bucking bronco? Not an expert on this kind of riding, but that was my interpretation. Maybe trying to impress Ennis. I think Ennis was laughing inside reconfirming his dad's opinion, "Rodeo guys are all f--ups." (Not an exact quote) Many people seem to think that Ennis looks at Jack with sexual interest and to interpret much of what he says as "flirting" much earlier in the movie than I do. I think that he just enjoys Jack's company and feels comfortable enough around Jack to let his guard down to reveal the charming individual within. I really don't think he ever thinks of Jack in that light until Jack makes his move. I think it is so ooutside of Ennis' reality, that the thought would never enter his mind at least not consciously. I don't think he was ever sexually aattracted to Jack before the first tent scene. He fell in love with Jack, the person, not in lust with Jack, the sex object. Maybe, I am just being naive?

I love this, people always say to me that (when I was younger ) I always went out with people who I was friends with first. I think you can love a person without the sexual attraction being there at first.

This is why the movie hit home with me, the realism of the situation and with which Heath and Jake played it, rang more true with me than any other formulaic love story before it on film.

Tom, I think you are so right. Perhaps the frindship first theory is more prevalent in gay relationship? (I am not gay) Does that sound stupid? We are all different and enter relationships differently despite our orientations.

This is what makes Enn's love SO special to me, even more so than Jack's. It defies his whole being. He goes against everything he's ever known to express his love for Jack. Truly enchanting! Thanks for sharing - Nancy

I think that there was interest, even from Ennis' part, but he didn't know what it was. the first night was just a f***, but the second night was the beginning of love.

The quote is directly out of the story and IMHO is the turning point where they go from being two guys working together for the summer to being friends enjoying each other's company. The rest is like dominoes falling against each other finding an end.

Not what I heard...there were 3 "It's OK" and no "I'm sorry"....I really wanted to agree with all of ya' ...but will believe the subtitles when I see them...and stay on my 'ears' side for the time being.
