THis of course, is also quite memorable!  For some reason, I think of our fellow member NoReins whenever I hear this quote!  :)

Yes,it's memorable because,IMO,it's the best love's statement without words that Ennis could say to Jack.To realize that their love-or "this thing"-can't be stopped because it's stronger than them.
Ennis’s eyes gone bright with shock, mouth opening then closing again. “Love?” Ennis said finally, voice strangling in his throat.

Jack smiled sad. “Yeah, Ennis. Love.” Leaned forward and kissed Ennis’s temple, whispered, “What’d you think it was, all this time?”
("If I asked")

Mrs. Twist to Ennis:   "Come back and see us again" ..I always got the feeling that Ennis felt had he known Jack's mom would be this accepting, he would visited sooner. She gave him hope that there was one person who did'nt hate . He lingered outside as if saying * yeah I could've lived here after all. Maybe this could've worked.
..."yet he is suffused with a sense of pleasure because Jack Twist was in his dream"...

Yes, it was the only thing he could promise Jack, and I do think it was his best indication that his love had no bounds.

The power of associations!  :)

You know, I have mixed feelings about this.  Sometimes, I think Ennis would never come back, and Mrs. Twist's encouragement was her way of sayiong to him (if for the last time) that they were forever bound to each other via Jack.

I tend to think that he would come back to visit Jack's grave and Mrs. Twist. :-\\

 I think he'd return too.

It looks like he bonded somewhat with Jack's mom as well as she with him., their common interest , Jack.
I like to feel that perhaps on a birthday, or the aniversity of Jack's death , he would return to Jack's grave at LF.

Ennis knows that Jack felt enough to discuss his existence with his parents. Something he knows he could never do with his own  parents, even if they'd survived. Part of the depth of Jack, and  his love for Ennis.

Although Jack mentioned Randall also, I think Mrs. Twist knew especially that it was Ennis who owned her son's heart. Despite OMT,  it was Ennis's shirt hanging upstairs  with Jack's for 20 years,  She would be someone he could eventually speak about he and Jack's relationship and the full meaning of it. She could tell him Jack's life story. Who Jack was as a son. It's more info than he'd ever feel comfortable  discussing with Lureen. Apparently there was alot to Jack that Ennis was yet to discover, and just don't think Ennis was done with Jack after he died. Not just  yet.
Roberta Maxwell, the actress  who played Jack's mom in the film gave an excellent performance. A woman of few words, verbally...but her eyes spoke volumes of  sympathy, and  insightful acceptance for  Ennis though she'd lost her only son. I feel she could tell from the tears that Ennis loved Jack as much as her son loved him and  he seemed so alone.

 Quote:

" That Fire and Brimstone crowd?....Perhaps they were a bit too judgemental for Ennis's comfort. I know a little about that!!!

Ennis alluded to religious questioning in  the film. Personally  I've learned  long ago learn to stay away from religious/political arguments, but maybe Ennis held some  religious guilt towards the whole thing or a part of him did.Jack, says fellas like them (sinners)  "marching off to hell" and Alma hung with the "fire and brimestone "crowd and made judgements towards Jack at Thanksgiving. Maybe this contributed to Ennis's stoic, orderly manner, the fear of bucking traditional values except in secret with Jack  and even  then, thoughts that in the back of his mind,  there was a huge price to pay for loving Jack. Did'nt Ennis feel that somehow,  he'd be *punished* for loving Jack? Maybe it partially explains the fear.  I know...it's deep, so was this relationship. Just a thought...Thanx

Slightly OT: very interesting POV, atalley  and aintfoolin -- that you think that Ennis would be back.  Honestly, I go back and forth of this sometimes, but overall, I think that he probably wouldn't be back.  When Alma Jr. visits Ennis in his trailer 2 years later, we get the impression that Ennis was completely out of touch with the outside world.  It would, for example, seem to me that he never revisited LF during this time...

Perhaps this is a fit subject for a separate thread?  :)
