In the story it's "you wouldn't do it Ennis" in the movie it's "You didn't want it Ennis" yeah it's harder to take when it
sounds like Jack didn't think he wanted a life together.  But that scene when he drives off after the divroce brush off is
really gut wrenching.

Absolutely!!!  I will second you on that one.

Oh yeah, there are a few subtle differences in wording, not many changes, but a few. You're right though, not wanting it made it harder for us to take!

When Jack is giving his "what we got now is Brokeback Mountain" speech, it's really hard to look at anything else, but the past two times, I watched Ennis' face.  When Jack says, "You have no idea how bad it gets"...yeah, Ennis does know how bad it gets.  It's all over his face.  Every word is like a knife in his heart.

"Tell you what...the truth is...sometimes I miss you so much I can hardly stand it."   :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

You are welcome, Cody. This is one that breaks my heart every single time. They did love each other - why did it have to come to this?

You are welcome, Cody. This is one that breaks my heart every single time. They did love each other - why did it have to come to this?

It was born out of fear. Ennis feared the "What If's..." (what if someone sees us, what if someone knows we live together, what if my daddy killed that guy), Jack fears the "lonliness and isolation" (not being able to say I love you, not being with the one he loves, being stuck in a marriage he didn't want, being apart from Ennis)

You are right.  He does indeed say he can't stand it anymore.  My take on that...and Jacks reaction...is that Jack finally lets go of his dream...he realizes that Ennis is hurting so much as a result of their relationship...and that he is not gettting what he needs...and he attempts to move on and let Ennis go so they can both stop hurting.  Of course it doesn't work...but Jack does try.

I know this is old, but I just had to comment on it, because it describes what I feel about that scene so perfectly (mirrored by what I just decided to do in my own life, with my own boyfriend). The things this movie (and the discussions with you, folks) tells us about ourselves are just mindboggling. Love it!

Oh, and another quote:

"What about you Ennis", Jack says after he tells him he redlined it all the way, couldn't get there fast enough (so sweet!). He wants to hear how it was for Ennis, and we see Ennis's face, what he would express, if he could, we know how he was waiting, unable to do anything but think of Jack that whole day, maybe for weeks? But Jack doesn't. He is behind Ennis. Actually, in the story, Ennis does say something about how he "wrang it out" thinking of Jack. I like the way everything is reduced to his facial expression in the movie. It makes a stronger point of Ennis's "wordlessness".

the movie doesn't allow in words what Ennis wish to speak: but in the book as you mention ENNIS sates:  I like doin it with women, yeh, but Jesus H., ain't nothin like this.
I never had no thoughts a doin it with another guy except " I sure wrang it out a hundred times thinkin about you".
His reference to his feelings towards Jack

Ennis later in the conversation does also say: Took me a year to figure out it was I shouldn't a let you out a my sights.
in reference to the split up that summer after they got paid and went their ways.

1. Having seen the film 5 times now, there's one line I appreciate more and more : when Ennis changes his mind about going to Juior's wedding, he says : "They can get themselves a new cowboy."
My heart melts.... He means he's going to the wedding, even if it means losing his job, right ? I remember that in the last scene with Jack, the argument was about Ennis not being able to quit his job like in the past. But at the end, love is more important than his job. Just like in the old days.  :-[ :-[ :-[

2. Ennis's name for Jack : "Jack F.....in' Twist." I love it !

Stephen, you made an excellent point concerning human nature. How many of us, myself included, have put a relationship on a back burner, because we have been more consumed by a job, etc. only to realize what was lost in the process. I'm going to be very honest and admit I did that in the past with my current beau, my one and only Bubba early on. It was a mistake that I regret, but have since that time worked really hard to make him my priority.

The quote "ain't no reins on this one" has so many levels of meaning the more I think about it..it can't be defined, it is as wide open as the Rockies in Big Sky country, but also the use of the word one as it is emphasized at the end, a one shot deal for Ennis, only Jack could have that.

One other quote that is starting to get to me is "Why do we always have to be in the cold?"  I'm beginning to think that Jack is really asking why they always have to be at odds -- outsiders with each other and the world.  Hiding behind lies.  Unknowing.
Scruffy, now I'm back to BBM after a break.

You add another perspective here, which I missed (I seem to miss 'em all ;D).   The story talks about the cold, so I took this line literally -- always camping in the durn cold.

Now I think you're right about the wider meaning, of being at odds ... with the world, among other things.
Look what I found in the story, where they discuss having children (final camping trip, not in the movie): Jack bursts out, "But f***-all has worked the way I wanted.  Nothin ever came to my hand the way I wanted."

Good interpretation.

PS  i have a distant cousin and friends just moved to Nanaimo--better get up there see y'all. Off topic--sorry

Alma: You know, your friend could come inside, have a cup of coffee...
Ennis: He's from Texas.
Alma: Texans don't drink coffee?

I know it's not much, but it makes me laugh everytime I think about it. Probably because I am a Texan, and I drink a LOT of coffee. I mean, usually at least a pot a day. When I go out to Denny's at night, I drink at least ten cups, black. That kind of freaks my friends out. They put like ten sugars and two creams in each cup, and I drink them straight black.
Dog Canyon, Texas is the most beautiful place in the world. You should check it out.
