Thank you, Tom! It is even more important because here in Russia the critics critisize the film even if they did not see it. Just read one review with wrong qutations, terrible translation etc. I am afraid that when the film is on they will dubb it and it will be totally useless to go and see it here. Because the translators will change the essence. Besides, you need to hear VOICES and INTONATION of Heath and Jake to get a real sense of the film.

I don't know how they can laugh at that part of the movie as that whole scene when things between them are breaking down is gut wrenching and sad in it's entirety. Maybe it was nervous laughter?

I have some friends here who don't get this film and don't get what it means to me. That is their right, they will never change what I got from the movie, cos they haven't lived my life.

Truthfully if we all felt exactly the same it would be a boring place to live. What amazes me is that world wide this movie is affecting people, despite language and when we get to places like this site we know that no matter what some people say (or if they laugh) at things in this movei...we know that we are not the only ones who got it's message.

That is very comforting !

I hate watching dubbed movies. I stay away from them as much as I can. I don't know about BBM in french (and I don't wanna), but in my experience (at least here in France), the dubbing never stays true to the nuanced meanings of the script. Plus, I need to hear the actors talking, since so much is said in the tone of their voices. Especially with actors like Jake and Heath in BBM.

I don't think they have. At least, that's what I'm telling myself, because I can't comprehend how anyone could come up with such a comment after seeing it.

All its detractors have said it's overestimated. Can't the critics be a bit more original?

Hi Russianman!   How anyone can think the film is overestimated is beyond me.  Old guys in cowboy hats still look hunky to me.  I didn't read all your posts.  Did you see the movie someplace else?  You said it isn't out there yet.  Actually the one thing I was a little disappointed in was Ennis' make-up at the end of the movie.  I know in the story he is supposed to have a growth on his eye, but in the movie what they did to his right eye doesn't look very realistic.  Also, I thought the guys looked older than they should.  Maybe, thay just wanted to stress the toll their unhappy lives had taken on them??   Or maybe guys who do that kind of physical labor and don't have the means to take care of themselves better (Ennis) look like that??        Fortunately I don't know.  My husband is 40 and he looks a hell of a lot better (age wise) than that.      - Nancy

That's probably it. I know a lot of people who have hard jobs and no health insurance. It takes it's toll on a body. Stress can also do it. Until I was 19, people thought I looked 15. Now I'm 22 and I've been clocked at 27. It's strange.

I think so. It is a typical response from Ennis who longs for attachment with Jack but could not deal with his unfaithfulness. Ennis is a violent person and that is how it copes with his emotion.

I like the way you put that ... I think Ennis was privately hurt that Jack was seeing someone else who he might be physically attracted too ... someone who could potentially replace himself.  However, Ennis masks this as being homophobia due to his own insecurities ... it kinda makes you wanna hug both of them really.  :-

Although I think you are both right (Ennis was displaying his homophobia and jealousy),  I think he also had a third reason for saying that.  Jack could get them both killed.  As it turns out his fears were not so unwarranted.  If people know that Jack is gay, it wouldn't take them long to figure out that Ennis is too.                                                                       -Nancy

For some reason the quote that I seem to remember the most is right after Ennis shoots the elk and Jack pushes him and screams, and then Ennis says something along the lines of "I was tired of your dumb ass always missin'!" and pushed Jack back. It just made me smile for some reason.

Kristin,  I love this too.   I love that Jack is really the only one Ennis ever shows his humor with.........all those harmonica jokes and comments about Jack being in the rodeo.  Ennis is so repressed, that he gets so much pleasure out of other people's free spiritness (not a word - at a loss).  The way he looks at Jack, whenever he lets go ...... pretending he's riding the bull.  You even see that look in  his eye with Cassie,when she just puts her feet in his lap.  It's like he's thinking, "Boy, I wish I could feel uninhibited enough to do that."  I kind of hope he rekindles a FRIENDSHIP with Cassie, after Jack's death.  I think he found pleasure in her company.  He just didn't want the sexual thing.                     -Nancy

I love that Ennis is only funny with Jack  The only other time he is humorous is at Thanksgiving dinner, when he talks about his 3 seconds of fame.   Even here we see Ennis' honesty.  Most men would have exaggerated and given their daughter the story she was looking for ( that he was great), but Ennis downplays it and turns it into something funny.  I LOVE THAT!!!!  I think he is in such a good mood here, because he is with the people he loves  (I do believe in his own way he does love Alma.  I love when he says, "Don't blame Alma.  It's not her fault.")  but for the first time he is with them without deceit.  He doesn't have to pretend to want Alma physically and he doesn't have to lie about fishing trips anymore.  At least now his deception is only through ommission.  He does not have to give voice to his lies anymore. I don't think Ennis ever liked to lie.   He has a great sense of freedom, unfortunately it is soon to be squashed by Alma.   Why couldn't she just let it be?  I think she finally confronts him here with her anger (which we see in her eyes all through dinner), because she feels safe with Monroe and the girls in the next room.  Although she is kidding herself, if she thinks Monroe is any match to Ennis.  I think she was always afraid to confront Ennis, because of his capacity for violence, although I think she was wrong here.  I don't think Ennis could have ever hurt any woman physically.

This is from the book, but I loved it because it demonstrated Ennis and Jack's intimacy and Ennis' crazy, complicated love for Jack,

"...Ennis (to Jack), not big on endearments, said what he said to his horses and daughters, little darlin."

I LOVE THIS LINE!!!!!!!!!  I wish they had put this in the movie and I honestly don't know why they did not.  I think at some point I hear Jack call Ennis, "Sweetheart."  Did anyone hear that, or was it just my imagination??                      -Nany

I love all Ennis' humor with Jack, the only person he can let his guard down with and be funny (except with his daughter at Thanksgiving dinner).  I really love to watch the amusement in his face at the free spirited nature of others, Jack and even Cassie Cartwright.  It's like he just wishes he could be like that, and with Jack he can.  I tell you between Heath, Jake and Michelle there was some phenomenal acting going on there.  Between the intonation of their voices and the expressiveness of their faces.......it blows me away.  I read the short story and I would never have been able to figure out how to deliver those lines with such meaning.  I read it now and I can HEAR their voices, the melodic and melancholic quality of Jack's voice when he says, "It could be like this always."  How do they come up with that?  The silent look on Ennis' face when he learns of Jack's affair from his dad!!!!    When Michelle wipes away her tear and reaches for her coffee cup.  Unfu---ing believable!!!!! I've never seen acting like that in my life.

You know it's funny. My mind played tricks on me.  The first time I saw BBM I actually thought I heard Jack saying he was having an affair with the ranch manager.  My mind knew the truth.  The second time I realized that is not what he said.  This made more sense given the exchange in their last meeting.

It really is unbelievable that Heath was able to express sooooo much through his facial expressions.  The one that got me the most is when Jack's dad tells Ennis about the other guy.  His dad is defying Ennis to react, staring him down.  Ennis is trying so hard to keep it together, although he knows why Jack did it.  Heath shows all that in his face!!!!!!      Unbelievable!!!!!!!!                                 - Nancy

Thanks, Stephan and thanks for your help in finally learning how to post!   Ha! Ha!    Ennis' facial expressions suggest that at least he is amused by Cassie's carefree attitude - a step above his time with Alma.  (although this is understandable because they are in a much more carefree environment - a bar)   But with Jack he can take it one step further and be truly funny himself - it is superb!                 - Nancy

Ennis feels so natural around Jack, the expression of his face can be so mild and funny. He cannot say it with words but with his eyes...! The way he looks at Jack when they sit at the fire! Jack is the only friend and only love that Ennis has.
