I really enjoy these exchanges between Jack and Ennis.  They just drive home their differences.  Jack is just sooooooo ready to bend the rules and Ennis is so lawabiding and infrexible...........all the more power it gives his love for Jack.

"Stud duck"   - Annie refers to Jack's dad as a stud duck.  For the first time today I noticed that Lureen's dad refers to himself as a stud duck whose going to carve the turkey.

Has anyone heard this term before?

Not me but English is my second language.  I read a lot os stuff in English but never came across Stud Duck.

I have never heard the expression before either but in her essay, "Getting Movied", Annie says she heard the expression somewhere and it just seemed like the right way to describe Jack's dad.

Yeah, it really sounds like a made up term, but perhaps not.

Could be that she heard someone use it, and they had made it up.

As much research as Annie has done on Wyoming, I suspect it's probably some obscure, backwoods Wyoming dialect that you just don't encounter anywhere else.

There is one other (there are so many) wordless quotes I enjoy : that is the noise that Lureen makes with her mouth after Jack gives her back her red hat at the rodeo. Should I call it her "matin' call' ?   ;D

Think of the little squeaks she makes when talking to Ennis on the phone. It was saying so much.

Jack is so completely and totally in love with Ennis he can't help himself. Ennis on the other hand is so completely and totally in love with Jack that he can't express himself. Could there ever be to more starcrossed lovers? Tragic love, but a tragic love like we have never seen or may see again in our times. I weep and weep and it never seems to get better. I have a love that will never grow old because it is a love like no other seen before, but a love so many of us have felt.

Jake delivers Jack's lines with such anguish.  "Sometimes I miss you so much I can hardly stand it" "You have no idea how bad it gets"  "I wish I knew how to quit you!"  Sometimes I just wanted to shake some sense into Ennis...I know he's in pain too, but he's his own worse enemy.  Like Jack said, they "Could have had a real good life!"  What a waste!  Donna :(

Jake did a fantastic job...their last scene together is fantastic.
We all wanted to shake Ennis and tell him to open his eyes and ears...what a waste indeed.

But that "Jack I swear" ...still gets to me...even when I read the story.

I understand what Ennis means when he says at the end "I swear" but it is hard to put into words what he means.

What does it mean to you -- anyone?

I have to agree with you...there are so many classic lines and Jack has many of them....for some reason one that ALWAYS tugs at my heart is "You know it could be like this, just like this always".  I think it is because Jake's voice is just perfect in the delivery...all this sweet hope that you know is gonna get shot down.  :'(  :'(  :'(

I am looking for a quote if anyone can help:
Towards the end of the movie when Ennis is with Alma Jr. he says something like"if you don't have much, you don't need much"
Does anyone remember this?
That really struck at me!

It is when Alma Jr. says he needs more furniture, and he says the line...

I found that quote to be so noble.  It shows that Ennis is just a simple humble man who doesn't expect anything more in life than what he has built for himself, proud of who he is despite his poverty, unlike a fair amount of social parasites today who milk the system and try to live above their means.

Yes, rikcub, that one breaks my heart, too.  And like you said he says it with such "sweet hope"...but we know it will never be.  As their lives go on, I think Jack realizes that Ennis will never embrace their love, but in spite of that, in spite of the "short f***ing leash" Ennis keeps Jack on, Jack can't help himself...he keeps coming back.  He keeps hoping.   Donna  :'(

For some reason, Jack's "see ya for supper" after the first night in the tent gets to me.  He comes wobbling out of that tent, shirt untucked, and walking funny (he did think to put his hat on, though  ;D).  Then he says the line, hoping it's not over.  The expression on Jack's face reads a thousand different emotions:  longing, worry, concern, hope, shame, love, lust, etc.  Love the scenes on BBM--wish they never left!  ;D

You know, that is the first thing I looked for when Jack comes out of the tent...did he walk funny.  I could never see that he did.  When he comes out of the tent he does "wobble" some but that is because he just woke up, not because he was sore or anything like that.  Or at least that is the way I took it.
