I find that scene really, really sad. Although they're supposedly talking about their relationships with women (we know in Jack's case he's talking about a man), and Ennis makes that "you probably deserve it" comment, it comes through so clearly to me that Ennis loves Jack, and cannot stand the thought of him with anyone else, but because of his inability to communicate this, makes a joke and a forced laugh, which trails off as if even he realised it was unconvincing.  You can almost taste the bitter heartache and frustration in both of them at this moment.....and then Jack, coming back to reality, realises none of that matters, and has to tell Ennis how he feels.  Ennis says nothing.    :'(  :'(  :'(

sorry, we've gone off topic again, but hard not to do with this amazing film!!!

Remember the "sending up a prayer scene"? Did you see Ennis wink after he talked about  Jack forgetting the harmonica---letting Jack know he was thankful for the reunion? Let me know..

Absolutely.  That is one of the small but stellar moments of the film...one of those moments you realize just how much Ennis loves Jack...and in his own way Ennis admits it! :)

I've seen this film 13 times and I missed the wink. :-[

Now I have an excuse for a 14th trip!  ;)

Jarrad

Me too.. I missed the wink...yikes...ok..going to see the movie again today...14th time I think..

Saw the movie again today and spotted the wink.

Did anyone notice that was the last scene where both of them genuinely laughed and smiled.  We see it again too but it seemed forced.  I like the way Jack laughs.

Bringing this old topic up.. :d:

Regarding the "What" scene between Ennis and Jack by the camp fire during the summer of 1963..just a tiny observation of mine.

What is the word that Jack starts his line with after Ennis' "What?"?

The subtitles on both the UK blu-ray and the US full-frame DVD transliterate: "Man, that's more words than you've spoke in the past two weeks." I swear that I keep hearing: "Friend, that's more words..." That makes a difference..I prefer "Friend...".

What do your ears tell you?

Btw, this is my favourite scene of the film. Ennis and Jack are truly connecting and feeling comfortable. The facial expressions tell more than any words could.

***

Again, the French subtitles rule: "Quoi? Tu viens de parler plus que dans les deux dernières semaines."  "s;"

The script certainly reads "friend", not "man" and that's what I hear in the movie.

Thank you chowhound and chameau for your confirmations!

I checked the both subtitles twice just today: strange that they have the same error.

I waiting for my copy of 'Story to Screenplay' to arrive from US Amazon. The delivery is both slow and expensive to Europe.. :-\\

Friends, definitely. Every time I watch this scene, my heart is full of warmth ... <^(
Lucky for you the screenplay. I believe that it is expensive. Rdx, tell us when you get it, I will buy some BBM things. :)

The subtitles on my DVD say Man, but my ears and Jake's mouth movements clearly say Friend, which I definitely prefer, because they are becoming friends at this point <^(
