Ennis (looking back at Jack):

You shut up about Alma. This ain't her fault.

(Jack looks pained)

Bottom line is, we're around each other and
this thing grabs hold of us again, in the
wrong place, in the wrong time, an' we're dead.

Ennis: There was these two old guys ranched together down home, Earl and Rich. They was a joke in town, even tough they was pretty tough old birds.  They found Earl dead in a irrigation ditch.  They'd took a tire iron to him, spurred him up, drug him around by his dick till it pulled off...

Jack, with horror in his eyes:  "You seen this?"
'You know, it could be like this, just like this...always."

"Well, what's the point of ridin' a piece a stock fer eight seconds?"   *Grin*

"Our husbands ain't  the least bit interested in dancin'.  They ain't got a smidgeon a rhythm between 'em!"

(Ennis) "Well, speak fer yerself.  You may be a sinner, but I ain't yet had the opportunity."   (Jack) "Hmmm," handing Ennis the whiskey bottle.  *he chuckles* "

Jack's heart is breaking.

"Fer how long?' he asks, sadly, resigned that his dream is being shattered before his very eyes.

Melancholy guitar music plays as the scene shifts to Alma and Jenny swinging in the creaking swings.  We hear Ennis' voice shouting muffled in the background:

"It's nearly suppertime, where the hell ya think yer goin'?"

Ennis angrily kicks a tar bucket before striding quickly up the steps to the apartment.

Next scene:  Our boy Jack is up on a combine, shouting down to a group of leery good ol' boys with too much cash to burn.

"Listen to her purr, gentlemen.  You ain't gonna get that with your Caddie. I told you she could do it, now lemme show ya'!"

Jack gives the good ol' boys a demonstration of the Versatile combine's talents.

Scene inside Lureens nicely appointed office, Jack's bullriding belt buckles mounted and displayed on the wall behind her. Two well dressed farmers glance out the window at Jack's freewheeling demonstration of the fancy farm equipment

Farmer#1: Didn't that piss-ant use to ride the bulls?

Farmer#2: He used to try . . . .

Lureen looks over at them, mildly disappointed.

Next scene:
Alma comes home, carrying a brown paper bag full of groceries.  She sets it on the table and glances at the mail.  Besides the black and white grocery store flyer with honey on special for $1.49, she sees a postcard.  Flipping it over, she reads that Jack will be seeing Ennis in a coupla weeks and that the fish should be jumping. She hears a door slam and quickly hides the postcard inside the flyer.

New scene:
Jack comes down the hall to Lureen's office

"Honey...you seen my blue parka?"

Lureen, looking totally bored with the whole conversation:

"Right.  oh, ok, so fine.  I'll just, I'll call later," she says, without even bothering to tear herself away from her adding machine.

Jack just looks at her, baffled by her seeming indifference to their only child's education.

"Right....right,"  Jack murmurs, as he goes over to Lureen, bends over, gives her a dry peck on the lips.

"I got fourteen hours a drivin' ahead a me", he says, softly.

"See, now, it don't seem fair", Lureen says, with exasperation, "You goin' up there two, three, times a year and him never comin' here," in a quiet, sing-songy giving up kinda tone.

Jack turns around in the hallway, headin' out, and gives her a vague wave.

New Scene in the DelMar apartment:
Ennis is packing for his fishin' trip, going through the closet while the radio blares in the background. Ennis picks one of his shirts, takes a quick wiff of the collar and stuffs it in his duffel bag. He moves out to the kitchen grabbing his thermos and kissing his two young daughters on the way.

ALMA (readin' through the newspaper ignoring Ennis):
Ennis, they got a openin' over at the power company, might be good pay.

ENNIS:
Uh, clumsy as I am, I'd probably get electrocuted.

Ennis, leaning in toward the girls playing on the living room floor:

"Well, alright, as long as I don't have to sing! Uuh?" as the girls giggle and one of them says playfully, "Daaaadiieeeeeee!"

Ennis grabs his wicker basket off the table where Alma is sitting, reading the paper, and his hat off the rack, preparing to fly out the door, his feet not quite touching the floor in his excitement to see his man Jack.
