John Twist continues: He had some half-baked notion the two of you was going to move up here, build a cabin, help run the place.

John gives Ennis a long cold glance and goes on: Then this spring he's got another fellow that's going to come up here with him, build a cabin and help run the place. Some ranch neighbor of his from down in Texas...he's going to split up with his wife and come back here. A pause, then sarcastically: So he says. But like most of Jack's ideas, it never come to pass.

JACK'S MA': (trying to comfort Ennis)
I kept his room . . . like it was when he was a boy.
I think he appreciated that.

You are welcome to go up to his room . . . if ya' want.

ENNIS: (softly)
Yeah I'd like that, Thankyou.

Ennis goes up the stairs and enters into Jack's room.He takes a look of the full room first to take a little cowboy figure in his hands.His eyes are full with tears.He opens the window,as wishing that some fresh air enters into the room and makes him feel a little less drowned...Then,he realises Jack's wardrobe and goes there;he looks and caresses his clothings and boots.Suddenly,he finds the shirts:his and Jack's of the happy times in BBM.He hugs and caresses Jack's shirt and a slight "I love you" comes from his lips. :\'(

Ennis, carrying the two shirts, goes downstairs and enters the kitchen. John Twist is still sitting at the kitchen table. Ennis turns his body slightly to keep John Twist from seeing the two shirts, but holds them up slightly to show them to Mrs. Twist. Mrs Twist pulls a paper bag from the counter and puts the two shirts into the bag.

John Twist (cold and angry): Tell you what, we got a family plot and he's going in it.

Mrs Twist, with her back to her husband, gently hands the bag to Ennis.

Ennis (resigned to this fact), nods at OMT: Yes sir.

Ma Twist (with sympathy): You come back and see us again.

ENNIS: (can barely speak, nods his head, says softly)

(Ennis exits the door, turns, holding the bag of shirts and whispers to Mrs. Twist)

Next scene: We see Ennis putting some numbers in his letter box,when Junior arrives in her new car.
Ennis:-Well,hey there,Junior.
Jr.:-Hey,Daddy.
Ennis:-Come here.(They kiis and hug each other).

Ennis and Jr. walk slowly toward his trailer.

Ennis: Well, you're 19 now...I guess you can do what you want.

Ennis playfully nudges Jr. with his shoulder to her shoulder.

Ennis and Jr go into the trailer.

Jr sits down and takes her jacket off while Ennis gets coffee.

Jr: Daddy you need more furniture.

Alma Jr: About a year. The wedding 'll be June 5th at the Methodist church... Jenny 'll be singin',... and Monroe's gonna cater the reception...

Ennis remains thoughtful,with a sad look in his eyes.Then,he says:

-Now,this Kurt fella...he loves you?
Jr.-Yeah,daddy-she smiles-He loves me.
Ennis looks outside the trailer.He seems at the verge of crying.Jr. keeps on talking:
-Was hoping you'd be there.

Ennis takes two glasses from the cabinet and pours a little whiskey (or wine?) in each of them.

Ennis: MY LITTLE GIRL is getting married. Alma Junior smiles at Ennis with love in her eyes.

He walks back over to Jr. and hands her a glass, then sits back down in the chair.

Ennis raises his glass: To Alma and Kurt!

Alma Jr and Ennis clink their glasses together and take a drink.

New scene: Ennis stands outside and watches as Alma Jr drives off down the dusty road.

He turns around and goes back inside the trailer

Ennis walks slowly toward the back of his trailer. He sees Alma Jr.'s sweater on his bed. Ennis picks up the sweater and walks quickly to the door. He opens the door and looks out, but Alma Jr. is gone.

He goes to his little closet, and opens the closet door. He folds Jr.'s sweater, gives it a little kiss and places it on the top shelf of the closet.

As he opens the closet door wider, we see THE SHIRTS, on a wire hanger suspended from a nail. Next to them is a postcard of BBM tacked to the door. Ennis has taken his shirt from inside Jack's and tucked Jack's shirt inside his own.

Ennis gently touches THE SHIRTS. He buttons the top button on Jack's shirt. Ennis then reaches up and gently straightens the postcard.

With tears in his eyes, Ennis says quietly: Jack, I swear...

Ennis stands looking at the shirts and the postcard for a few seconds longer, then slowly closes the closet door and walks away.
