Bobby :Why, mama? I'm gonna be eating this food for the next two weeks.

Jack :Hey, you heard your mama. You finish your meal, and then you can watch the game.

Ennis’s eyes gone bright with shock, mouth opening then closing again. “Love?” Ennis said finally, voice strangling in his throat.

Jack smiled sad. “Yeah, Ennis. Love.” Leaned forward and kissed Ennis’s temple, whispered, “What’d you think it was, all this time?”

Jack walks into the next room and turns the television set off.  He walks back into the dining room and sits down.  When Jack sits down, L.D. puts down the carving knife and fork and starts walking toward the television set.

Lureen:  Daddy?

L.D. turns the television set back on.

Lureen (frustrated and angry):  Daddy!

Jack (turn the tv off for the second time...): Not until he finishes the meal his mama spent 3 hours fixin'
LD rises from his seat, heads toward the TV.
Jack: (angrily, pushed beyond his limit):

Now you sit down you old son-of-a-bitch!! This is my house, my child, and you are my guest. Now you sit down before I knock your ignorant ass into next week!!!

( Oh, I love that line...lol)

In shock, LD meekly returns to his seat. Jack begins carving the turkey. Lureen unsuccessfully tries to suppress a smile of appreciation.

New Scene. Thanksgiving dinner at Monroe and Alma's house, dinner table with Monroe, Alma, Alma Jr., Jenny, and Ennis. Ennis all duded up with a good shirt, bolo tie, hair slicked back. Tension in the air as the family sits quietly, not much to talk about. Finally Alma Jr. looks at her mom nervously then looks at her dad, pipes up:

ALMA Jr.: Daddy tell about when you rode broncs in the rodeo.

Ennis looks a bit surprised, not very comfortable suddenly having been put on stage, a role he doesn't much like. But doesn't want to disappoint his daughters who he obviously adores. Looks at Alma for some visual approval, then begins a short tale:

ENNIS: Uh. Well, it's a short story honey, wus only about three seconds I was on that bronc. . . Uhm, next thing I knew I was flyin' through the air . . . Only I was no angel like you and Jenny here, (gently rubs Jenny's cheek and ear) I didn't have no wings. (Ennis looks back at Alma with a bit a pride that he done this but Monroe hasn't) An' that the story of my saddle bronc career.

Alma looks a bit frustrated or annoyed, Monroe cuts more turkey with an electric knife.

New scene:  Later Thanksgiving evening in the kitchen:

Alma is at the kitchen sink preparing to wash dishes.  Ennis walks in carrying a couple of plates.  Ennis puts the plates in the sink then leans against the counter.

Alma (quietly):  You ought to get married again, Ennis.  (short pause) Me and the girls worry about you being alone so much.

Alma makes a small startled motion, takes a breath and gives Ennis a quick sideways glance.  She clenches her teeth and starts washing a dish.  Speaking slowly and quietly she says:  You still go fishing with Jack Twist?

Alma(still washing a dish, takes a deep breath and says:
You know, I used to wonder how come you never brought any trouts home.
Ennis's face starting to show distress..while Alma continues angrily: always said you caught plenty, and you know how me and the girls like fish.

Alma talks on to an increasingly agitated Ennis:

Alma:  So one night I got your creel case open the night before you went on one of your little trips -- price tag still on it after five years -- and I tied a note to the end of the line...  It said, "Hello, Ennis, bring some fish home. Love, Alma."  And then you come back, lookin' all perky, and said you'd caught a bunch of brownies and you ate them up...  Do you remember?  I looked in the case first chance I got and there was my note still tied there!  That line hadn't touched water in its life!

Alma stops washing, half turns toward Ennis and continues angrily: Don't try to fool me no more, Ennis.  I know what it means.  Jack Twist?  Jack 'NASTY'!!  You and him didn't go up there to fish...

Alma(hysterical)Alma :Get out! Get out! Get out of my house, Ennis del Mar! You hear me? You get out!

Ennis gets out of the house without saying a word, while Monroe and the girls get surprised for the sudden shouts and noise.

Jenny :Daddy?

Monroe :Alma?

Jenny :Bye, Daddy!

Junior :Bye!

Ennis drives his truck to the Black and Blue Eagle Bar.  He gets out of the truck, slams the door and without checking for traffic walks quickly toward the bar directly in front of  a fast moving pick up.  The pick up SCREECHES to a halt and Ennis stops in his tracks.  The angry driver yells: Hey, as*hole, watch where you're going!"

Ennis, without hesitation, runs up to the driver's window and starts hitting the driver through the open window.  The driver pushes Ennis back, opens the door and starts swinging on Ennis.  Ennis and the pick up driver are standing in the middle of the street fighting.  The driver is taller and heavier than Ennis and literally beats him to the ground and does not stop.

Driver: You stupid f*ck!  (Between punches) God damn!  God!  God damn!

Ennis (finally brought down and completely defeated and out of breath): F*ck...

Driver: Damn it!

New Scene.  Beautiful music.  In complete contrast to the violence of the last scenes, we see Ennis and Jack over the years meeting up in the mountains.  We see them by a lake, and crossing a stream.  They are visibly aging.  Jack, with a paunch and mustache; Ennis his skin and hair aging.  In the stream crossing, we clearly see them sullen -- not very happy.  Clearly, the years of separation are taking their toll on each of them...

Next scene: Jack and Ennis by the river , Ennis is washing the dishes...
Jack: All I ask is what's the point of making it?If the taxes don't get it,the inflation will eat it all up.

Jack(smiling slightY):-You should see Lureen punchin' numbers in her adding machine. Hunting for extra zeros, her eyes gettin' smaller and smaller. It's like watchin' a rabbit tryin' to...squeeze into a snake hole with a coyote on its tail.

Ennis :-That's some high class entertainment, if you ask me.

Jack(careless) :-For what it's worth...

Ennis(he seems a little worried) :-You and Lureen, it's normal and all?

Jack(a little surprised for the question) :-Sure.

Ennis is washing dishes in the mountain stream. he glances sideways at Jack and continues speaking:
You ever get the feeling... I don't know, when you're in town, and somebody looks at you, kind of suspicious...like he KNOWS?  And then you get out on the street, and everyone is looking at you, like maybe  they all know, too?

ENNIS: (looks at Jack incredulously) Texas?  Sure, an' maybe you can convince Alma to let you an' Lureen adopt the girls. An' we can just live together herdin' sheep. An' it'll rain money from L.D. Newsome, an' whiskey'll flow in the streams Jack.  That's real smart, real smart.

JACK: Oh hell, you wanna' live your miserable fu**in' life then go right ahead.

ENNIS: Fine, fine.

JACK: I wus just thinkin' out loud.
