Ennis calmly approaches the two . .

BIKER 1: You ought-ta' listen to your old lady then . .

ENNIS: Is that right? (Ennis staring right at the biker)

BIKER 1: Move somewhere else.

Fireworks are going off in the background and inside Ennis's head. He grabs biker1 by his jacket and throws him to the ground. Simultaneously he swings around and, with an amazing leg lift, kicks biker2 square in the face with his foot, biker2 is now out cold on the ground. Ennis comes at biker1 and shouts at him while waving his fist:

ENNIS: What about it!! You wanna' lose about half your f*ckin' teeth? Huh?

BIKER1: Not tonight bud, I'd sure rather not (as he slinks away).

Alma looks on in horror at Ennis's outburst.

We see Ennis standing alone, explosions all about, a man by himself in a crowd.

The explosions continue, as does Ennis's solitary pose, while his wife looks on. 

Alma clings to her youngest daughter and shields the older daughter with her body. 

She raises her lip into a snarl of fear and disdain.  She doesn't know this man who now stands alone in the crowd.  She feels she must protect her children from his angry outburst.

New scene: A cute girl wearing a red hat (that a friend of mine now owns ;)) rides a horse into the arena at breakneck speed...

-Here she comes, ladies and gentlemen! Oh boy, look at her fly! This is Lureen Newsome from right here in Childress, Texas! Come on, folks, she's gotta hear it, let's give her a big hand! She's turning on two! She's around three! Come on, folks! Help her home! Come on! Come on! And the time is 16 and 9!

The announcer continues:

Here's Cheyenne Hodson from Cody, Wyoming!  Come on girl!  She's headed around two!  Is there anybody here from Wyoming? ... Come on, Cheyenne!  And her time is 17 & 2 ... 



Meanwhile, Lureen's hat is blown off in the speed of her exit.  Jack picks up the hat just when Lureen rides back to retrieve it.

Jack (hands the hat back to Lureen): Ma'am... 

Lureen takes the hat, winks at Jack, and rides off.  Jack looks on as she rides off...

Now it's Jack's turn.He's preparing for rodeoing,while the speaker announces him:

-Next up is an up-and-comer! Jack Twist from all the way up in Lightning Flat, Wyoming! He's onboard Sleepy today! Let's hope he's not! Okay! There they go, folks! And look at Sleepy go, boy! He's broke free today, folks! Come on, spin and spin and spin! Oh, boy! Good ride, cowboy! Well, let's see what the judges say! I tell you, folks, that sure looked like the winnin' ride to me!

New scene.  At the bar, near the dance floor.  jack eyes Lureen.  Lureen is being asked by a man for the next dance.  But she is clearly waiting for someone else...  She looks at Jack, who turns his gaze away.  Jack is clearly abashed.  He asks the bartender about Lureen...

Jack: You know that girl?

Jack looks back at Lureen, sees she is still watching him...

Impatient Lureen gets up and walks over to Jack.

Lureen:  What are you waiting for, cowboy?  A matin' call?

New Scene.  On the dance floor.  Jack dances with Lureen, flirting with his hands.fingers.  But clearly, his thoughts are elsewhere.  Out of Lureen's line of sight, we see Jack deep in thought.

New scene:

We see a flashy, red Thunderbird convertible drive along a deserted piece of road, slow, pull to a stop, the motor is cut. Next we see Jack (with his hat still on) and Lureen (who’s been driving) start to go at it hot n’ heavy. In an action not unlike Jack with Ennis SNIT, Lureen takes Jack’s hat, puts it aside and takes position on Jack. Jack crawls (is pushed) over the seat into the back seat. Lureen follows him like a hungry wolf and gets on top of him. All kind of grappling and smooching is goin’ on. Finally Lureen draws back,

LUREEN: You don’t think I’m too fast do you, maybe we should put the breaks on?

Jack smiles back at her, happy to let her do the drivin’:

JACK: Fast or slow I just like the direction you’re going.

Lureen dives back in, can’t resist Jack’s luscious lips.

Next scene:We see Ennis with the two girls under his arms entering into the shop where Alma works.

Ennis:  I guess all the heifers must have decided to calf at the same time.  I figured I could drop the girls off with you.

Alma, as she takes Jenny from Ennis:  Ennis...I...I've got a million things I've got to do before I can leave.  I don't get off for another three hours.

Alma Jr looking up at Alma and pulling at Alma's smock:  Mama, I need crayons.

Alma looking upset and harrassed:  Not now, Alma.

Ennis rushes away.  Alma looks tired and upset.  Alma Jr tries to take a jar of peanuts from the bottom row of a display of peanut jars, causing the whole display to come crashing down.  There are broken glass jars and peanuts all over the floor.  Alma looks on the verge of tears.

Monroe, the store manager, comes running at the sound of breaking glass.

Alma (on the verge of tears):  Monroe, I am so sorry.

A beautiful Lureen coos over her precious new baby.  She lets him grab her finger in his tiny fist.  And guess what?  Company has arrived.  It is the Newsome grandparents who have come to see their new grandchild.

L.D. throws the keys at Jack without even looking to see if he gets them. Jack, who's caught off guard, misses the throw and they fall to the floor, he bends down and picks them up, clearly upset lives the room...

Jack nodds with a sad smile in his lips.Loreen,who has been looking at him during the depictful action of his father,tries to take a little of tension off.

Ennis stares at the card with some disbelief (unfortunately it won't be the last time he looks at a postcard this way). Flips the card over to see what's on the back, maybe it's a trick? Glances quickly at Alma to see if she's watching him and his reaction (she's not). Reads the card again, mouthing the words to make sure he's got it right. Alma questions him:

ALMA: Is he somebody you cowboyed with or what?

ENNIS: Nah, Jack he rodeos mostly. (then thinkin' really quickly he adds) We wus fishin' buddies.

Ennis probably doesn't realize how helpful this little lie will be in the very near future. Leaves the kitchen with his thoughts on Jack.
