- Jack: Not until he finishes eating the meal that his mama took three hours to fix.

L.D doesn't take into account Jack's words and gets up to turn the TV on again.Then,Jack explodes...

Jack calms down enough to finally get up and start carving the turkey. - Cut to a new scene of another Thanksgiving turkey carving, this one with using a gadget electric knife at Monroe an' Alma's. Monroe playing the part of the "stud-duck", but it's clear who the real stud in this room is. :d)

Alma Junior looks admiringly at her daddy all dressed up in his good shirt and bolo tie.

JUNIOR: Daddy, tell about when you rode broncs in the rodeo.

Ennis looks pretty uncomfortable being center stage, and having to talk too! Tough question too, as it was Jack who was the real bronc rider, Ennis wus better ridin' other types a' bulls.  ;)

ENNIS: Uh, . . it's a short story honey, its only about three seconds I wus on that bronc. Um, next thing I knew I was flying through the air. (gestures with his fork) Only I was no angel like you an' Jenny here. I didn't have no wings. An' that's the story of my saddle bronc career.

Alma watches Ennis with some disgust.

After some exchanging gances between Monroe and Alma-this one with rather disgusted,and disgusting,face-and some loving ones from Jr. and Jenny to their daddy,we enter into the following scene.Ennis and Alma are on the kitchen;he has just carried some dishes to be washed up.

-Ennis : -There you go.

-Alma (spitting what she has inside in the right(?)moment):-You ought to get married again, Ennis. Me and the girls worry about you bein' alone so much.

-Ennis : -Well, once burned...

-Alma : -You still go fishing with Jack Twist?

-Ennis :-Not often.


(A horrible storm is coming... )

Alma - You know, I used to wonder how come you never brought any trouts home. You always said you caught plenty, and you know how me and the girls like fish. So one night I got your creel case open the night before you went on one of your little trips (price tag's still on it after five years) and I tied a note to the end of the line. It said, 'Hello, Ennis, Bring some fish home. Love. Alma.' And then you come back looking all perky and said you caught a bunch of browners and you ate them up. Do you remember? I looked in that case first chance I got, and there was my note still tied there. That rod hadn't touched water in its life.

Suddenly,Ennis reacts grasping Alma by her arm and approaching threateningly to her.

-Ennis:-Now you listen to me, you don't know nothing about it.

-Alma (a little afraid of his reaction): -I'm going to yell for Monroe.

.Ennis : .You do it and I'll make you eat the f@#ng floor.

-Alma (already hysterical): Get out!

-Ennis : -And you too!

-Alma : -Get out! Get out! Get out of my house, Ennis del Mar! You hear me? You get out!

Scene continues amid confusion, Ennis is storming out, the girls are calling after their daddy wondering what's going on, Monroe suddenly wakes up from his post meal cogitate can't quite figure the situation and clashing dishes.

MONROE: Alma?

GIRLS: Daddy? - Bye daddy . . . . bye.

Ennis drives off in his one-eyed pickup to the Black N' Blue Eagle" bar. Jumps out heads across the street to the bar right in front of a flatbed pick-up that screeches to a halt on the snow slicked pavement. Driver yells out to Ennis:

DRIVER: Hey asshole, watch where you're goin'!

Ennis, heads to the drivers door and begins swingin' at the unknown driver. The driver, is surprised for a moment, then gets out of his car yelling at Ennis:
Jesus, - You stupid f**k!!
and he starts punching Ennis back, Ennis falls on his back....   :cb:

The all-out fight scene continues, Ennis, not as young as he once was, has met his match and gets a beating.

DRIVER: Goddamn. (throws Ennis at the truck, keeps punchin' finally Ennis falls and is held down while the bigger man drills home his point on the prone Ennis)

Scene fades to black, the BBM music comes in and the screen opens to an idyllic spring scene on the mountain. Jack and Ennis are horseback slowly riding through the high country. A second scene opens with the pair riding, silhouetted against the mountain backdrop, looking just like Randolph Scott and Joel McCrea in Ride the High Country. A few more quiet scenes of Jack and Ennis riding, together, but not speaking a word. Finally we see them in their riverside camp.

-Jack:-All I'm sayin' is, what the point of making it? If the taxes don't get it, the inflation will eat it all up.(he's near the riverside;he makes a pause and continues):You should see Lureen punchin' numbers in her adding machine. Hunting for extra zeros, her eyes gettin' smaller and smaller. It's like watchin' a rabbit tryin' to...squeeze into a snake hole with a coyote on its tail.

-Ennis:-That's some high class entertainment, if you ask me.


-Jack:-For what it's worth.

New scene:A dance hall in Chirlress.  Jack and loreen are at table with Lashawn and Randall Malone. Bubbly Lashawn is talking...

Lashawn: blah, blah, blah, ...and then I pledged Tri Delt at SMU,....blah, blah,  I'd end up in a poky little place like Childress!  But then I met ol' Randall here at an Aggie game... blah, blah, blah,...  So we been here a month, and he got the foreman job over at Roy Taylor's ranch.  Like it or not, here I am!

-Lashawn:-Pardon us.(They begin to dance together and she begins to talk again): Thank you for asking me to dance with you. I really appreciate that. Randall never does. Last time I did, I think it was our wedding.It's a good thing you and Lureen happened along when you did or else we'd still be stuck on the side of the road in that darn pickup. I told Randall we ought to take the car. Of course, he'd never listen to me. He wouldn't listen to me if he was goin' deaf tomorrow. I told him it'd take more than chewing gum and baling wire to fix that pickup. Well, he's never been very mechanical, though.(Bla,bla,bla...)

Jack smiles from time and time pretending he's listening to her babble,but his mind seems to be very far from there.

Next scene: we see Jack and Randall sitting on a bench near the ballroom door and waiting.They seem not to know what to say until Jack breaks the silence.

-Jack:-You ever notice how a woman will powder her nose before she goes to a party? And then she'll powder it again once the party's over? I mean, why powder your nose just to go home and go to bed?

-Randall : -Don't know. Even if I wanted to know, I couldn't get a word in with Lashawn long enough to ask. Woman talks a blue streak.

Jack looks really surprised and don't say a word.Luckily,the two women appear to "save" him from this awkward moment...

Ennis’s eyes gone bright with shock, mouth opening then closing again. “Love?” Ennis said finally, voice strangling in his throat.

Jack smiled sad. “Yeah, Ennis. Love.” Leaned forward and kissed Ennis’s temple, whispered, “What’d you think it was, all this time?”

Randall and Jack rise, go to their wives, and leave.

New scene: Alma Jr is waiting for Ennis to arrive.  She sees Ennis' pickup, smiles, and gets up, ready to go.

As Ennis parks, she sees that Cassie is with him...her smile fades.

Ennis calls out:  Hey there, Junior. You ready?
