Jack: Made two thousand dollars bull-ridin' that year, nearly starved.  Lureen's ol' man...makes serious money.  Farm machine business....'course he hates my guts.

Alma (in her nightgown and robe) walks quickly to the front window and looks out and sees Jack leaning on the side of his truck.

Alma (slowly):  You know, your friend could come in and have a cup of coffee.
Ennis (not meeting Alma's eyes):  He's from Texas
Alma:  Texans don't drink coffee?

Ennis picks Alma Jr. up and gives her a big kiss.  He hands Alma Jr. to Alma and puts one arm around Alma, gives her a quick hug and a kiss on the cheek.

Ennis:  see 'ya Sunday, ladies.

Ennis leaves in a hurry.  Alma, holding Alma Jr., looking sad starts to cry and wipes her tears away.

New scene:  Jack's truck driving in the mountains.  The truck stops near the edge of a cliff.  Jack and Ennis get out of the truck running (taking off their clothes as they run) toward the cliff.

Jack:   the last one in....

Jack and Ennis, both naked,  jump off the cliff into the river below.

Just sending a prayer of thanks.
The most difficult scene was the paragraph where, on the mountain, Ennis holds Jack and rocks back and forth, humming, the moment mixed with childhood loss and his refusal to admit he was holding a man.

- Annie Proulx -

From the vibration of the floorboard on which they both stood, Ennis could feel how hard Jack was shaking.

Jack:What if me and you had a little ranch together somewhere, little cow-and-calf operation, it'd be some sweet life. Hell, Lureen's old man, you bet he'd give me a down-payment if I'd get lost. Already more or less said it....

I told you it ain't gonna be that way . . .what I'm sayin', you got your wife and baby down in Texas, I got my life in Riverton.

Bottom line is, we're around each other, and if this thing grabs hold of us at the wrong place, at the wrong time, we're dead.

Scene switches from Ennis and Jack to a younger Ennis walking down a dirt trail with his older brother and his father.

Ennis:  There was these two old guys who ranched together down home, Earl and Rich.  They was the joke in town, even though they was pretty tough old birds.  They found Earl dead in an irrigation ditch.  They took a tire iron to him, spurred him up, drug him around by his dick till it pulled off...

young Ennis sees Earl's body and his eyes widen in shock
