Ennis (excited and a bit agitated) reads the post card:
"Friend this letter is long over due. Hope you get it.
Heard you was in Riverton. I'm coming thru on the 24th,
thought I'd stop and buy a beer. Drop me a line if you can,
 say if your there, Jack"
....then turns it over and looks at the address.  He caresses the postcard with his thumb.

New Scene.  At the Riverton Post Office.  Ennis fills out a postcard to send Jack.  Having filled in Jack's address in Childress, TX and the return address, Ennis writes 2 words for his message:  "You bet".  He then drops it off.

Next scene: at home,Ennis is waiting for Jack's arrival,very nervous.He's smoking and has several beer bottles near him.In another room,Alma is playing with Junior.

Alma :
You can color that one, too.

Junior :
I'll color the beach.

Ennis, wearing his BEST blue and white striped shirt, walks from the living room to the kitchen to get another beer.  As he walks back into the living room Alma says hopefully:  Maybe we can get a babysitter...take your friend to the Knife and Fork?

           More an' likely just go out an' get drunk . . . .
             (Sits down, looking out the window, takes a swig from the beer bottle, coughs)

           If he shows . . .
             (Lights a cigarette, takes a drag while lookin' out the window with concern)

Sound of a truck engine, Ennis goes to window, looks out, sees Jack gets out of his truck,
big smile lights up Ennis s' face,.......
Ennis: "Jack f**kin' Twist!!"

From the SS   (the description in the SS is so beautiful that I had to quote...) :
". A hot jolt scalded Ennis and he was out on the landing pulling the door closed behind him, took the stairs two and two. They seized each other by the shoulders, hugged mightily, squeezing the breath out of each other, saying, son of a bitch, son of a bitch, then, and easily as the right key turns the lock tumblers, their mouths came together, and hard....... his hat falling to the floor, stubble rasping, wet saliva welling, and the door opening and Alma looking out for a few seconds at Ennis's straining shoulders and shutting the door again and still they clinched, pressing chest and groin and thigh and leg together, treading on each other's toes until they pulled apart to breathe and Ennis, not big on endearments, said what he said
to his horses and daughters, little darlin." 
 sigh...<^(

Jack and Ennis embrace.

Jack: Son of a bitch...

There is a pause after the initial embrace.  Ennis looks around to see if anyone could see them, and then he shoves Jack up to the wall and kisses him passionately.  Slight pause.  Jack then shoves Ennis up to a post and kisses Ennis.

Ennis & Jack continue their frantic embrace, Alma peeks out the door, gets the shock of her life, closes the doors walks back to the kitchen shaken. Meanwhile down at the foot of the stairs Ennis tries to pull away from Jack, but like a starving man who can't get enough, continues to nuzzle Jack's face . . . mumbles:

ENNIS: Later . . .

They separate and head upstairs . . .

Jack doesn't enter the apartment, but rather stands in the hallway doorway with his eyes down.  He lifts his eyes for a moment and looks at Alma and quickly says:  Howdy.

ENNIS: Yeah, four years . . .

Jack:  Went down to Texas for rodeoin'...  That's how I met Lureen.  Made 2 000 dollars that year bullridin'... nearly starved.  Lureen's old man... he makes serious money... farm machine business...  'course he hates my guts...
