New Scene. Thanksgiving dinner at Monroe and Alma's house, dinner table with Monroe, Alma, Alma Jr., Jenny, and Ennis. Ennis all duded up with a good shirt, bolo tie, hair slicked back. Tension in the air as the family sits quietly, not much to talk about. Finally Alma Jr. looks at her mom nervously then looks at her dad, pipes up:
ALMA Jr.: Daddy tell about when you rode broncs in the rodeo.
Ennis looks a bit surprised, not very comfortable suddenly having been put on stage, a role he doesn't much like. But doesn't want to disappoint his daughters who he obviously adores. Looks at Alma for some visual approval, then begins a short tale:
ENNIS: Uh. Well, it's a short story honey, wus only about three seconds I was on that bronc. . . Uhm, next thing I knew I was flyin' through the air . . . Only I was no angel like you and Jenny here, (gently rubs Jenny's cheek and ear) I didn't have no wings. (Ennis looks back at Alma with a bit a pride that he done this but Monroe hasn't) An' that the story of my saddle bronc career.
Alma looks a bit frustrated or annoyed, Monroe cuts more turkey with an electric knife.
