Cassie (sits down beside Ennis and starts to take of her shoes): You're safe...  My feet hurt...

Ennis (with a look of sympathy on his face): It's hard work, is it?

Cassie(with a funny disgust gesture in her face):-Hug¡
(she puts her feet on Ennis lap).

Ennis:-What are you doing?

Cassie :-Tryin' to get a foot rub, dummy.

Ennis(beginning to rub them) :--All right. That good?

Ennis’s eyes gone bright with shock, mouth opening then closing again. “Love?” Ennis said finally, voice strangling in his throat.

Jack smiled sad. “Yeah, Ennis. Love.” Leaned forward and kissed Ennis’s temple, whispered, “What’d you think it was, all this time?”

Cassie: Uhuh...

New scene: a dance hall in Chirlress.  Jack and loreen are at table with Lashawn and Randall Malone. Bubbly Lashawn is talking...

Lashawn: ...and then I pledged Tri Delt at SMU, and I sure never thought I'd end up in a poky little place like Childress!  But then I met ol' Randall here at an Aggie game...  He was an animal husbandry major...  So we been here a month, and he got the foreman job over at Roy Taylor's ranch.  Like it or not, here I am!

Lureen (condescendingly):  You was Tri Delt?  I was Kappa Phi myself.

LaShawn: Well, even though we ain't quite sorority sisters, we may just have to dance wit ourselves, Lureen.  Our husbands ain't the least bit interested in dancing.  They ain't got a smidgen of rhythm between them.
[they were] both high school dropout country boys with no prospects, brought up to hard work and privation, both rough-mannered, rough-spoken, inured to the stoic life.

Lureen:(With a forlornness smile) It's funny isn't it? Husbands don't never seem to want to dance with their wives.
Turns to Jack: Why do you think that is Jack?

LASHAWN: Yes, thank you.

JACK: (to Randall) You mind? (No)

they start a slow dance to “I Don’t Want to Say Goodbye” by Teddy Thompson
(best part of this scene IMHO) . . .

LASHAWN: (chattering like a squirrel) Thank you for asking me to dance with you, I really appreciate that. Randal never does. It’s a good thing that you and Lureen happened along when you did or else we’d still be stuck along the side of the road in that darn pickup. I told Randall we oughta’ take the car, but he never listens to me, he wouldn’t listen to me if he was goin’ deaf tomorrow. I told him it takes more than chewin’ gum and balin’ wire to fix that old pickup, well he’s never been very mechanical though.

Jack listens patiently, smilin', not sayin' a word . . .

Next scene.Jack and Randall are sitting in a bench outside the ballroom. There's a little of tension between the both of them.Jack breaks the silence:

Jack :You ever notice how a woman will powder her nose before she goes to a party? And then she'll powder it again once the party's over? I mean, why powder your nose just to go home and go to bed?

Randall :-Don't know. Even if I wanted to know, I couldn't get a word in with Lashawn long enough to ask. Woman talks a blue streak.

Jack:-Lively little gal. You'll like working for Roy Taylor. He's solid, Roy.

Randall :-Yeah, Roy. He's a good old boy. He's got a little cabin down on Lake Kemp. Got a crappie house, little boat. Said I could use it whenever I want. We ought to go down there some weekend. Drink a little whiskey, fish some. Get away, you know?
Ennis’s eyes gone bright with shock, mouth opening then closing again. “Love?” Ennis said finally, voice strangling in his throat.

Jack smiled sad. “Yeah, Ennis. Love.” Leaned forward and kissed Ennis’s temple, whispered, “What’d you think it was, all this time?”

Lashawn and Lureen return from powdering their noses.  Lashawn is talking all the time.

Lashawn: ...when I was right out of SMU I coulda had ma pick of pretty much any job in North Dallas... so ma pick was Neiman Marcus... which was a disaster, because honey, where clothes is concerned, I got no resistance... I was spending more than I made... more than Randall ever will make... we come here thinkin ranchin was still big hats and Marlboros... boy, were we behind the times!

New scene:  Riverton, WY.  The home of Alma and Monroe.  Alma, Jr. (15 years old) is sitting on the porch waiting for Ennis to pick her up.  Ennis drives up in his pick-up.  Cassie is sitting in the passenger seat.

Alma, Jr. sees Cassie in the truck and looks disappointed but puts on a small smile for her father.

Ennis:  Hey, there, Junior.  You ready to go?

Scene at the Riverton bar.  Ennis is feeding the jukebox, and it starts playing Tammy Wynette's "D-I-V-O-R-C-E".

Our little boy is four years old and quite a little man
So we spell out the words we don't want him to understand
Like T.O.Y or maybe S.U.R.P.R.I.S.E
But the words we're hiding from him now
Tear the heart right out of me.

Our D.I.V.O.R.C.E becomes final today
Me and little J.O.E will be goin' away
I love you both and it will be pure H.E double L for me
Oh, I wish that we could stop this D.I.V.O.R.C.E.

Watch him smile, he thinks it Christmas
Or his 5th Birthay
And he thinks C.U.S.O.T.D.Y spells fun or play
I spell out all the hurtin' words
And turn my head when I speak
'Cause I can't spell a way this hurt
That's drippin' down my cheek.

Our D.I.V.O.R.C.E becomes final today
Me and little J.O.E will be goin' away
I love you both and it will be pure H.E double L for me
Oh, I wish that we could stop this D.I.V.O.R.C.E.

Cassie and Jr. are seated on a table.

Cassie: What do you think?  Your daddy's ever gonna see fit to settle down again?

Jr. (nervously fidgeting with her bottle of soda[?]): Don't know.  (She pauses significantly.)  Maybe he's not the marrying kind.

Cassie (with a slight edge): You don't think so?  ... Or you don't think I'm the one for him?

Jr.: You're good enough.

Cassie (smiles): You don't say much... but you get your point across!

Jr. (slightly embarassed): Sorry...  I didn't mean to be rude.

Ennis walks up to them.

Ennis:  Alright...

Cassie (pulling Ennis back up and leads him to the dance floor): You're stayin' on your feet, cowboy!

Ennis (to Jr.): Excuse me, darlin'...

Jr. watches them go.  She looks morose...  Ennis and Cassie start to dance...

New scene, Ennis and Jr. ridin' back to Alma's house in Ennis's pickup, Jr. lookin' pretty distant, something on her mind.

ENNIS: So I'll pick you an' Jenny up next weekend after church.

JR.: Fine.

ENNIS: You alright?

JR.: Yes.

Junior(a little redundant in speaking at first) :-Daddy, I was thinkin', what with the new baby and all...Ma and Monroe have been awful strict on me. More on me than Jenny even. I was thinkin', maybe I could...Maybe I could come stay with you. I'd be an awful good help, I know I would.

Ennis :-Now, you know I ain't set up for that. With the roundup comin'...I won't ever be home.

Junior :-It's all right, Daddy.

Ennis :-I'm not sayin' that I wouldn't...

Junior :-It's all right. I understand.

Ennis :-Well, see you on Sunday, then.

Junior :-Bye.

Ennis :-Bye, sweetheart.

Conclusion of this important scene with no dialogue:

Ennis watches Jr. get out of the truck and run back to the house.
Knows there's nothing he can do to fix her disappointment.
Slowly drives away thinkin' - about . . . ?

New Scene:  Wyoming mountains.  It is nighttime.  Ennis and Jack are sitting in a small lawnchairs near a campfire.  Jack is smoking a joint.

Jack:  Gonna snow for sure tonight...

Ennis looks up at the sky and then at Jack and nods his head slightly in agreement.

Jack: Lureen's good at making hard deals in the machinery business, but as far as our marriage goes, we could do it over the phone.
Pauses, takes a drink straight from a bottle of whiskey.
I kinda got a thing goin' with a ranch foreman's wife over in Childress.... continues laughing
I'm scared I'll get shot by Lureen or the husband , each time I slip off to see her...... chuckles .

New scene, next morning on the mountain, boys are packin' up the trucks getting ready to leave. Jack goes to his truck, opens door, repeats his same stance from '63 when they split up:

JACK: I guess I'll head up on to Lightning Flat, see the folks for a day or two.

Jack looks at Ennis hopin' for some kinda' something . . . gets what he doesn't expect. Ennis, nervously messes with the truck trim, not eager to say what he has to.

November? What in hell happened to August? Christ, Ennis, you had a fu**in' week to say some little word about this (Ennis is silent) And why's it we're always in the friggin' cold weather? We oughta go south, where it's warm. We oughta go to Mexico.

(Jack, sad and angry for moments, is turning his back to Ennis, who remains at some distance):

-Ennis :Mexico? Hell, Jack, you know me. About all the travellin' I ever done is around a coffee pot, looking for the handle.(Jack keeps in silence).Come on, Jack. Lighten up on me. We can hunt in November. Kill us a nice elk. I'll try if I can get Don Wroe's cabin again. We had a good time that year, didn't we?

-Jack(thinking out loud more than talking) :There's never enough time, never enough...
