Lureen (talking as if she was reciting by heart) :
Oh, yeah. Jack was pumpin' up a flat on the truck out on the back road, when the tire blew up. The rim of the tire slammed into his face, broke his nose and jaw and knocked him unconscious on his back. By the time somebody come along, he'd drowned on his own blood. He was only 39 years old.

Ennis remains ashtonished,as if what he has just heard was a drema,or better a nightmare.He doesn't answer,he has no words...

-Lureen:-Hello? Hello? Hello.

Ennis returns to the bitter reality,although he's on the verge of crying.

Ennis:-Was he buried down there?

Lureen: We put a stone up...he was cremated like he wanted. Half his ashes was interred here, the rest was sent up with his folks. He used to say he wanted his ashes scattered on Brokeback Mountain, but I wasn’t sure where that was..I thought Brokeback Mountain might be around where he grew up. Knowing Jack it might be some pretend place...where bluebirds sing and there’s a whiskey spring.

ENNIS: No ma'am, we wus herdin' sheep . . . on Brokeback one summer . . . . back in '63.

As Ennis reveals this to Lureen, we see her face in close-up.
She says nothing at first, but a faint little groan escapes her lips
as the realization of the true meaning of Brokeback to Jack becomes clear to her.
Tears well up in her eyes,
Finally she says:

LUREEN: Well, he said it was his favorite place. I thought he meant to get drunk, he drank a lot.

-Lureen : -They'll be there till the day they die.

-Ennis : -I thank you for your time. I sure am sorry. We was good friends.

-Lureen : -Get in touch with his folks. I suppose they'd appreciate it if his wishes was carried out. About the ashes, I mean.

She hangs on the phone almost abruptly.Ennis remains some moments silent,as trying to understand what has happenned still...

New scene: Lightning Flat, Wyoming. Ennis' old pickup truck pulls up at the Twist homestead. Ennis gets out, looks around. Jack's ma looks out the door window, then comes out, stands alone welcoming Ennis. Scene moves indoors, we see Ennis sitting quietly with old man Twist at the kitchen table.

From the kitchen Ma Twist asks: Want a cup a' coffee don't ya, piece of cherry cake?

Ennis: Yes ma'am, I'll have a cup of coffee, but I can't eat no cake just now.

(Ennis keeps on talking,but words barely go out from his throat)...I feel awful bad about Jack.(to Mrs.Twist when she gaves him the cup of coffee): Thank you. I can't begin to tell you how bad I feel. I knew him a long time. I come by to say that if you want me to take his ashes up there on Brokeback, like his wife said he wanted to, then I'll be happy to.

Jack's father spits in his cup, then says angrily: Tell you what...I know where Brokeback Mountain is...he thought he was too goddamn special to be buried in the family plot.

John Twist continues his vitriol . . . .

TWIST: Jack used to say . . . Ennis Del Mar - he used to say . . . I'm gonna' bring him up here one a' these days - an' we'll lick this damn ranch into shape.

Ennis smiles slightly at these words, looks Twist right in the eye with this revelation.

Had sum half-baked notion the two a' you was gonna' move up here, build a cabin, help run the place . . .

Ennis now looks down, realizing that Jack's "sweet life" was going to be right here.
Twist spits into his coffee cup (again)

Then this spring, . . got another fella' gonna' come up here with 'em . . . build a place, help run the ranch. Some ranch neighbor a' his from down in Texas, gone split up with his wife an' come back here. So he says. But like most a Jack's ideas, never come ta' pass . . .

Ennis suddenly turns ashen, realizes the depth and meaning behind John Twist's words.

Slowly, gently, a hand from above comes down to rest on Ennis's shoulder.

It's Mrs Tiwst.Ennis looks at her at the verge of crying.

-Mrs.Twist (in a sweet tone):-I kept his room like it was when he was a boy. I think he appreciated that. You are welcome to go up to his room, if you want.

-Ennis : -Yeah, I'd like that. Thank you.

New scene. Ennis goes up the stairs of the Twist home. He turns right and enters jack's room. He surveys it at a glance. The austerity and melancholy of the place is overpowering. He looks at the items on Jack's desk (rocks, school books, etc.) and picks up a toy figurine of a cowboy (reminding us of an earlier one carved by Ennis). Suddenly, tears well up in Ennis's eyes. He needs air. He opens the window and props it up and sits down, gazing out...

From the ShortStory:

The window looked down on the gravel road stretching south and it occurred to him that for Jack's growing up years that was the only road he knew.

Ennis sits for a just moment looking out the window, seems to regain his composure. Then the scene cuts to a view from inside Jack's closet looking out at Ennis. He turns his gaze from out the window and looks across the room into the open closet as if he hears something. Gets up from the stool and in his slow limbering gait walks over to the closet where he first looks at (and feels) one of Jack's old coats, then sees Jack's old boots in the corner, kneels down picks one up briefly, examining it as if to see if Jack were inside. Ennis notices a little nook in the corner of the closet and a shirt hanging hidden there . . .

For his face,we see how surprised is Ennis when he finds Jack's shirt and more still when he realises that,inside it,there's his own shirt,the one he believed he had lost in BBM.He catches them smelling Jack's,as if was trying to find his scent on it;he takes an sleeve and squeezes it with passion,meanwhile an almost inaudible "I love you" comes from his lips.

New scene: Ennis has come down the stairs and is holding the 2 shirts. As he walks past Pa Twist he clutches the shirts, fearing that he would not be allowed to keep them. He makes a gesture to Ma Twist, seeming to ask if he could have them. She gently nods her head and fetches a paper bag. She slips the shirts into the bag, pausing briefly before she puts them in.

Ennis is still so full of emotion he can barely speak, eyes reddened from the events upstairs. Looks first at Ma' Twist who is clutching her throat, then past her to John Twist as he speaks, then back to Ma' Twist with a deep look of knowing resignation.

ENNIS: Yessir.

JACK'S MOTHER: You come back and see us again.

Ennis looks into her eyes and acknowledges her request. Turns, picks up his hat and exits the front door. Ma' Twist follows him to the door. Once outside, and away from John Twist, Ennis turns around to Mrs. Twist, gestures with the sack of shirts:

ENNIS: Thank you ma'am for everything.

The two exchange another long moment of eye contact before Ennis slowly turns, heads for his pickup. Away from the house Ennis pauses briefly to take in the landscape of the place, glances up to Jack's room and the open window. Then continues his journey home.

Next scene.Ennis is putting a number on his mail box when,suddenly,the noise of a car coming catches his attention.He looks at it to see that it's Junior in a brand new car.He approaches to her.

-Ennis : -Hey there, Junior.

-Junior : -Hey, Daddy.

-Ennis : -Come here.

They embrace.

-Junior : -Like the car?

Ennis: I thought you was seein' Troy.

Junior: Troy!?! Daddy, that was two years ago...

Ennis: Is Troy still playin' baseball?

Junior: I don't know what Troy's doin'...I'm seeing Kurt now...

New scene. Inside Ennis's trailer. Alma Jr. takes off her sweater and looks around while Ennis gets her some refreshment. Alma Jr. is struck by the austerity of Ennis's surroundings.

Alma Jr.: Daddy, you need more furniture...

JR: Yeah daddy, he loves me.

Ennis, after looking into Jr's. eyes for a moment, turns away to the window, his gaze becomes choked, distant.
He seems to be thinking of his love, Jack.
