frances, you just reminded me that I would want a screencap of this scene...  Beautifully said.

Dear Patriot1.  Although I cannot see the pix at the moment, I thank you and am hoping to enjoy these later!

So many beautiful scenes in this movie.  So many impossible choices...

I love all of the scenes mentioned here.

Jack: That look of love in his eyes after Ennis rides away in the flashback scene. He was so content in that love-so very much in love with Ennis.

Ennis- it's a sad one. When he finds the shirts. To me when he realizes what they are it looks like he could vomit- like so many emotions come surging through him all at once and it's too much for him. The way he puts his hand on the shirt and then embraces his Jack.  :\'(

Interesting.  Because these are the two scenes in the movie when I invariably shed tears.

Oh me too! The same goes for the divorce scene when Jack is driving away. It's hard to pick one scene because they all speak for themselves and so powerfully.
“What Jack remembered and craved in a way he could neither help nor understand was the time that distant summer on Brokeback when Ennis had come up behind him and pulled him close, the silent embrace satisfying some shared and sexless hunger."

Just when I thought I might go one day without a tear shed for our boys, you all bring up again the most moving moments, little bruises to the heart.     :\'(   I love all your choices and they've brought back the sweetest and most bitter-sweet of memories.   ^f^

My choices (at this moment, anyway     :-\\ )

Ennis:  I have to agree with everyone who picked the waiting for Jack before the reunion kiss scene.  His nerves and anticipation just vibrate out of his body.  Has a lover ever been awaited with such intense longing before???  All possibilities are before him at this moment and all possibilities start and end with his Jack.

Jack: The Thanksgiving scene.  It's like watching the fall out of the divorce misunderstanding and his going to Mexico. I think here we see the way Jack has been irreversibly altered by those events.  He has been tempered like steel, and now will not bend to the world at every push; he's learned to push back.  It's heartbreaking but inevitable.

And FlwrChld, you speak such truth .. how could anyone not love them???

Tpe ... you have again started us on another emotional path.  Thank you!  :-*

Your Jack scene is quite beautifully articulated.  "He has been tempered like steel...".  This is quite beautiful.  Perfect.

I agree-  perfect!

I really found it surpsiring that I am most moved by these two scenes when I was at the theatres.  Because, they are so quiet -- in a certain sense.  No big dramatics.  No big emotional outpourings.  And yet... And yet...

The first is so beautifully contented.  The second is so serene in deep sadness.

tpe, I think it's the quieter scenes I tend to respond to more. So many times, the loud, overdramatic ones feel forced. Whereas nothing felt forced in this movie and they both expressed so much through their eyes and their posture. Sheer gold across the board.

To a degree it was a movie about silence, which in itslef makes it unusual. When Jack or Ennis were alone on the mountain there was always the mountain and the wind, and even when they were together. Ang managed to identify them with forces and manifestations of nature, which made them universal to us.

The silences are so eloquent that they are more beautiful than words.  A look is pregrant with meaning.  A gaze becomes greater than any termof endearment.

I agree, silence is what makes BBM so universal.  If words were to replace this, it would become  more restrictive, more narrow.

With silence, their love is made palpable to the exigencies of the heart.

And I also like the scenes where they're looking to (toward) each other on the mountain; Jack from above and Ennis from camp. I thought Ang Lee beautifully brought to life this passage from the book:

"During the day Ennis looked across a great gulf and sometimes saw Jack, a small dot moving across a high meadow as an insect moves across a tablecloth; Jack, in his dark camp, saw Ennis as night fire, a red spark on the huge black mass of mountain."
For a moment in our lives. Forever in our hearts.

With all the insightful words and beautiful screencaps in this thread, it's like seeing BBM all over again, with the usual teary response.  And this is WITHOUT the scenes of them together!  As FlwrChld said earlier ... pure gold!

<^(

And I love what you said about those scenes of them looking off toward each other in the distance, FlwrChld ... there is a poignancy to those scenes that is so very sweet.  Good choice and description, thank you!

Jack - after the divorce scene.

Ennis - eating his pie alone.

All i can really say is that i find the sadness of both these scenes so intense, and so heartbreakingly real it is almost impossible to watch, but even more impossible to tear eyes away.

Thanke everyone.

That Pie scene: and to think it was meant as a "relief" scene after the confrontation of the last meeting!

The pie scene: it is affecting to see the utter lack of appetite with which Ennis eats the pie... Perhaps he resorts to eating sweets because he can't talk himself into eating anything more substantial... He is in dire straits.

Concerning the silences that welshwitch brought up: Remember when JG was on Leno. The clip chosen was the goodbye outside the trailer after the summer on Brokeback. JG said that the movie was as much about what they don't say to each other as about what they do say.

Great thread, thanks tpe :)

My favourite Jack without Ennis scene is quite an easy choice for me, but it might be a bit controversial for some. It's the whole bit where he meets Lureen. I think they would have made a really good couple if they had met in some sort of parallell universe where Jack wasn't gay, they look good together, and there's definitely a spark of chemistry between them. I know part of the attraction for Jack was her dad's money, but he was still interested enough to ask the barman about her in the first place. Of course, Lureen falls under his spell the minute she sets eyes on him, but Jack must have been used to having women fall at his feet, so I think it was more than just being flattered that she fancied him, there was definitely an attraction there, maybe not in a totally sexual way, and certainly not even comparable to Ennis, but Jack is drawn to her. Another thing I like is how Jack goes, as someone summed it up perfectly on another thread, from "predator" to "prey", with Lureen. They both have the same go-get-'em approach to men, which is probably part of the attraction for Jack, and it's so sweet, but also kind of funny and sad (not to mention seriously sexy! :d) ;)) all at once,to see him looking so nervous and unsure of himself, but still managing to cover it up and come across as Mr Stud-you-like, with that "fast or slow..." line <^(
But as much as I love these scenes, the one that gets me is the one of Jack looking desolately into the distance when he's dancing with Lureen. I can't get over how brilliantly shot that scene is, with Lureen gazing into Jack's eyes, mentally screaming at him to kiss her, Jack tilting his head slightly, the back of Lureen's head, and then, when you expect to see them kissing, instead you see Jack staring into the distance, wishing it was Ennis he was holding :\'( :\'( :\'(

Sorry to go on about that scene, but you did ask... ;) :)

I'll keep my Ennis choices brief, mainly because it's all been said already, and far better than I ever could :)
I can't choose between waiting for Jack before the reunion kiss, and finding the shirts. Just thinking about the latter can bring tears to my eyes, and the former is just adorable from start to finish :)

There was some open space between what he knew and what he tried to believe, but nothing could be done about it, and if you can't fix it you've got to stand it.

There's a Byron poem that contains the lines:
              When we two parted
              In silence and tears,
              Half broken-hearted
              To sever for years
that  i think of when they are parting after the summer of Brokeback.

The eloquent communication that comes from silence is oneof the pardoxes the movie exemplifies superbly.

I have always found Jack's face superlatively beautiful and vulnerable at that moment when he hands Lureen her hat ("ma'am...")  And who does not melt when he look's at the aggressive Lureen approach him and demand a dance (the "who, me?" type of look.)  Who can miss the deep significance in his look when he dances with Lureen?   And what about the controlled desire that informs his face when he makes love to her in the car?  Finally, who does not feel the wound and isolation when he is left out by Lureen's family when Bobby is born?

These scenes define Jack as much as Lureen.  They are spendid sequences.  They inform us of Jack's inner life.  What we see is gentle, unsure, and wanting so much to love and be loved.

Splendid.

Is it not so very ironic that in this parting scene, they are seen together, BUT THEY ARE REALLY NOT TOGETHER.  They do not connect.  They refuse to connect.  It is ironic that each one is alone when they are together in this one scene...

And I always thought there was just something so perfect about the posture (for lack of a better descriptive?) of both of them as well as the timing in the way they turned from each other to go; Jack to get in his truck and Ennis to walk away. I don't really know how to describe what I mean, but it catches me every time.

Let me define then these two scenes of a painful, so exquisite balance.

For Jack:  When he drives away and looks at the receding Ennis from the rear-view mirror.  Eyes of infinite regret...

For Ennis: When he crumples in the alley, full of repressed love and desire.

And that's what it is to deny what you are, or be afraid to try to attain what you know is what you most need. One can't confront himself, and the other doesn't know how to confront him. They're each sealed in their own little capsule, hurtling through the darkness of space, with only emtiness and cold outside.

Oh I am so loving reading everyone's choices of Ennis and Jack scenes....I think I will still stick with mine, but that's not to say I dont agree with the descriptions of the others everyone here has chosen....they are all wonderful too.

I love what you say flwrchild about this scene, because I have often been struck by how they stood, or held themselves, in certain scenes (the outside aguirre's trailer being a prime one, but that is for another thread), and wasnt it incredible how their posture defined who they were?  Jack was looking at Ennis head on, he was the one who instigated the "gonna do this again next summer".  Whereas contrast that to Ennis, who is leaning on Jack's truck, side on to Jack, head down, hardly looking at Jack.  And then the timing as you say when they get to go.....Ennis, obviously not wanting to go, but not knowing what to do, pulls himself up from the truck and walks away, and once Ennis has done that, Jack follows suit by getting in to the truck, because again, what else can he do?

Sorry, I dont know if I have explained myself well here either flwrchild, but basically, I get what you were saying and it gets me every time...its the utter heartbreak of the situation.

This is probably o/t to, tpe...sorry.     ~)
