I love the scene when Jack and Ennis have set up camp and we see Jack (the first night alone) sitting up smoking looking down on the camp most likely thinking about Ennis. It is at this point so full of hope, so ripe with possibilities and so laden with thoughts of how the story might develop......and above all...so peaceful...

And it is quite a pendant to the scene where Ennis looks up at Jack as Ennis washes the coffee pot by the stream.  This is not as peaceful as the Jack scene, but you see Ennis with an anxious look in his face as he sees Jack high up with the sheep.  You know from that look that Ennis is starting to care for Jack.

great point.........ah if only the movie stayed there........

Yes, sometimes I wish that the first part of the movie never ended...

Just remembered another Ennis scene that I love. It's just before Alma comes into their bedroom and they have the "can't we move to town" chat when Ennis first comes into the bedroom in his pjs and vest ( :d) ), flexing his neck 'cos he's had a really hard day at work and then he sits down on the edge of the bed, worn out. I love it because he's working so hard to try to make ends meet and provide for Alma and the girls, when we all know his heart is hundreds of miles away.

You just got me with that one Lindsey....every time I see him in this scene, I just know he's thinking about Jack.  Probably hoping and wishing that the arms wrapping around him are Jack's, not Alma's.

THe pendant to this scene is Jack's dance with Lureen, where Jack's blank stare most probably indicates that he is thinking of Ennis.  So many wonderful bookends in this film... Thanks all.

okay, so I'm a little late replying to this thread  *^)

Just watched BBM again last night, so I'm fresh...my favorite scenes with Only-Ennis or Only-Jack are:

Ennis:  The scene where Ennis is in Jack's room at his parents ranch BEFORE he finds the shirts.  That whole scene just tore my heart out.  When Ennis is sitting looking out the window always makes me cry buckets.

Jack:  The scene the year after Brokeback where Jack goes to Aguirre for a job.  After Aguirre tells Jack, 'ain't got no work for you," Jack turns back and asks Aguirre if Ennis had been by.  Jack Twist is my hero.  &**)
[they were] both high school dropout country boys with no prospects, brought up to hard work and privation, both rough-mannered, rough-spoken, inured to the stoic life.

Ditto. :)
Very nice scene choices.

One of the wcenes no-one ever talks about is the short one where Ennis is working on  the road. It shows him fdoing an uncongenial job, presumably to support his family, and working with a boring character who talks incessantly about nothing much in an attempt to be funny - nothing like Ennis and the greatest possible contrast with Jack. If this is the kind of steady work Alma wanted Ennis to do, no wonder he wasn't very keen.

Oddly, too, while I'm a Jake fan, I don't see Jack as anything like as heroic as Ennis. sure, Jack nearly starved, according to his own account, while he was rodeoing for a couple of years, but after he married Lureen, his material needs were well catered for, and as can be seen in his scenes with Ennis he always had good clothes, recent trucks, etc. ennis, by contrast, stuck with his wife and children, stuck with the badly-paid tiring temporary jobs so that he could see Jack periodically, stuck with his child-support payments, and apart from meeting Jack appears never to have had much pleasure or even comfort in his life - even from Cassie.

For me, Ennis is a great anti-hero.  And Jack is ...  a sort of great anti-beloved.

If you put anti-hero and anti-beloved together, what do you get? Anti-matter?

 *o) again.

It's true that the two of them have some sort of effect on each other - the scenes where either is alone/with other people are much less powerful than those where they are together, even those early scenes where they're doing mundane things like making a camp.

I do agree.  But there is so much beauty in many of the scenes where one is absent.  IN a sense, even in those scenes, you FEEL the other is present...

Welshwitch - I think they're both heroic (love them both to pieces)...I just like the fact that Jack, after Aguirre verbally slapped him, TURNED back and asked for what he really wanted.  In term s of personality, I am more like Ennis, but I wish I had more of Jack's determination.

Another one-on the mountain..when they really started to feel/miss each other IMHO...

"During the day Ennis looked across a great gulf and sometimes saw Jack, a small dot moving across a high meadow as an insect moves across a tablecloth; Jack, in his dark camp, saw Ennis as night fire, a red spark on the huge black mass of mountain. "

"What Jack remembered and craved in a way he could neither help nor understand was the time that distant summer on Brokeback when Ennis had come up behind him and pulled him close, the silent embrace satisfying some shared and sexless hunger."
"I miss you so much I can hardly stand it."

Yes.  The movie realized this beautifully.

Another one of those moments that was so perfectly transformed from written word to visual image in this movie in a way that is so rarely (if ever?) achieved in film.....

And I thought they did it in such a naturalistic fashion.  They did not put the two scenes back to back.  And the fact that they showed Jack first was consistent, given that the movie seemed to represent Jack as the more obviously interested of the two.

Yep, just perfect.....wonderful film....

And hope it's not too OT: I was very moved by the film the first time but my brain took a while to absorb it. It wasn't till the second viewing that I realized there are no wasted moments in this movie. None! Every car, every line, every person, every tree is there for a reason! Amazing.

It ran for more than 2 hours, but I doubt that you can cut that much from the current version without losing a sense of balance such as the one illustrated here, where Jack and Ennis express longing for each other.

OOT: unless I had just forgotten that we already had such a thread, it would be interesting to start a new topic on what scenes do you think (if any) could be removed or added to the movie.  But this may go into dangerous/contentuous new ground.  :)

I'll have to check that thread out. I may need to be restrained first though, just in case. ;)

And to get back on topic, the scenes with Jack at the rodeo are fun for me. Watching his disappointment with that first ride they show him doing. Then the contrast of how pleased he is with the second one. Enthusiastic like a kid. You just can't help being happy for him.
