I'll have to check that thread out. I may need to be restrained first though, just in case. ;)

And to get back on topic, the scenes with Jack at the rodeo are fun for me. Watching his disappointment with that first ride they show him doing. Then the contrast of how pleased he is with the second one. Enthusiastic like a kid. You just can't help being happy for him.

So true- he's just like a little boy there.  :)

I also thought he was most wonderfully shy and boyish at the bar when Lureen approaches him for a dance.  What a wonderful expression in that face -- you sense that he is abashed and speechless -- like a little boy, most certainly.  Thinking of it right now fills me with admiration for that singular look of shyness and pleasure combined.

This will not please you, tpe, but I also see an element of calculation in the expression while he is waiting for Lureen to come over.

It may not please me, but it is a valid opinion, nonetheless.  This is what makes these exchanges more interesting.

I clearly read it a bit differently, although I did sense a hint of calculation.  I thought the way I did because he clearly did not have the guts (as Lureen had) to approach Lureen like the other cowboys, even though he was certainly interested...  He seemed to have lacked a great deal of self confidence with women.  Perhaps we know why...

He may also have felt diffident about approaching the local little rich girl, having just been told that her father was wealthy. Or he may have been nervous about approaching her anyway - I can't imagine his upbringing had brought him into contact with many wealthy people.

He doesn't appear exactly nervous in the car and he got her pregnant quickly enough, so his expression could just be a reflection of his social uncertainty rather than of his lack of interest in women.

Another old topic I just discovered...

The best Ennis-only scene for me would have to be when he finds the shirts.  I defy ANYONE to watch that scene and not be affected emotionally.

A Jack-only scene is harder for me to choose, 'cause I'm such a "Jack girl"  :) - but I do like the scene where he dances with Lureen; you can tell his mind is a thousand miles away, as he closes his eyes and moves to the song... :(

Very good choices.

A Jack only scene:

In the beginning, when he was alone with the sheep at night, smoking a cigarette. He looks down the mountain where he see the small flicker of light from the camp fire.  He strain to look closer.  Yeah, he must have said to himself, "He still there."

Here is the excact line from the SS , when they really started to feel/miss  each other IMHO...

"During the day Ennis looked across a great gulf and sometimes saw Jack, a small dot moving across a high meadow as an insect moves across a tablecloth; Jack, in his dark camp, saw Ennis as night fire, a red spark on the huge black mass of mountain. "

I like that, "started to feel each other", they did, didn't they?  And you got this impression without a word being spoken.  It was quiet, so unexpected.

Oh, yeah, for sure, it was like magic,as all the time up in the mountain was ,
I prefer to call it mountain time.

And don't forget the trace of a smile on Jack's face when he catches sight of Ennis's fire.  That smile was enough to light up the whole world.

well...he definitely light up my world....that's definitely my favourite jack scene too. as for ennis, it will have to be the beginning where they were supposed to meet aguirre for the first time. he look so vulnerable then...sometimes i just feel like hugging him

That certainly was a beautiful look.  And I do like his "nonlook": when he tried to avoid Jack's gaze the first time they set eyes on each other outside the trailer...

oh man, u're so right! i love that too...and i love it when jack looked at ennis from the mirror. its like he's checking him out, there was an unspoken attraction then, i guess....jack is always the bolder one. he continue looking at ennis long after he looked away. jack caught my attention from the very first scene

Technically, the opening scene is a scene involving Jack AND Ennis.  But I would claim that they should really be set apart in that opening scene. They seem to be lostt in their own worlds even as they try to figure out each other.

For Ennis: his shuffling nervously and hiding himself under his hat at the first sign of interest on Jack';s part.

For Jack: his looking at the mirror -- seemingly engrossed in shaving, but actually trying to fathom Ennis.

THis is a scene where both are together, and yet apart.
