I think more than anything, we just want Jack and Ennis to be happy, whether that's with someone else or with each other.

The only way is to go with the love of your life - anything else is second or third best. So no, I want Ennis and Jack to be happy together. (And I'll keep watching the film until they are!)

That's the reason I still watch Gone With the Wind....hope against hope they will be together. O0

Yes, of course I would rather them be happy with each other rather than with somebody else.

I like Randall.  However, the love that Jack and Ennis shared might have always posed a threat to Randall had Jack lived and attempted to move on.  I know it's just speculation at this point, but I can't ignore an important fact.  By moving back to Lightening Flat, Jack would have been much closer to Ennis.  Chances are Jack and Ennis would run into each other from time to time.  I believe the temptation to dump Randall at the slightest invitation from Ennis would be very great.  As much as I like Randall, I don't see where there could have been a solid future with Jack if Ennis was anywhere in the vicinity.

City Slickin' Cowboy (I love your name and your picture, by the way!  8) for the very reasons you say here, my heart goes out to Randall. He seems like such a sensitive man and would certainly be rejected if Ennis were to come back into Jack's life.

I would love to know more about his and Jack's relationship. Purely for educational purposes, mind you.   ::) I don't know why Randall has so caught my attention except that I really think he would care a great deal for Jack. And I love the way he looks---big guy with kind eyes.

I thonk I feel sorry for him being landed with LaShawn - but thenmaybe he married her for camouflage. I wonder what sort of a future lay ahead for him?

This is true.  Randall deserves sympathy at least on this score. It is perhaps bad enough to drive any guy (gay or straight) insane.

I did'nt mean to say that Randall purposely or knowingly tried to break Jack and Ennis up, literally as I don't even know if he knew about Ennis but he was in  the right place at the right time when the "opportunity presented itself for an ongoing  affair  with Jack.Lookin at it from this context, the chance  to be with Jack was there and Randall took it. Wether it contributed to causing  a split between J&E is another story. Thanks for lettin me clarify.

It will be interesting to see if there is anything extra about Randall on the De-Lux version.

It would have been interesting if the story could have touched on Randall and Jack a little more.  It would have at least allowed us to better speculate if he could have stood a real chance with Jack in Wyoming.  Btw...I practically drooled over Randall in the theater. :d)

And I can just picture you Cowboy, drooling over Randall in the theatre,

Yes, it's hard to discuss his character when what we see of him is so bried and he has so little direct interaction with Jack. But at least he makes the running this time and isn;t in denial like Ennis.

I wonder if Randall had more scenes -- other than the one shown in the movie and the cut scene showing him and Jack embracing. Perhaps his character loomed larger in some early stage of the filming -- as a sort of anti-Ennis.  But this is all pure speculation.  I share Saul's hope that more will be revealed in the deleted scenes of the January edition.

You know the two men at the gas station that are in the theatre trailer but not in the present film? They say that was part of a scene with Jack and Randall.

Hmmm.... maybe those mechanics saw Jack & Randall together kissing, and that's what spurned the tireiron scene...  :\'(

You might have something there DirtBiker. "This thing" might have got them anyway, or Jack at least who prefered action to safety.

I didn't realize there was cut scene involving Randall and Jack.  Something to look forward to in the new DVD.

Well have to see. They may just restore the cut scenes, or some of them, or give new material. Who knows?

I really hope they include ALL deleted material, even if some may appear to be too disjointed from the rest...

I curious to see any deleted scene with Randall.  I don't think it will change how I see Ennis and Jack, but it may help me see a bigger picture of Jack's life in those later years.

It would also be interesting to see how Ang Lee and the script writers envisioned Randall at an earlier stage -- whether they envisioned him as a rival to Ennis.  Perhaps Proulx may have objected...  Still, it is interesting to see anything that casts light on the evolution of the film version.

Cute!  I can totally see why you'd be attracted to Randall, CSC. And I would love to see more of him in the dvd. I still think Randall would be a good friend for Jack.

Randall seemed to be a big loveable teddy bear.  I could easily ignore the fact that he wasn't very "mechanical" per LaShawn.  I'm sure there were other things he was quite skilled in fixing.

As tpe mentioned earlier, it will be interesting to see what Ang Lee may have invisioned with regards to Randall.  I'm already getting anxious waiting for the updated DVD package.

I am going to wait and see what the de-lux version has. Then I will get it when it is available in Europe rather than having it imported from a USA address.

I am beginning to think that Randall could have been developed as a much more interesting figure  -- too bad he is just too shadowy in the finished version.  But he could have been developed as an interesting foil to Ennis.  Randall also seems to be quite laconic, or is it the contrast with LaShawn that is making me say this?  He is certainly much more forward than Ennis.  And perhaps less conflicted...  I wonder if that attracted Jack initially to him...

Compared to LaShawn Randall was quite laid back in his demeanor.  I imagine having lived in slightly more populated areas Randall had the opportunity to shed a few fears he may have harbored that dealt with approaching men romantically or just sexually.  The fact that he wasn't small in stature may have eased some of his fears for his safety in a one on one situation.  There was certainly potential to develop his character as a significant threat to Jack and Ennis's relationship.
