Randall just looked c*cky (ok, I didn't put that asterisk in there) to me.  But at least he was willing & Jack wanted that.  With Randall, Jack wouldn't have to always make the first move (I know, Ennis did make some first moves), which I imagine can be frustrating.  And yes, he was a contrast to Ennis, which was good.

To make peace with you, CSC, and others who like Randall, I'm going to try not to make negative comments about him anymore.  At least he gave Jack what he wanted, so that is something positive.   ^f^  Suffice it to say, I prefer Ennis with Jack.

I suspect we all prefer Ennis with Jack.  I suspect that Jack preferred Ennis to Randall.

Randall was indeed a contrast to Ennis.  Perhaps this was something that Jack appreciated to a certain extent.

I keep changing my mind about Randall.  Hated him the first time I saw the movie -- I think it was the shock of Jack actually ever being interested in someone other than Ennis.  Then, as I saw the movie more and could think more rationally, I realized Randall actually has nothing at all to do with Ennis.  He's just a man with needs that aren't being met by little miss chatterbox, sees someone who may be of a like mind, and goes for it.  He's not to be censored, IMO, since we don't know him well enough to judge him fairly.

It would have been interesting if Ms. Proulx had extended this story a little longer.  Randall's part in Jack's life could have been explored a little more in depth.  Of course the inclusion could have added 30 more minutes to the film.  That in itself could have impacted the public's reception of the film.  So many what if's.

Right, CSC.  No use in second-guessing Ms Proulx at this date.
I just don't think we have enough evidence to think of Randall as a real horndog, as some people seem to suggest.  I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt.  I think he just was attracted to Jack ( Who wouldn't be????), and put out feelers to see if Jack might be receptive.  Nothing wrong with that.

Interesting you chose the phrase horndog. ;D  When I look at the scene where Randall and Jack met I see Randall as someone whose instincts told him that Jack was a possibility.  He probably detected that Jack was not that into Lureen, which isn't unusual in couples.  In addition he probably noticed that Jack probably was not paying any noticeable attention to the other females in the vicinity also.  Easy math perhaps for Randall.

By "horndog" I just meant someone who was interested in only one thing   --- ya know?  Some forum members have come down real hard on Randall, suggesting that he was hitting on Jack and there was something wrong with that.  I don't see it that way.  He may have been hitting on Jack, but, as you said, he may have been picking up vibes from Jack, or may have noticed Jack's boredom with Lureen.  That may be why Jack so quickly asked Randall's wife to dance.

I think Randall could have wanted something that extended beyond 'ya know.'  A special buddy perhaps?  After all, he invited Jack to a quiet cabin and lake where they could have done a few other activities in addition to..ya know. ;)

Yes, we should at least be sympathetic for the sort of life he leads with LaShawn.  I know it would drive me insane...

Like I said.  THis would drive me insane -- or at least push me to suicide.  Randall must have been a very patient man, or he had "learned" to be deaf.

Too funny JFT!  In fact it's almost scary! :8 :8

tpe, it was obvious the way Randall was portrayed that he was INDEED a patient man.  He seemed to be real accepting to the fact that his spouse could "talk a blue streak."

I had wondered if like Jack with Lureen, Randall was initially attracted to LaShawn.  Perhaps her looks?  But the moment she opens her mouth, things go straight downhill...

I had wondered if Randall had not married LaShawn like many gay men: for subterfuge, or to keep appearances so that they could lead a double life.

Was Randall younger than Jack?  How many years was it since Randall had left University?

Im'sure she was stupid or desperate enough to marry him and be camouflage.

As for the age thing, they way she talks about their having met and his coming to Childress for a job, it sounds as if he didn;t graduate so long before - maybe he's younger than Jack? That would go with his being more ready to take a chance on someone he'd just met, and not a rodeo clown but someone with a position in the community. I think of him as coming from a different, more liberal background and having the ideas of a younger generation.

This might be a mean thing to say about LaShawn, but I think she probably isn't smart enough to know what Randall was about... Ever...

And yes, I had the same impression: that Randall was fresh out of school (grad school, perhaps).  So the thought did occur to me that he was much younger than Jack.  Else, he finished his last dgree (Animal Husbandry) late.

Randall's world in many ways must have been quiter different from Jack's.  LaShawn certainly didn't expect that they'd end up in Childress...

The dynamic between Randall and LaShawn is quite a strange one.  But I am sure it must have worked.  In the area of their sex life, I am sure Randall was like Jack, in that he did what was necessary to keep her happy.  But I do suspect that Randall was not very good at this...

Poor man - he appears only briefly and yet we have him all sussed out.

And let's face it, it would take a lot to keep LaShawn happily occupied and quiet - if he manages that he's not doing too badly.

It's because we know very little about him that we are fascinated -- considering that he does plays an important role in Jack's final years (albeit not explicit in the story or film)...

Fascinated is right.  Just seeing Randall and LaShawn prompted me to think "wow...here's a story in itself."
