What if Ennis died?

How do u think Jack would've reacted? I think he would've committed suicide.

Hmmm... I dunno if he woulda done. After all, Ennis didn't commit suicide when Jack died did he?

Hmmm... I think suicide would be a bit extreme for Jack.  Although no one could replace Ennis, he would've moved on and found another man, maybe even with Randall.  Ennis didn't realize how much he loved Jack until he died, but Jack already knew how much he loved Ennis, so Ennis' death wouldn't have provided any further revelations for him.

Gosh that's a tough one...but suicide..I doubt it, moved on? left his wife? Heartbroken, but might have gone to see his girls...

But there's a difference. If Jack moved on with his life with someone else, but Ennis was still alive, that'd probably make Jack feel better. Because atleast Ennis was still alive and breathing. And even though Jack tried to move on with his life, I think he would've still cointinued seeing Ennis. Because "emotionally he was totally drawn to Ennis".

This is a hard one. I get the impression whether intentionally or not Jack would have ended up drinking himself to death.

I think Jack would have carried on looking for a man who could at least partly give him what he needed, stayed in an empty marriage, remembered Ennis and probably as you say would have died of alcohol poisoning/cirrhosis. Not exactly suicide, but self-destruction nevertheless.

My hypothesis was based on what Jack would do IF Ennis died, not Jack carrying on after Ennis' rejection

Breaks my heart to even think about it.  Do you mean instead of Jack? and in the same way? Jack probly would have done the same ting Ennis did. Find out what happened, visit Ennis's family and after countless bottles of booze to drown his sorrow He would have eventually carried ,onthough never the same as Ennis probably did. I think it would dishonor his love for Ennis in his mind to take his own life because of it He knew Ennis would'nt want that.

I think Jack would have definitely self-destructed in some way. Maybe picked a fight with the wrong cowboy and got himself killed. I don't see Jack doing the suicide thing, but finding a physical, violent way to force someone else to kill him, I can see that happening. Which is why, I think, maybe Annie Proulx chose  to get rid of Jack instead of the other way around. Ennis, obviously, is more  capable of surviving his grievous loss.

Oh I think Jack was much more a survivor and much more full of life than Ennis ever was....he would have been heartbroken and sad but definitely would have moved on.....

That's so depressing, but I have to agree, I think that's exactly what would've happened :( It's what he was doing anyway, when he only had a few weeks a year with Ennis, so if he didn't even have that, it just would've got worse and worse.Poor Jack.. :\'( :\'( :\'(

This whole thing is depressin. For Jack to wait all those years only to loose Ennis is to heartbreaking.Jack would've moved on and found someone with a lot of Ennis's qualities I would think.OR  maybe he'd find someone totally unlike Ennis In any case Jack would move on eventually.

Anyway, I'm sorry to be posting my first comment on a thread that I see most of you feel depressing ~)

But here it goes, coz this has been a question I've been trying to answer for a while... I actually agree with BrownEyes... I think that Jack is the type of person who's very dramatic, mellow, full of imagination - My point is, I think if it were Ennis who died, Jack wouldn't hesitate to follow him shortly... Like Lureen said, he had a BIG imagination, and he loved Ennis with all his life, he misses him when they're not together, he desperately wanted them to live together, as lovers, as a couple, like husbands and wives... I can't even imagine what state Jack would be in if he found out Ennis had died, he'd probably go and shoot himself right there and then coz I think he lived for Ennis... He only did other things with other guys coz he really needed Ennis but couldn't force him to be with him... So he looked for other things to get his mind off it, and that's when other guys came into the picture. They were both old when Jack had died, so if Ennis had died at that age too, I think Jack wouldn't have much to live for anyway... He doesn't love his wife and son (well not as much as Ennis did to his daughters), and he didn't have anywhere else to go... And keep in mind, Randall wasn't even in the book (I think)... Just in the movie.

That's why I think Jack would've killed himself if Ennis had been the one who died... Tho Ennis was incredibly sad when Jack died, he loved his daughters and they were his hope in life, also Ennis was always the rational one... Jack doesn't have anyone, and being a man of big imaginations, he'd probably think he'd meet Ennis in another life if he died too...

well...umm i think that jack would probaly i think go move to where ennis lived and stayed there with ennis so that they could actually be together he might even drink him self to death but with ennis cause in all the world all jack wanted to have was ennis so now he can not as close and breathing but hes still with him

Guau! that it's a hard cuestion... umm i think Jack still alive but his life will be sad and even if he'll be with another man, his soul will be empty and his heart broken... isn't that the same to be death?

Throughout the movie we watch a relationship deteriorate because of Ennis' refusal to give Jack what he needed and wanted.

From the boys frolicking on Brokeback Mountain, to the young men quietly riding horseback side by side, to a small argument when Jack suggested that Ennis move to Texas to a full shouting match.

Jack had found Randall and this is what gave him the nerve to confront Ennis on the last occasion. While Jack loved Ennis, he knew Randall was there to take up the physical slack.

If Ennis had died, Jack might have drank more but he would have gone on with his life...a very sad man.

In the Authorized Version, used by us Protestants, it reads, scarcely more comprehensibly IMO,  "When therefore ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place,whoso readeth, let him understand." Sound better in church Latin; it's comprehensible only to Thomas, whose beautiful mind is filled with such things. It's a compliment, Patriot 1; he assumes that we lesser mortals are as erudite as he is, and he's not strutting his stuff - it just comes naturally! :)

And BTW I agree with your reading of Jack's character - he wouldn't be overtly self-destructive, only indirectly.

You guys haven't heard from me in a while, sorry! But for those of you who think Jack would be ok after Ennis' death, Jack knew Randall for 5 years, and yet he still saw Ennis everytime he got. That proves that he was still miserable w/out Ennis, he loved him, and he was unhappy. If Jack was happy with Randall, he would've said bye-bye Ennis. But he didn't!

gosh, this thread is so sad... but it made me think...

in my opinion, jack would have continued to see randall (or someone else for that matter), but i also think that he'd have drunk much more and eventually he would have killed himself with too much alcohol (remember lureen saying "he drank a lot"). either he would have died from alcohol poisoning or he would have gotten into a fight with the wrong person...

either way, i think that jack wouldn't have lived till his natural death...  :\'( sad thought...
