I voted for Jack's mum/Mrs Twist. She said it all with subtle glances. She used her eyes to full effect and the gentle push on Ennis' shoulder for him to go too Jack's room.Only on screen for a short time, but enough to make her my fave after the boys.Lovely actress, great perfromance.

I agree with you 1000% Jennis. She was marvelous! Like you said, she was on screen such a short time and had very few words and yet manages to convey to us all her love and understanding for her son AND Ennis, and to get Ennis to go up to Jack's room where she knew what was waiting for him there.

Brilliant actress!!!!!!

I wish I knew if she ever got my letter.

o/t Aww,did you write to her Patrot1.How marvellous.I hope she did.Wonderful lady. She deserves the praise.

Yeah, I like Cassie too - Linda Cardellini did a great job there

(Totally OT but she has to be one of the luckiest actresses around - she got to snog Goran Visnjic regularly in ER and then she gets to do the same with Heath Ledger ::))

oh, I just saw this post and I feel the urge to brag a bit- Goran is a croatian actor  ;D ;D ;D ( finally someone from my country who actually made it ;) ).
and I totally agree- Linda is one lucky woman  ;)

Good to brag about it koka.  :)

I do think she is a lucky woman in many ways.  And she played the role of Cassie wonderfully.  The final meeting with Ennis is quite powerful.  It was so full of tension.  Not as dramatic as the one between Ennis and Alma.  But, in some ways, equally powerful.

I totally agree with you on this one my dear Thomas.
the 'girls don't fall in love with fun' scene is just so utterly powerful....I mean, you can totally see it in her eyes, you can SEE that she wants to 'get him' but instead realises she never will.....

koka, do you think she was totally at a loss about Ennis, or perhaps she knew but didn't want to face it?  In that scene, whe was a bundle of confused nerves.

I don't know, but I think she genuinly didn't get it. she loved the guy, yeah...but I think the fact that he may be in love with another man never came to mind- or at least she would have never allowed herself to even consider the possibility, even for a moment.

Yes, I think she did love him and was genuinely hurt.

How many hearts were broken in this movie?  Seeing Cassie's agony set against the backdrop of everyone else's, I can begin to entertain the idea of a cruel and mischievous God in BBM.

Yes, she connects because we are her.

The interesting thing about Cassie is that Alma Jr. warned her and she chose not to listen.

Tell you what...truth is, sometimes I miss you so much I can hardly stand it...

Maybe she dismissed Alma Jr - what would a teenager know? And women are eternal optimists - she's evidently very attracted and to quite a considerable degree committed to Ennis and doesn't want to give him up.

She did sincerely care for Ennis, no?  I guess that's why it hurty her so much.  She must have been aching for her love to be reciprocated in a more definitive fashion.

I think that you're both right, she's  so wonderful, and after all the  anguish, distress  and grief that Ennis experienced, it was such a relieve to see Jack's mom, being ,what a real mother should really be... <^(

I do find the later Lureen quite enigmatic.  Her face in her last scene with Ennis hid more than it revealed.

I just get Lureen; her actions and reactions. In the beginning the outgoing young woman and later, after all these years of disappointments, this lukewarm and but yet hardworking lady. I think she actually never gave up hoping for a recovered relationship with Jack  :)

She was so cold and changed in the last scenes. She also seemed very remote.  It is amazing when we compare and contrast her earlier and later life.

I like Lureen too. I think there's a lot of similarities between her and Jack, and Jack and Ennis, in the way that she's so in love at the beginning, but eventually becomes worn down and bitter when she realises the "happy ever after" she'd hoped for with Jack was never going to happen. She wanted more from Jack than he was able to give, just like Jack did with Ennis. And I also feel that Lureen hoped until the end that she and Jack could make it work, like Jack always hoped for the same with him and Ennis :(
There was some open space between what he knew and what he tried to believe, but nothing could be done about it, and if you can't fix it you've got to stand it.

The tragedy of Lureen was that she never really knew Jack.  This is what makes her such a tragic figure: she seemingly had everything and lost a great deal in the end.  She draws forth very complex emotions from each of us.  She is to be pitied as much as deserving of our scorn.

What about Monroe?  He seems a bit shadowy in the movie, but we seem to get the feeling that he was a patient and quiet man.  He is likeable enough, although I don't know if he is a favorite.

A character that has always intrigued me is Lureen's mother.  She is totally in the shadows, and we remember her for her hair.   And yet, we can think of the life she must have led and would assume that she had always deferred to her husband.  But there is so little known about her.
