Of course, what you say is very true.
If Ennis is taking these actions unconsiously, then Jack is at a disadvantage here.  I mean if Ennis is just doing what men do in front of  each other, in front of Jack without consious regard of how it effects Jack,  (whom btw is aware of his feelings long before Ennis,) then he has the burden of expressing those feelings in some way to make Ennis understand what has happened to him without scaring the bejeezez out of Ennis , maybe scaring him off for good.
 In this situation, Jack has to hide his desires and his awareness.that he felt more than friendship for Ennis. Signals are definitly being sent here but if one recognizes them ,but in  the other  it does'nt compute,  there can be a problem. By the time FNIT happens, Jack has registerd enough * clues* from Ennis that he felt compelled and ready to approach Ennis in the way he did. Personally, as I first watched this  potato peeling scene my heart went out to Jack. The acting is superb here from Jakey G . Who could not get what was going on inside Jack at this moment? MHO.  :cr)

the first 20 minutes of the film were full of jack looking at ennis's goods and there is one bit when jack is being flung about by his horse were ennis bends his head to one side looks to me as if he is checking out jacks ass but i wasnt as sure on that.

Just randomly popping into this thread before bed. I have to say that I totally feel you on this, aintfoolin, not only because I get what Jack's feeling/thinking here, but because I've been there so many times growing up. He may as well be cutting a jagged thin line through his desires here rather than a potato.  ^-^  :-\\

 Well, Jack did appear to be somewhat caught off guard here, I mean of all the places Ennis chooses to get nekkid as a jaybird.... Does anyone else feel that Ennis maybe had a little idea what he was doing? I'm not sure, but I just get the feeling that when it came to sex with Jack, subtlety was not his strong suite? All those little prolonged glances  and gestures of goodwill toward Jack leading up to FNIT? ;) ;) :*( :*(? Hmmmm.

I don't think Ennis was aware of what he was doing to Jack in the potato peeling scene. He's just getting shaved and washed and he moves away from Jack to do the washing part. I mean, he probably realises that Jack is distracted - his failure to open the beans properly and all - but I don't think he has the slightest clue that it's his nakedness that's causing it ;D

Yeah, I sure do aintfoolin. I mentioned this way back, but it didn't seem to get any traction. Of all the places in the whole out-of-doors for him to strip down and go rubbing himself . . .  It just seemed way too convenient to me, been easy enough to just step 'round the side of the tent. Like, "Here it is Jack, want some a' this?". I also felt his description of the size of the coyote, "Balls as big as apples" was unusually graphic in a male sexual way. Huh? Real subtle way of injecting sex, male sex, into the relationship. So subtle doubt Ennis even realized whut he was doin'.

Obviously Jack was already smitten as he fumbled with the can opener. Ennis sittin there shirtless , removing his socks and boots., but I don't think he really expected Ennis to go the *full monty* on em 2 ft away from him. Jackster,  I remember that little tidbit of info a while back, about the close proximity when he could have gone someplace more private. I also agree with you that the *balls the size a apples* statement implies some sexual innuendo towards Jack, or can easily be translated that way. If so, he got the desired effect. On this forum, there is a thread entitled " How did Jack Know To Make A Move On Ennis? or something to that affect, within that thread are many mentions of subtle signs that Ennis may have  been checking out a package of his own. Jack's,... leading Jack to feel Ennis was ripe for the pickins.This just may be one of them.

I think that Ennis behaviour in these scenes are the same in a more physical way than the innuendo about his opportunities or his already smitten glances mean in the more emotional way.That he was flirting and,for this reason,sending signals to Jack that his interest for him went beyond a pure friendship.If this previous innuendos-subtle,almost shy...-hadn't existed,we could perfectly think that he was washing in the nude near him for a simple question of commodity-he needn't to make a trip to wash himself a little... :) - and that there wasn't anything remarkable in doing it near a fellow whom one shares living and work with in these hard times on the mountain.

This is interesting aintfoolin, you know I never put 2+2 together regarding Jack's fumble with the can opener with Ennis stripping down right there. I remember reading somewhere that this fumble was actually just a complete accident on the set, it wasn't supposed to happen. But Jake and Heath just took it as it came and played right into the action. Maybe Jake was a little distracted! I'm sure they all got a big hoot about it afterwards!

i was meaning maybe the checking out of ennis's package was not scripted and that maybe rather then jack looking it was just jakes choice ;)
