A Collective Thank You
« on: Aug 02, 2006, 06:11 PM »
I consider BBM to be a gift, not only because it is a wonderfully moving movie/story but because of all of the love and goodwill that is seen on this forum daily. Since the brokie love has only deepened over time, EnnisJack.com would like to share that with those that brought BBM into our lives.

Perhaps they already know through our past campaigns, our individual letters/postcards to them, etc but we would like to send a collective thank you/show of appreciation to them. It’s been expressed many times on this forum that we wonder if they truly know all of the good that has come from BBM- this forum, the friendships and connections made that all stemmed from their work.

The idea of this thread is to post a short message expressing a thank you, why I love BBM, what being a Brokie means to me - thoughts along those lines.

This thread will be kept open until the end of August and the posts will be printed and sent to those involved in bringing this story to us which ultimately brought us all together. If for some reason you want to participate but don’t want to post it publicly please feel free to send me a pm and I will be sure to include it.

Please refrain from replying to the posts in this thread because they will have to be removed when we print it out. Thank you.  :)

BBM brought about a change in many people, a dynamic intertwining of thoughts, views and opinions that is shared by many on this forum.  While all we can say is thank you, our lives continue to be impacted through the caring and sharing that is evident on this forum which owes its existence to the art brougt to us by all of you involved.

Yes I love it...it is not about a film but a way of life....
How could not I care of compassion, acceptance, feelings,
friendship and love beyond death?
These are the values that mark us and the ones which  bind us together too.
Thanks Michelle to have given us another possibility to express us...

BBM stands alone as a work of art and one with a universal message of the need for tolerance and inderstanding. It is unique in having inspired  friendships world-wide; those who would never have met otherwise have been drawn together to share their feelings with others who understand. Its world-wide success shows that a movie that tells a meaningful story does not need millions of dollars spent on its making; it simply needs all the fundamentals, excellent acting, cinematography, muisic. BBM affirms diversity and the value of love however manifested. Its truth and honesty shine like Shakespeare's "good deed in a naughty world".

BBM has touched the core of my being, and redirected my priorities to pursue happiness, grab opportunities when they present themselves, value relationships and not take them for granted, de-emphasize material wealth, and set in motion the process of chipping down the wall that I have spent years building from past unsavory experiences.  Thanks to all involved in making this movie.  For this to happen in my lifetime,  I'm eternally grateful and indebted to you all.  It truly has been a life changing event for me.

Brokeback Mountain was made with such obvious painstaking care that it has become something far greater than the sum of its wonderful parts. It is so astoundingly vivid that Ennis and Jack seem like real people to me which makes me revel in their few joyful times together and grieve anew at the outcome every time I watch this film. Each time word arrives of Jack's death, I feel as if I've lost a loved one. As many others have said, the film has compelled me to examine my life and my priorities. It's a long, arduous process that I probably wouldn't have undertaken without the jolt I got from Brokeback Mountain. I never would have imagined a film could do to me what this one has; I've never experienced anything like the way it haunts me seven months after I first saw it. It's a rare work of art and I feel privileged it appeared in my lifetime. Thank you. I have more gratitude than I can express for this rare gift.
You come back and see us again.

Where to begin with long list of gifts this movie and story have brought into my life. I must first recognize and thank the wonderful people in this forum. The gifts of Brokeback Mountain are numerous, too numerous to mention in a short post. But if you know one thing, know that your work and talent have brought many, many good things to some loving human beings, and that is a gift to the entire world.
My most sincere thanks to everyone that had even the smallest part in making a movie I am proud to be a "part" of, and so thoroughly embrace. You all have truly made a significant contribution to the world and it's growth to a more loving and understanding society.

Thank you Brokeback for opening my eyes again and not to hide memories.
Love is a force of nature and should be accepted at least by ourselves.
Only when we have  can step forward and accept difference of love and life in ourselves, we will be appreciated as we are.
Brokeback will stay for a love which was not meant to be, but Brokeback stands for hope for loves out there in this world which may and should happen.
There is always someone out there for everybody. I do agree that those friends may be hard to find, but sometimes we walk just by and don't notice.
Feel the love in you

Thanks for all of the posts and sentiments.  :) I am sending this out this week along with assorted posts from around the forum. This is the cover letter that is going out with the package.

Will there ever be enough words to say thank you? Is there even a word that exists to express the love and gratitude that is felt every day because of this wonderful story? Brokie love, brokie magic, phenomenon, amazing, miracle- these are a small sampling of words and phrases used daily by the brokies at EnnisJack.com. You may think you wrote a story or a screenplay, produced or directed a movie or even gave the most heartfelt portrayals of two now beloved and iconic characters and while that is true, you need to know that what you did was so much more.

Where to begin? All of us (2930 members)  read a story and saw a movie that irrevocably changed us. All of us have seen or read things that touched and moved us but nothing hit us in that very deep place or haunted most of our waking moments until Brokeback Mountain. Like minded and now distraught souls were seeking out someone, anyone who could help them with this affliction- post brokeback syndrome (PBS).This affliction became a pandemic-affecting people all over the world 2 hours and 14 minutes at a time. It is an affliction that knows no gender, orientation, race or creed for we are all humans and everyone of us vulnerable to life. We all found an idyllic place up in the mountains, where the bluebirds sing and there’s a whiskey spring. We join around the fire sharing laughter, tears and more importantly love. Someone is always there to lend a shoulder and to always pick you up but never knock you down. No one questions why you’ve seen the movie or read the story so many times or why you still sob each time. We all know why. It is an amazing thing to find the unquestioning love and support that one is sometimes hard pressed to find in “real life”.

We all joined together to try to make sense of why this impacted us so deeply. We are still joined together now in love and friendship, for the brokies are the children of Jack and Ennis. We have found the shards of their broken hearts and together we make them whole again. We are now the keepers of their story as well as their love and we cherish and defend both everyday. Some of us became active in gay rights, others stepped up their efforts for there are still Jack’s and Ennis’ that need a voice. Most of us re-examined our lives because their story is our story whether we be gay or straight. Most of us remember the date that we first came upon the story or saw the movie- how many other movies or stories can make that claim?

It may sound absurd to love something that devastates us so much and to keep going back for more. There is no cure for pbs and no one is seeking one. Why? Because while pbs is chronic and it means feeling their pain, there is, more importantly, the love and support of friends that would have otherwise never have been found. Annie Proulx best summed up our Brokeback family: “They were respectful of each other's opinions, each glad to have a companion where none had been expected.”

On our forum we have a board for discussing the impact that the movie had on us, a board for character and scene discussions, short story discussions, regular chit chat, brokeback speak, articles, poetry fitting for Brokeback as well as numerous others. Attached to this is a small sampling of thoughts that were posted on our forum as well as thoughts from a recent brokie meet and greet in Montreal. This is being sent to you as a way of saying thank you for all you have done, to let you know that without you none of this would ever have been possible. It has been said many times on our forum that we wonder if those involved in the story/ movie truly know the impact that has been made in the lives of so many. Thank you almost seems inadequate but we hope from this small sampling you can get a sense of the love that is felt because of you. You lit that fire for us, a beacon that called us all together and we will always keep it burning.

Thank You.

Posted for Flwrchild.  :)

My Brokeback Mountain experience has been a surprising journey that has led me to places I never expected to go. I first saw it in early February. It crawled into my heart and mind and wouldn’t let go. It has made me re-evaluate my priorities, nurture my personal relationships, and reawakened my activist spirit! During this process I found the ennisjack forum. I truly thought it was just going to provide me with entertainment and information about the movie. What I found was the most amazing community (yes community!) of diverse people, spread out all over the globe with an extraordinary capacity  for compassion, acceptance and love.  Together we are determined to make this a better world. One in which Jack and Ennis would be able to live and love freely. I have made lifelong friends who have enriched my life in ways I can’t even express. So I too feel the need to thank Annie Proulx for creating these characters and this story, Diana Ossana and Larry McMurtry for the seamless transition to screenplay, Ang Lee for the vision to bring it to the screen, Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger for so completely inhabiting Jack and Ennis and forever imprinting them on our hearts, and every member of the cast and crew, without whom this remarkable ‘Force of Nature’ would never have come to life. Not to mention Gustavo Santaolalla for his haunting and beautiful score. I am forever changed and profoundly grateful.

My Lust,Caution experience...

Quote
I'm back from Lust, Caution :)

1.  Ang Lee is one of the rare directors I go see every new movie in a theater.  Almodovar & Woody Allen are ones, Altman was another one but he left this world.

2.  I was not happy my favorite theater was not showing Lust, Caution at all which I found surprising.

3.  I was delighted my second favorite theater, the AMC Forum, was showing the original version with English subtitles.  O0

4.  Going to the movies on a week day afternoon is one of the best decadent delight I enjoy, we were no more than 15 people in the theater. 8)

Ang Lee has a way to get the best from actors, BBM is one of many examples.  All the actors in Lust, Caution are excellent.  Tang Wei (her first movie) and Tony Leung are amazing but like BBM was Heath Ledger's movie (don't throw rocks at me plize) Lust, Caution is Tang Wei's movie.  It's an Ang Lee movie, very detailed, the unspoken is very explicit.  In this movie Ang takes his time (and ours) to unfold the story and this is where probably many won't like it, the pace is very slow.  I don't mind about a slow pace if the movie is that good.  It's like a fine meal with fine wines, you take your time to enjoy them and enjoy the movie I did.  Rodrigo Pietro's photography is wonderful (no surprise), Alexandre Desplat's music is discreet but very efficient.  The casting is brilliant, so are the sets and costumes.

Some senes are already classics in movie history, a seduction scene in a restaurant, another restaurant scene where Wong Chia-Chi (Tang Wei) sings for her lover, Mr. Yee (Tony Leung), have tissues ready for this one.  Lust, Caution is just another Ang Lee movie you think you liked when you exit the theater but, the more you think about it afterwards, the more you like it.

Beware, there is one very graphic & disturbing murder scene.  The sex scenes are, to say the least, explicit but they are justifed considering the plot, it's not just lust, it's about love and passion and about the characters.

I won't spoil about the ending but... it ends a bit like BBM.  :\'(

Yes, once again Ang Lee made me cry.

Thanks Mr. Lee  :^^)

Thread:  Anyone else find the final scenes comforting?

Hope, Contentment and the The Transformation of Ennis

Lancecowboy, a very insightful question here, IMO the last scenes show the arrival of Ennis’s transformation that has been evolving since we first see him standing all alone in front of Aguirre’s trailer before Jack arrives. IMO the major landmarks in this change have been marked along the way at these points or scenes, with aspects of his growth being show in (parentheses) – Just my views of course, everybody has their own special scenes.

“No more beans - orders soup” (friendship)

Shooting the elk (devotion)

“You wanna switch?” (commitment)

FNIT (lust)

SNIT (love)

“Bring ‘em Down” – “This ain’t no rodeo” (confusion)

Crying in the Alley (loss)

“You Bet” (longing)

“Come here” [the reunion kiss]. . . (passion)

“Just sending up a prayer of thanks” (self understanding)

“You ever get the feelin’ “ . . . (self awakening)

Bringing down the shirts (public coming out)

“Does he love you?” (sharing emotions)

“Jack I swear “. . . (self acceptance)

Each point marks a step, a step in the growth of Ennis to a fuller, or a more complete person. At the end we see Ennis transformed, the transformation may not be complete but it has made significant advancement. It is both sad and hopeful, both heartbreaking and inspiring. Jack is gone but the "complete" Ennis has taken his place.

Is the glass half empty or half full? I can see it both ways, depending on the day and my state of mind. To me this this is the beauty of great art, it can transform us while at the same time transforming itself, daily.
