Am I the only one who feels that the preacher who marries Ennis and Alma is creepy?

When he says "And if you don't I will." I get the chills. Isn't that a weird thing for him to say? It's so not funny and so odd that he would say that at the wedding ceremony that I can hardly look at him.

Now I'll tell you what I really feel...!

I agree. There is something about him that you can't just quite put your finger on.

It does seem rather inappropriate doesn't it. But then, I am not a church goer so maybe people really act this way.

He almost sounded like a guy that would say, "Want some candy little girl. Come with me."

I just hope the preacher was a single man or his wife might have something to say when he gets home.

Funny. I never saw that as creepy at all. Just kind of cute.

I think the preacher probably knew Alma pretty well - small town, close knit community, her obviously a church goer, he's probably known her since she was a little girl - and it was just a joke that he knew would get a laugh.

U seen Braveheart? Don't remember the word for it but it is called first night.. We had it here too, the priest would get first night with the bride

I am guessing this priest would want that practise returned

Esme - it's "prima nocte"

But it certainly wasn't the priest who had that right - in Braveheart it was the English lord who was in charge of the village who took the bride on the first night of her marriage

Don't think you'd have wanted the particular husband from Braveheart, Patriot. He wasn't exactly good looking!

Such an creepy subject.

Honestly, I did not get a sense that the preacher was particularly lecherous. But I must admit that his joke about kissing the bride could rub a groom the wrong way. Ennis did seem mildly annoyed, no? Overall though, I though that he was harmless enough. Am I being a bit naive here?

I didn't think of the preacher as creepy but did think that it was an inappropriate thing for him to say. I suppose it was a very quiet country town where everyone knew everyone very well but still I don't think the church is a place to joke around like that, especially from the preacher. Quite weird really.

Perhaps we are being abit harsh in our judgement here. Perhaps the preacher knew both of them since childhood, and felt close enough to both of them that he assumed he could take liberties such as these...

I can only agree with you, Asali. Perhaps not so creepy, but more than a tad out of place.

"Droit de seigneur" it was called by my Norman French ancestors - if this guy wanted that with Alma, he's entirely welcome. Wonder about the guy who married Jack and Lureen?

I thought it was a really strange thing to say, but then we don't have the kissing the bride thing here anyway, or not in proper services anyway - don't know about the happy clappies, who seem obsessed with kissing one another on every possible occasion. [Went to a revivial in Texas once - dragged reluctant husband - not too bad till they started telling you to shake hands with/kiss the person next to you and tell them you were happy they were there - at this point husband came over very British.]

Actually i wondered if he knew Alma well - she seems the sort to have gone to church - and knew what Ennis was like - ie undemonstrative - and thought he needed a bit of encouragement, which he did in an inappropraite way.

He ooks like the sort who'd molest the sheep up on Brokeback if he got half a chance.

I think NoReins pretty much sums up my opinion too, although it is a little inappropriate for a preacher. I didn't actually notice it before, so it couldn't have bothered me that much....

welshwitch, I had to laugh at that bit in your post when your husband come over all 'British', I can almost visualise it..

That is SO funny! I also agree that Ennis looks quite uncomfortable after the preacher says it. Also, isn't every single moment in this divine movie purposeful for Ang Lee's grand design?

So that preacher gets my creep vote.

At first, I didn't think of it "creepy" I thought it was only humorous....I chuckled everytime he says that.

But now after reading the posts, it does seem to be creepy.

I also go back to Ennis's reaction to the preacher's offer. There is indeed a note of ambivalence in his look. As for why the preacher said it: subliminal desire, perhaps?

Then again, perhaps this preacher felt so secure about his position as a moral bedrock of the community that he invariably does what a lot of preachers fall into: take liberties that they would not have done had they thought about it more carefully. A friend once described a presbyterian pastor who continually used the term "dork" in one of his sermons. My friend had to tell him later that "dork" is actually a reference to the male genitalia. The pastor was shocked when he realized this.

Actually when i think about it vicars and priests ans similar often try to be folksy and "come down to the level" of "ordinary" lay people. Perhaps he was just trying to do this and got it wrong, as, in a cringe-making way, often happens.

I also thought that vicars and priests nowadays try to come down to the level of the laity -- the young, in particular. I am sure that the preacher was doing this when he joked about kissing Alma. I am quite sure it was meant as a compliment to the beauty of the bride...

I am a church goer and I did find the remark a little odd. I attend a fairly large church so our ministers do not have the same comfort level with their parishoners as one who officiates over a small congregation. I interpreted the remark as something along the line of....

"Don't be shy boy! You've got a pretty bride standing there. Kiss her before someone else does!"

In my eyes the preacher was just trying to inject a little humor. Obviously he should have left the comedy for the skilled.
