Is it the lighting, or does he color his hair?  Sometimes it looks brown, sometimes black.

Well, the photographer just put him in there with those...whatever they are, vertical rods...and let him do his thing.  What he was doing, he would be feeling from inside, not from the camera's eye.  But then, the photographer could have encouraged him into certain positions.

Me: "With your tongue"
Her: "No that would taste gross"
Me: "I dunno, it's Jake. I think I could overlook some gross tasting ash if that means I get to lick him."
