I love this unconditionally with all my heart...and because it's apparently from the full-screen version so we can see Jack's position better -- his left leg is up, foot probably on the ground, as opposed to kneeling on both knees.  And then...the fastest one-handed belt unbuckling of 1963.

FYI - This is a deleted scene (from a late screenplay) in which Jack gives Ennis a "presentation" rifle, the kind with all sorts of fancy metalwork and trim, etc. Ennis is unable to accept it as it represents over a months pay to him and he's afraid of what Alma will say if he brings it home. It's a bit heatbreaking, Jack wanting to do right by his man and show him how much he means to him, but he goes way over the top to the degree that it makes Ennis feel somewhat small. They come to a painfull understanding about it, illustrating the difference in the economic conditions they each faced.

Thank you, jackster.  I never knew this much detail about this scene.  Heartbreaking, indeed, that Ennis really can't accept it...and what this whole thing says about their different lives.
