Yes, this is correct. The can opener slip and splatter of the beans was not scripted. I always love watching both these guys react to this action, Heath is particularly cool in response and his look towards Jack. He's looking at Jack just as Ennis would, with a sort of "you dumb f**k" expression on his face.

You mean this expression? ;D

Never seen these pics from that scene. Ennis's face is too funny! ;D And lovely, of course  ::)

Me too... I love the colors, so bright and radiant! The good old days... From the moment they are separated, I think that the photo, the colors are duller, darkened  :(

So, Ennis wears socks but no underpant... ::)

I always love watching both these guys react to this action, Heath is particularly cool in response and his look towards Jack. He's looking at Jack just as Ennis would, with a sort of "you dumb f**k" expression on his face. And then Jake's slamming the can down on the grill is pretty precious too. Since this scene was pre-FNIT, the guys really were able to show how close and intimate Jack and Ennis had become. But I've also thought that Ennis's remark regarding the size of the coyotes BALLS is whut flustered and distracted Jack from his mundane task and resulted in the slip, huh?

Hi there Jackster,
I too hadn't realized that the mistake with the can opener wasn't somehow planned but was accidental and then retained in the film. But how do we know this? Myprivatejack says that he "read" this somewhere and, by the look of it. you have read it somewhere too. I'd be delighted if you - or myprivatejack  - would let me know where I could find the source for this.
The splattering can, of course, provides a neatly ironic commentary on Jack's earlier claim that he was "pretty good with a can opener" just as his squashed harmonica is a commentary on his claim of absolute mastery over the filly he has been riding. There seems to be a pattern here.

Oh boy, what did you know and when did you know it?  :-\\
Hmmmm . . . years ago in a place far, far, away . . . . I will try and come up with some idea of where this came from. My recollection is that it was an interview with a fairly unimpeachable source, it doesn't seem like it was Jake or Heath, but someone else pretty close to the events, maybe Ang making a comment about the splattering of the beans when Jack was opening the can. I'll try and put some serious thought to this over the weekend. Maybe some that have better memories than I can nail it down more precisely.

Some of my favorite screencaps of them together are from the scene when Jack plays the harmonica and Ennis tells him he'll run the sheep off again. I love the smile on Ennis's face after he says that.

I love thinking about whether the wrecked can opening attempt was scripted or not - I do like to think it's not, but I just like the fact there is still things to think about even now, after all this time.

And I love his expression in this pic too..... <^( <^(

I find Ennis (or Heath's) expression very funny here.He looks like thinking: What a mess this f!@#$ng asshole has just done ¡ What a patience must I have with him ¡ ;D
Ennis’s eyes gone bright with shock, mouth opening then closing again. “Love?” Ennis said finally, voice strangling in his throat.

Jack smiled sad. “Yeah, Ennis. Love.” Leaned forward and kissed Ennis’s temple, whispered, “What’d you think it was, all this time?”

WOW ¡  %&) I'm so sorry,Chowhound, but it's really difficult to remember where I read this...As Jackster,I think it's an anecdote someone very close to the movie explained there's some years; maybe it was Ang himself, but I can't tell it for sure... :-\\

Thank you! I love these screencaps. So much complicity between them. I love the way Ennis jokes about the harmonica (even 4 years later...) It warms my heart to see him feeling comfortable and happy with his Jack <^(

You are right, BBMsheep. Here is a very technical explanation of how this contrast was achieved:

Choosing film stocks was even more complex than choosing lenses, because the filmmakers wanted to establish a subtle visual distinction between the early scenes of Jack and Ennis on Brokeback Mountain and most of what follows. Lee explains, "I didn't want to divide it in terms of `The days on the mountain are great, and off the mountain sucks.' But I knew the mountains should be romantically photographed. That's why the film is called Brokeback Mountain -- everybody has a Brokeback Mountain, a yearning for romance or the illusion of romance. When Jack and Ennis are off the mountain, they want to go back but are never really able to. The landscape gets drier and drier as we go along and gradually becomes a backdrop." In the towns, the framing often includes the sky; in addition to the story's intimate scale, this emphasis on the mountains' vertical scope is why the filmmakers decided to shoot in standard 1.85:1. "We wanted to visually separate the men's everyday lives in Wyoming, where Ennis lives, and Texas, where Jack lives, from their experiences on Brokeback Mountain," says Prieto. "For day-exterior mountain scenes, I used [Eastman EXR 50D] 5245 because I wanted those images to feel a little crisper and cleaner -- I wanted the air to be more transparent." Daylight scenes down in the towns were filmed on Kodak Vision 250D 5246 to achieve "a touch more grain and a touch more contrast," he continues. "Judy Becker's production design featured muted colors, and we wanted [the town] to feel a little grayer, a little harsher than thte mountain scenes."

Indeed, - let me reiterate BBMsheep's thoughts - thanks so much CH for sharing this background info. Always wonderful to hear what they were thinking of and trying to do. Makes you realise how much effort goes into making something this good. Knowledge and techniques that most of us have no concept of, but can only appreciate in the final form.

Thanks for sharing this information,CH ¡  ^f^ I hadn't read it before, even if I knew that colours and bright intensity had been chosen to remark the difference between their happy times together and their almost gloomy existences when separated.Really,BBM is a work where everything is done with a purpose in order to obtain the masterpiece it is ¡  (:*
