I love this scene where Ennis offers to switch places. It was so sweet, and Jack was clearly taken aback...

As I mentioned in previous posts, I thought that Jack was always complaining because he wanted to find an excuse to be with Ennis at night, and not be separated from him. Ennis's offer was not what he expected or really wanted, but he must have been touched nonetheless...

You are right, Jack was always trying to be with Ennis. I think Ennis wanted the same but did not dare to tell him.

I probably couldn't agree more. Ang does an admirable job of leaving his messages between the lines of his characters.
In this particular scene, both characters are brimming with something I can relate to almost ridiculously; each has a personality sort of radiating vulnerability, cemented in brand new ground. Civilized, timid, aching for connection and maybe not knowing it as equally..

So interesting. I never quite put my finger on what was being felt there. I did feel Jack's complaining was in order to try to get to stay in camp with Ennis, but you're right, that it backfired on him, but yet it showed him something about Ennis that was pleasing...

Well said, OT -- this is indeed a scene "brimming" with new and unspoken emotion, feeling their ways with each other.

Thanks kathy for your comments. I've always thought that Jack was always consciously trying to get together with Ennis -- to create a situation, I would say. I think Ennis was slow initially, but by the time they thave reached the scene right before FNIT, I think Ennis was already subconsiously abetting to help create that situation...
