I think the setting of the scene in the film is what adds to the poignancy of it. Jack's deeply remembered feelings of being held so sweetly by Ennis whilst watching him drive away - again - really grab at your heart.   You're right, that contrast makes it unbearably sad and incredibly powerful and sad.
