"Our D-I-V-O-R-C-E becomes final today"

On my last viewing of the film, something puzzled me about the post-divorce scene, where Jack meets Ennis and his girls. Doesn't Jack say to Ennis something to the effect of 'I got your note that the divorce went through'? I find it odd that Ennis would have written to Jack about it, even though it was an important event. I mean, I just don't see Ennis ever writing anything but a one- or two-word postcard to schedule their next BBM trip. But if he did write Jack, wouldn't he expect Jack to do just what Jack did--show up on his doorstep, expecting some announcement about their impending life together? Ennis's writing to Jack about the divorce being final seems almost cruel. Why wouldn't he just wait till their next meeting to break the news? Was he hoping Jack might come and change his mind abot living together? Might he have changed his mind, if Ennis hadn't had his girls that weekend?

I know, I need to get a life. :-[

My view is that Ennis was sad upon the event and he needed someone to talk to -- so he told Jack about it. (In short story, Ennis phoned Jack about this news) Jack, well, misunderstood it... (sad... :~ )

tee hee, no you have a life....just a life now with BBM, it complicated things...

Anyways, i agree with you.  IN the story, it's mentioned more casually cause Ennis dials Jack's number after getting the "deceased" card and it says he never called it except for once before to tell about the divorice and Jack misunderstood and drove to see him, then they incorporated that into a large scene in the movie (brilliantly I might add...)  So it's kinda a hole in the script in a way, I don't see Ennis writing to him about it either.  I can see a quick drunken phone call actually ...that might be misinterpreted...

To me the real significance of that scene is Jack's eagerness and Ennis pushing him away yet again.  First, Jack hugs Ennis, then Ennis shoves his hand away because he's afraid the girls will see.  Then, while they're talking, Ennis becomes fixated on the truck going by, as if whoever's in it will "know,"  and he tells Jack he can't be with him that weekend.  No wonder poor Jack cries as he drives away.

Ennis fixing the pick-up driving in distance is just another of the film's jewels imho

"I loved it. Shocking. Surprising. The guy who financed my movie did that too. He's a very mild mannered chap from Minnesota and we'd just screened the latest cut of my film and he asked if I wanted to see it. I was thinking, 'OK, this really square, straight guy,' and he showed me this movie. It's amazing.

Yes, it's not in the short story, but what a masterful way to bring across Ennis' fear and paranoia.  I mean, come on, the man thinks someone just driving by is going to figure it out?  It leads into that part in their last scene together where Ennis is talking about being on the street and people looking at them, and "they all know."  He seems to get more obsessed about it as he gets older.  No way that kissing scene outside Ennis' apartment would've happened later on, IMO.  Jack gets looser, and Ennis just gets tighter and tighter...

The song playing on the radio when Jack drives away crying is "A Love That Will Never Grow Old"  I wonder what was going through Jack's mind hearing this song after getting "shot down" again?

Man, I need the DVD now.  I like that bit of detail and missed it!  Aaaaahhh... I feel so behind.
