Ennis and Jack eyes closed - Wonder...
« on: Jan 24, 2006, 02:58 PM »
When Ennis and Jack are with their wives, in intimate or close relaxed moments,
they  sometimes close their eyes,...I wonder ...

Are they thinkin  about each other  ? ? Missin each other ??

Not so sure in the case of Jack.  But in an interview, Gyllenhaal says that Ledger told him the following: Ledger envisioned Ennis to be very sensitive to light; hence, Ledger protrayed Ennis as a man whose eyes are always narrowed out.

This does not exactly address your point, but it is interesting to note, nonetheless... :)

Really?  But Heath's eyes always look squinty to me....I thought that was just the way Heath is?

If that comment is true, invest in some shades, Ennis my boy!   8)

I don't know about that one. That would be kind of cute, though.
Like vast clouds of steam from thermal springs in winter the years of things unsaid and now unsayable -- admissions, declarations, shames, guilts, fears -- rose around them. Ennis stood as if heart-shot, face grey and deep-lined, grimacing, eyes screwed shut, fists clenched, legs caving, hit the ground on his knees.

When Jack first dances with Lureen they keep contact and all smiles..just before the edit to the car scene Jack moves his face in close right beside Lureen's and loses eye contact with her...his face just melts..thinking about Ennis?..just maybe..

In this scene, I think he must have been thinking about Ennis, since his dance with Lureen would have evoked romantic feelings in him that certainly must have brought Ennis directly to mind.  This is just my opinion. :)

In the way that Ennis sometimes made love to Alma, I thought it apparent that he was thinking of Jack.  Annie Proulx wrote:  <<. . . and he (Ennis) rolled her (Alma) over, did quickly what she hated.>>  For me this was a direct connection to the scene in the short story when Ennis and Jack first make love:  <<Ennis . . . got to his knees, unbuckled his belt, shoved his pants down, hauled jack onto all fours and, with the help of the clear slick and a little spit, entered him, nothing he'd done before but no instruction manual needed.>>  This passage is awesome as Ennis is operating on sheer instinct in his physical relations with Jack.

Thanksgiving at Jack's..remember when Jack returns the last time to turn off the TV he really touches Lureen on her right shoulder with affection or maybe respect..it is like they were at least some kind of "team"? Thoughts?

Quick question for all of you, have you been in love? Have you dated the wrong person, wishing he/she was someone else?

Well I have ;D ...and if you have feelings for someone, the stupidest little things will remind me of that person: it can a be a song, a hat, flowers, perfum...etc...intimacy even.

I close my eyes and remember!

I don't think I'm the only one...so when I saw Ennis and Jack do the same...I just assumed their characters were like me :-\

Only when I walked into the room.

I was the one with blinders on.

got the bad news from a mutual friend - a week later.  Now I know what they mean by "kill the messenger"

In the past, now one of my most ironic but AWFULLY FUNNY lines.

Granny always said:  "Laugh and the world laughs with you

cry and I'll give you something to cry about, you little !*&*^%$%&*#%#!"

Granny was so dear and precious but a little ill tempered.

Howdy...

Well even in the most tenderest moment with Ennis just holding Jack, you could say their eyes were closed... so this topic is intriguing.
Here are some lines from Annie Proulx' short story that may be relevant:

What Jack remembered and craved in a way he could neither help nor
understand was the time that distant summer on Brokeback when Ennis had
come up behind him and pulled him close, the silent embrace satisfying
    some shared and sexless hunger.

They had stood that way for a long time in front of the fire, its burning
tossing ruddy chunks of light, the shadow of their bodies a single column
against the rock.  The minutes ticked by from the round watch in Ennis's
pocket, from the sticks in the fire settling into coals.  Stars bit through the
wavy heat layers above the fire.  Ennis's breath came slow and quiet, he
hummed, rocked a little in the sparklight, and Jack leaned against the steady
heartbeat, the vibrations of the humming like faint electricity and, standing,
he fell into sleep that was not sleep but something else drowsy and tranced

Whenever I think Jack would have his eyes closed... I would think that he would want to be transported right back there... to that sleep that is not sleep.  To me, both Jack and Ennis are experiencing this sleep that is not sleep, so Ennis probably wants the same elusive experience.

What strikes me as satisfying is that I can only feel that this describes the peace of true love and that it was "sexless".  To me this scene was a most sacred scene, one where Jack and Ennis, two lowly uneducated roughnecks were sharing the gift of love... true love.  How can we ever blame them for not wanting to be deprived of such a universally beautiful experience.... and if all they have to do is close their eyes and think of each other right there... then good for them!!

Peace,
Frank
